Really impressive but tbf, Lebron was never primarily a scorer and his 30s were in a slightly lower scoring era while Jordan spent his first 2 30+ years playing baseball, won 3 in a row and retired at age 34, and the games would end like 85-95 more often than not

HydroStanley

LeBron has averaged 19.4 FGA his career, 15th all time. More than Bird, Erving, Durant, Kareem, Melo, Malone, and Russell Westbrook.

LeBron is primarily a scorer.

Averaged over 25ppg for like 70% of his career, you can’t believe his lies when LeBron says he’s not a scorer. A damn good one too

kharathos

How can you use an average for such a long career? True, lebron was mainly a scorer up to and including his Miami days, but he definitely was a floor general after returning to Cleveland (he was still an amazing scorer but wasn’t his main concern)

CapableDirection5557

4 | 5 hours ago

Magic, CP3 and Stockton are true floor generals. They get 10-15 real assists and might not even hit 20 points. LeBron is like Harden. Score first otherwise dish out to the perimeter basically. Always hitting 25-30 points but around 7 assists.

Well of course he’s one of the best scorers ever, but his biggest contribution to the warriors was always his playmaking imo. The opportunity be creates for his team on and off the ball are a bigger contribution than his scoring in my opinion.

-1 | 42 minutes ago

Not sure if you’re trying to lure someone into a trap, but:

i) Over the past decade, Curry has averaged 19.2 FGA per game. Over the same period, Lebron averaged 18.8 FGA per game, and a slightly higher 19.4 FGA per game across his career to date.

ii) When you factor Curry’s 3-point shooting volume and precision, his scoring output per game is even higher than what his FGA numbers would suggest.

iii) Curry has one of the lowest assists per game of any “top” point guards:

Magic Johnson 11.19

John Stockton 10.51

Oscar Robertson 9.51

Isiah Thomas 9.26

Chris Paul 9.16

Jason Kidd 8.69

Steve Nash 8.49

Russell Westbrook 7.96

…

Steph Curry 6.29

Allen Iverson 6.15

Like AI, Steph Curry is a score-first point guard who would be slotted as a shooting guard if he was taller and stronger.

Darth-fool1729

1 | 37 minutes ago

Wow you coincidentally included the years that steph was in the middle of his prime while lebron was phasing out of his. Talk about their fga at same points in their respective careers.

I never said he wasn’t one of the best scorers ever, but I was disputing the assertion that lebron only has less 40+ point games than steph because he’s not primarily a scorer while steph apparently is.

If you think playmaking is just apg then I don’t know what basketball you’ve been watching since steph started playing.

A friend and I had this conversation recently where we were throwing out various basketball ‘best evers’ and he said “Steph Curry” and I immediately disagreed and then looked at his accomplishments and said “you know, maybe he is. Wow”.

I think it depends on what you expect of a PG. I think you can definitely say Steph is the better overall player but traditionally a great PG was facilitating and piling up a ton of assists whereas Steph is more of a typical SG in a lot of ways as the game has evolved.

He’s an all-time great no matter what.

troniked547

25 | 8 hours ago

I hate when people try to over complicate this debate with semantics to elevate players that fit their vision of what a classic point guard is. Plain and simple, there are players that played the position of point guard their whole career, and those players are being compared. Just because one player was more of a shooter, and one might have been more of a passer, if they played the same position, then you just ask which player was the overall better player, and that should be the entire debate.

If you want to ask who was a better passer or playmaker, or who was a better leader, etc, then those are entirely different debates. I was a Magic fan growing up, and he was the player that first got me really into basketball in the first place, but at this point I think Steph is just better, but its obviously not a landslide.

GucciGaropp

13 | 9 hours ago

Do you ding Dirk for not being a traditional PF? A shooter not much of a paint presence. Never averaged 10+ rebounds. That would be ridiculous. He’s clearly a PF.

If Curry isn’t a PG, who was the PG of this Warriors era? Nobody? Definitely not Draymond.

CynicalCilantro

6 | 5 hours ago

How is it inarguably curry lmao? Magic had more championships, more MVPs, more fmvps on far fewer seasons than Steph. And his career was cut short due to aids lol

Lmao1903

-3 | 10 hours ago

I don’t think we can say inarguably when Magic exists, its hard to compare across eras naturally, but he dominated his era with Bird, dude comes in age 20, Finals MVP year 1, another one year 3, then from year 4 to year 12, he was top 3 in MVP and first team every single year, 3 MVPs, 2nd twice, 3 more rings.

Then he gets HIV and basically retires at 31. Curry has the longevity in an era where players get to play longer but he was never the best player in the world, rarely even top 2 in the world.

Jkcanwien

18 | 7 hours ago

lmao at stockton

Earlier-Today

8 | 3 hours ago

Stockton probably is the greatest traditional point guard of all time. Crazy high amount of assist attempts but still maintained an insanely high assist to turnover ratio.

The whole league and all the fans knew Stockton was going to be feeding Malone heavily during the game and teams still couldn’t stop him from getting those passes in.

He wasn’t aggressive enough on the scoring side of things for me - which is especially irksome because he was a really good shooter - but as a traditional point guard you literally can’t do better than him.

