[Highlight] Luka Dončić (53 PTS, 17-33 FGM) boosted his PPG total to 40.1 during tonight’s win, becoming the first player since Wilt Chamberlain (1962-63) to average 40+ PPG through his first nine games in a season.

Dončić also became the fourth Laker to ever record four consecutive 40-point games, joining Kobe Bryant (6x), Elgin Baylor (3x), and George Mikan (1x).
Wait you can make comments
this is a real account? 19 yr old, that’s older than half the people on this reddit, lol
Most Points Thru 8 Games in NBA History:
1986-87: Jordan with 307
2026-27: Luka with 308
1962-63: Wilt with 4181961-62: Wilt with 4001959-60: Wilt with 317
(Good lord Wilt 😂)
EDIT: Through 9 games Luka has scored 361 points.
Wilt is like a mythological figure
Wilts first 3 season was ridiculous. He came out nuking the league.
40ppg….on 68% TS. That combination of volume and efficiency has gotta be unheard of.
Not sustainable…but damn impressive.
Prime Embiid had a 16 game stretch in the 2023-24 season from December 6 to January 22 in which he averaged 40.3 PPG on 67.9% TS. Maybe the most insane individual stretch I’ve ever personally seen, only this Luka stretch and Harden in his prime (21 game stretch in 2018-19 in which he averaged 43.1 (!!!) PPG on 63.1% TS) feel comparable scoring wise, although Harden’s 63.1% TS somehow feels light compared to the other two lmao
40/8/8 and just about a 1-2 percentage points from 50/40/90!!!! Papa Don for MVP
Absolutely bonkers with his shot difficulty. Love watching this dude literally create history on my favorite team.
Isn’t his shot quality the lowest among qualified players
He is last in the league in shot quality and in the 99th percentile in making them
Wouldn’t be surprising when you factor some of the ridiculous stuff he’s sinking
I wouldn’t know I’m just watching the games.
As a Lakers fan, Luka will never be a 50-40-90 guy because he has way too much fun out there.
Some of these threes he shoots are genuinely mind blowingly bad, but he’s so damn good that they go in enough to not complain lol
That and I don’t think 90% on FT is sustainable for him and his workload
And he doesn’t care about percentages, he throws up every last minute shot or heat check without thought. Just a killer mentality.
He has clearly made a jump with his FT shooting that I did not expect(career high 70s shooter) i thought it may be a crutch similar to LBj. But it’s clear he’s worked on it and improved. Whether it’s sustainable or not, he’s less than 2 percentage points away from 50/40/90 through 10 games dropping 40/8/8(1.7 steals ) and 68%TS.
All time great stretch of basketball.
He might be better than peak Steph right now
How does Curry’s stats compare?
Curry’s first 9 games during that 24-0 run:
32ppg, 6 assists, 45% 3PT on 5 makes per game, 70% TS
Luka through 9 games:
40ppg, 8 assists, 42% 3PT on 6 makes per game, 68% TS
So Luka has almost as good outside shooting, but more volume, better passing, and better at getting free throws.
curry on a minutes restriction. hes production is insane at 38
its sadly needed with the roster right now
I just lost all respect for the guy
Get lost lol, silly puns haha
Thank you Nico
If you are in a statistic that’s the only one since Wilt you are doing something right
Luka’s 06 Kobe Season!
Luka is insane, sad he will have MVP voters fatigue no matter how well he does.
Not if he keeps this up. Haven’t seen periods quite like these since Kobe/harden/embiid/steph, and this is likely even better than their streaks.
Kobe actually had three different occasions where he averaged over 40ppg for an entire month during the deadball era. In fact, his record was 43.4ppg in January 2006. And that was a season where teams averaged just 97ppg compared to teams averaging 113.4ppg this year. That would be equivalent to averaging 50.7ppg this year, a full 10ppg or 25% more than Luka. Kobe is still unrivaled.
A league with 97ppg and a league with 113ppg are almost 2 different sports so it’s not nearly guaranteed that Kobe would have scored 50ppg in a January 2026ish (especially since he was a midrange ultimate scorer)
We’re not comparing the sports or how they would have done if both changed though. We’re comparing the relative scoring loads. Scoring 44.7% of the league average is a massive increase over 35.3%. How each of them scored is irrelevant.
Number 1 in league standings ?
Jokic and westbrook won as a 6th seed he should have won when he was 5th in the west and made it past OKC, and the twolves. Carried the mavs to the finals with kyrie.
yup 2024 was luka’s. but i hope he makes it this year because caleb wilson is gonna win 15 in a row after this year.
He’s never received any voters fatigue, he has just never been this good. If he keeps this up he’ll win barring Wemby doing insane Wemby things.
I don’t think that’s entirely fair. Luka has been putting up MVP-caliber numbers for years, and voter fatigue absolutely plays a role when people start looking for reasons to give it to someone else. The difference this year is that he’s taken another step forward and is making his case impossible to ignore. If he maintains this level, he deserves to win. Wemby is probably the only one who could realistically change that conversation with an absurd season.
Voters fatigue is for people who have won the award
That’s not really true. Voter fatigue can apply to players who haven’t won yet, especially when they’re consistently in the conversation but voters keep looking for a reason to give someone else the award. It’s not exclusive to previous MVP winners. It’s why Tatum and Luka will find it hard to win MVPs.
I was a Mavs fan until they traded Luka (fuck you Nico). Then I became a Nets fan (idk why). Seeing Luka show everyone that he’s the best player in the league (and my GOAT) and Cooper Flagg being good puts me in such a bad mood and reignites my forever hatred for Nico Harrison (fuck you Nico)
Being a Nets fan for no reason especially after the KD era is so funny
The Paul Pierce/KG/Kirilenko era*
The foot work is so good.
Get this man some help
he is their offense he don’t need help
The Lakers become a college team when he’s off the court
it helps the case for MVP
You just describe the last six years of his career and he has none
Man is going nuclear to start the season
This guy is nuts.
amazing
Gotta find where Nico is working and fire him again
Does Doncic get this good if LeBron stays? LeBron could’ve been a contender without swapping to a 6ers superteam
Yeah he does. He averaged 38/8/7 in March last season so right now he’s picking up where he left off.
They were a contender but Luka got injured right before the playoffs.
Typical for LeBrons career.
Superstar on a max contract gets injured right before the playoffs. Leaving LeBron to do his best with a bunch of low-grade role players (due to the max contract taking up all the cap space)
They weren’t a contender with OKC and the Nuggets ahead of them
The core of LeBron and Luka was great but they had holes in their roster - mainly for big men
I think he won’t, though they figured out late last season to play together, and know without bron, it feels like he has more freedom to do whatever he fking wants.
MVP
First 9!
Dude the court is tough to look at. Whats with this piss color court?
How they let this slowmo guy just walk in and basket it?
He was the mvp last season barring the injuries and he is now on pace to be the mvp and is not close
Idk how you can argue wemby over Luka now, Luka is also defending absurdly well
Austin Reeves has been pretty mid this season so Luka is having to do everything. If I’m JJ I’d strongly consider load managing Luka the next few weeks. We want to see Luka healthy in the playoffs.
Austin Reaves is average 23 points and nearly pulling off a 50/40/90. If that’s mid then i’ll take that all day.
edit: added nearly
dont let luka’s biblical greatness reduce AR. The man is balling in his own right
