He is a very good coach. The players love him and he runs a system that requires everyone to be all in on defense.
I’ve never seen a coach make such effective in-game adjustments in a regular season game as him. It seems like any time they come slow out of the gate he still gets the team in line within a single timeout
Yeah, he probably doesn’t. Mara and Stirtz were mid 1st round draft picks, but Peavy too? All 3 already look like solid regular season rotation guys.
Spo is the consensus best coach for many years in those “gm surveys” but guys like daigneault, mazzula or udoka prove that they could build a winning team.

I think Spoelstra usually got it because the Heat used to over achieve with undrafted gems (who usually get worse after they go to another team). It seems like people might turn on him this year now that they have Giannis and seem to be in the same spot even though the roster isn’t great.

I put some examples of coaches with less experience that dont have the reputation yet, but we have more coaches that do a good job. Personally i dislike finch outside the court and his antics, but he produce results. I wanted to see the healthy wolves more with that lamelo/Edwards duo. It could be their year and finch will need to make the difference during the PO for It.

Go find some coaching breakdown videos of the 2024 playoffs and specifically the Celtics defensive schemes. He had custom tailored schemes for each opponent, and the players were drilled to execute them to perfection. Jayson Tatum at center against the Mavs completely neutralized the lob threat that had ESPN proclaiming Rudy Gobert the greatest fraud DPOY in the history of the league. That was the only series he played defensive center.
Daigs is probably the biggest reason we’re still tied for first place rn. Tied with Shai at the very least.
I think the biggest reason is that they place a bigger stock on personality when they draft compared to other teams. That comes with Daigs too though, he seems to be very clear with expectations around fringe/role players and how they fit into what he wants to do.

The Thunder plays multiple rookies and multiple guys on two way contracts 15-20 min. It’s not like the Thunder have some monstars ball that gives them special powers, it’s just coaches who recognize where guys fit and use them effectively in rotations and a roster of guys led by an all time great player who make an effort to lift up the other guys every chance they get.

Mark does not get enough credit for the system and program he has both created and been able to implement. We brought people other teams have left to their g-league or cut and made them good bench players overnight. Atkinson said “Some teams are teams, and some teams are programs, and the Thunder are a program.” That is Mark and his coaching staff.

We just need a couple more bodies for our depth and to keep from tiring out. Chet, Sorber, & J-Will—if we can get them into the fold again, it would go a long way. The team is still doing great, but the added depth could make the team even scarier (especially if Sorber pans out).