Superplex123

7 | 11 hours ago

For me it’s Magic and Steph in the top PG tier, then everyone else. Even though they play the same position, because they are so wildly different, not to mention played in different eras, it’s really hard to compare. But if I must pick who is better, I go with Magic. Beginning in his 4th season, Magic was in the top 3 in MVP voting 9 years straight, until he retired due to HIV. For each season, counting only the games that he played, Magic’s lowest winning percentage for a season was .687 in 1983-84. This includes his 1995-96 season coming out of retirement where he went 22-10 (.688).

https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask?q=magic+johnson%27s+each+regular+season+winning+percentage+for+the+games+he+played+in.

Curry has his own accomplishments. So I have no problem with people putting him above Magic. It’s all subjective.

spirib

Magic is pretty inarguably a top 5 player of all time. I hope everyone here arguing that Steph is above Magic is saying that Curry’s only definitive betters are LeBron, Jordan, and Kareem. Otherwise they’re just talking nonsense lol.

GucciGaropp

19 | 9 hours ago

Because of his height I classify Magic as a forward. Makes no sense.

Who played PG for the Warriors the last 17 years, if Curry isn’t a PG?

nomitycs

4 | 7 hours ago

He’s an offensive engine, I think that should be the distinction we make. I also think he’s the best offensive engine ever but there are others in his tier - namely MJ, LeBron, Jokic, maybe Nash. Statistically though what he was doing to offenses in his prime is unmatched by any player ever

Earlier-Today

1 | 3 hours ago

And Magic is only a point guard because that’s what they wrote him in as.

Magic is 6’9 - he’s a forward who’s really good at passing and playmaking.

But, because they didn’t have positionless basketball when he was playing, he got called the point guard.

troniked547

1 | 8 hours ago

well his height, and the box score and lineup card of every game in his pro career?

CanILickThat

-1 | 7 hours ago

I think Magic is getting underrated a bit. He accomplished more in less time and was forced to retire during his prime

Also LeBron has somewhat made Magic redundant, but Magic was basically LeBron with different sliders on his stats (better passer/playmaker, worse scorer and defender), but he could elevate a team like LeBron could thanks to his playmaking

I don’t think people would take Steph over LeBron if you slightly nerfed Lebron’s scoring and defense, and slightly boosted his passing

AccomplishedBake8351

1 | an hour ago

Not even that much less time, curry is just older. Magic had 12 seasons prior to the diagnosis. Curry has had 15 seasons playing more than 30 games. He has an additional season playing 43 games.

In addition magic hit the ground running with an all star appearance his first year, whereas curry took a few seasons to develop.

Curry will prolly win out on the longevity argument but as of right now the # of seasons thing is a lot closer than people think imo

Marano94

41 | 12 hours ago

The Warriors tried really hard to lose this game but Steph said: “we are not losing this game”.

He had an mvp calibre game, especially in the 4th quarter he had like 5 posessions where he scored to keep them in the game where the warriors couldnt get anything going offensively and of course also in overtime.

Really he has played at an MVP level, I think on par or above Shai and Wemby but behind Luka because Luka right now is playing beyond an MVP level.

But there is absolutely no player in the entire NBA Steph doesnt have a very high chance of outplaying in a game and still being the best/most impactful player on the floor including the player playing beyond an MVP level in Luka, as we have already seen this season.

All in all, as long as you have Stephen Curry on your team, you have a chance of beating one, this was one of the most clutch performances of all season so far, I dont think he missed anything in the clutch in the 4th or in OT be it from 3 or going to the basket.

Steph is doing all of that at age 38 (soon to be 39 in March), consistently scoring over 30 and over 40, efficiently, with fewer minutes than ever and playing better than last season, I do think what he is doing is historic at his age, like, even if you still expected him to play well because he is a generational player, did you actually expect him to play at an MVP level and at worst a top 3-4 player in the league with a very high chance of outplaying the other top 3 guys in a game/playoff series while being this clutch? I think there is a discussion to be had where Steph ranks in impact on the floor among players his age historically.

On a side note: Yaxel, despite the turnovers and lacking on defense, still had some good moments on offense, you can tell he still has a lot of room to improve.

triassic_broth

3 | 5 hours ago

Yeah, but this isn’t nearly as close as you think. You’re looking at scoring alone and completely ignoring what separates LeBron from Curry and everyone else in NBA history.

40+ point games, age 35 and older:

Curry: 16

LeBron: 15

Jordan: 12

Durant: 9

Harden: 6

Pretty close, right? Now look at this.

30+ point, 10+ assist games, age 35 and older:

LeBron: 24

Harden: 8

Nash: 5

Havlicek: 3

DeRozan: 3

Durant: 2

For comparison: Jordan: 0

LeBron has more 30 point, 10 assist games than the next five players combined.

And here’s what people don’t seem to appreciate: 30 points and 10 assists means a player directly contributed to at least 50 points of offense, but obviously much more.

That’s the difference. The point guard Curry can match LeBron as a scorer, but LeBron can dominate the scoring column while simultaneously creating an entire game’s worth of offense for his teammates, and that’s where LeBron separates himself from everyone else.

prettyboynopimple

6 | 40 minutes ago

So you changed the parameters to completely topic entirely

Glittering_Year2045

6 | 2 hours ago

At the same time, the assist stat doesn’t capture Curry’s true contributions. He’s a threat as soon as he crosses half court. When he gets doubled 30 feet from the basket and passes to Draymond, who now has a 4 on 3 to work with, Draymond may wind up with an assist on that play, but it was Curry who really created that scoring opportunity.

Wrong. That’s basketball reference’s arbitrary rule. The official NBA website will list a player’s age as whatever age they were at the end of the season.
