Jake Tapper: “The Sixers have beaten the Knicks twice this season.” Mayor Mamdani: “Well, the pied-à-terre tax is coming anyway.”
For context, NYC’s pied-à-terre tax targets luxury second homes worth over $5 million owned by people whose primary residence is outside the city. Witty jab against a certain someone who plays in Philly but lives in NYC.
I appreciate that explanation

Damn, didn’t know mascots made that much.
It’s Phillie Phanatic you uncultured swine
Still collecting paychecks from that one Always Sunny episode.
Get Pablo on this
He can’t prove anything when there’s no paper trail. A former minority owner with no provable agreement to current owners can’t be punished by the NBA. Ballmer should have had his wife give gold bars to Kawhi’s mom in Birkin bags.
Worth it
*Third party with no provable current direct association to ownership.
That’s hilarious
That’s not Mamdani or the city though that’s Letitia James and Hochul
Mamdani had been really great at pushing Leitaa james winning and working with hochul
to her credit she has completely left the establishment to work with hamadan on good policy
I mean it should be regulated just like other gambling industries in the state. Don’t need to be lobbied to see that
Thank you for the explanation. Mamdani is a treasure
I assumed he was coming at Anderson and Tapper, bc they sure as fuck can afford +$5M penthouses or brick stones in NYC
I think it is definitely a jab at LeBron but I was interested so did a brief Google.
Anderson Cooper has property in New York City, yes, but it is his primary residence, not under the umbrella of a luxury second home. Even when he inherited a second apartment when his mom died, he didn’t keep it for long and ended up selling it rather than keep it empty.
Jake Tapper on the other hand works out of CNN’s Washington DC office so if he does have a place in NYC then he would be eligible for the tax. But it doesn’t look like he has any NYC homes at this time. And the tax should prevent that from happening in the future too (which is a good thing)
If it’s your primary residence it’s not subject to the tax.
Brownstones?
I say this all the time. You can disagree with his policies, but Mamdani is a good man. He cares about NY. I am happy with him as mayor as opposed to these other ghouls that have run my city.
Agreed. I think some of his economic policies are misguided (namely, rent control) but there’s no denying he’s a genuine guy
He’s a good man because he made a witty remark?
How does being witty equate to moral goodness? What?
He’s a good man because he actually cares about the people of New York instead of using the power to line his own pockets or exert pressure in the form of sexual harassment over women a la Cuomo.
Hes a good man AND hes witty. Deadly combination in politics.
Extra context: Jake Tapper is from Philadelphia.
Thank you, I was wondering how we got dragged into this.
But the pied a terre tax wouldn’t apply since he lives in New York, as you explain
Im guessing LeBrons primary residence is in LA? I don’t actually know tbf
I would imagine that he’d be able to get it changed as the majority of the year he’s playing games.
Then he’s probably paying a pretty hefty income tax if he decides to be an NYC resident for more than half the year
States want their money. Athletes pay state income tax to the state where they generated their income. For NBA players, that means 41 away games get state income tax on their NBA salary at the that team’s state, and 41 games get state income tax on the home team. Of course, you skip the teams without the state income tax.
That’s the source income rule and it supercedes any other domicile rules.
Other sources of income like endorsments are generally applied entirely to their state of domicile. Likewise for the rest of their income like investment income, interest income, etc.. Lebron’s tax lawyers probably don’t care because that income will be taxed in CA or NY and they are comparable. It’s probably easiest and safest to log the flight dates and apply the income proportionately.
Damn, never realized an NBA player has to go through all this tax thing.
Sheesh
We aren’t talking income taxes here though, right?
And I thought only a few states claim income taxes from out of state “part time” workers that work in their state? I had to pay that in California, but not when I was traveling to a few other states for work
How do they even know what is a primary or secondary residence? Is that something you have to declare on tax forms? What stops someone from saying their NYC place is their primary even if it isn’t
Yes you declare a primary residency on taxes. That’s how you determine what state you are paying taxes to in the first place. The government has access to a lot of tools to verify this, and most people don’t want to risk being found guilty of tax fraud.
They were claiming primary residence in other places with lower taxes, to avoid the higher taxes in NY. Now, they are taxed either way.
Because rich people do everything they can to not claim NYC as a primary residence for income tax reasons
They can audit your travel itinerary. You probably do not want to knowingly lie to the tax collector when they ask you for which days you spent in NYC.
When you declare it for taxes you can only pick 1. The very rich definitely have multiple places and pick which is primary based on taxes sometimes. But the inconvenience may not be worth it and there are some situations that would make it clear fraud. Cant just buy a shack, never sleep there, and declare it primary while living in a mansion in a different state where you work, sleep, and get mail delivered.
Who cares? He can afford the tax. He should pay it haha
It’s NY now
It’s based on where you are for most of the year so his primary is New York.
Look up “jock tax.” Athletes are taxed differently.
Guess it depends on when he “officially left” LA though, no? He didn’t even announce the 76ers until the end of July which is nearly 7 months
your primary residence is where you live
What if you live everywhere? The Pope is all over the place, but mainly lives in the Vatican, yet votes in Illinois’s local elections.
LeBron lives in LA
That’s what he’s saying. The tax is coming in even though it isn’t being used as revenge against LeBron for beating the Knicks.
That doesn’t really make sense. Why would it be in question and need assurance if it’s irrelevant to LeBron? I think Mamdani had a relatable moment of simply coming up with a one liner that doesn’t actually make sense when you think about it. When you don’t think too hard about it but still get the context, then yes it is funny
Alternatively, he could be saying “we’re still taxing Philly residents who own property in NYC” but I don’t know if that demographic is significant enough to be able to be coherently implicated
No, what he said makes perfect sense, people just don’t understand that he can live in NYC most of year and still not be considered a permanent primary resident. So under the new bill, he would still be taxed unless he officially declares NYC as his legal permanent primary home, which he won’t do cus he’d pay millions more in local taxes.
Yeah it doesn’t make sense. It would’ve made sense if the Knicks were 2-0 vs Philly. “LeBron gave you two wins.” “The tax is coming anyway.”
I’d love to know the number of people living in Philly with houses in New York and why.
It’s a joke
He would have to be in nyc 6 months + 1 day to claim residency and avoid the tax. I doubt he owns a place in nyc though
If he paid nyc income tax I doubt they would worry about it
He must if he was flying from New York every day. Maybe he lives in a suburb of NY but especially around there, there are places he could take off from that aren’t in the city
Though he could rent
He called up Beyonce and asked to stay in the guest apartment.
That’s not the only way to be a resident of somewhere otherwise people who travel a lot wouldn’t have a residence; there might not be a place that LeBron ever spends 6 months + 1 day at. LeBron left LA with the intent to make NY his home and it’s where he returns when he is away—he is a resident of NY.
NYC real estate is one of the best-appreciating assets on earth.
I would be shocked if he were doing something financially inane like renting.
You don’t actually have to be there 6 months to claim residency you just cant be 6 months in another state
You don’t have to own the place you are living to be a resident of NYC. Renting an apartment etc still counts. Note: I have zero idea what living arrangements LeBron has going on.
I mean in relation to having to pay a pied-a-terre tax..
The tax is based on non-primary residences owned. Renting means he’d owe nothing.
It depends how many days he stays there that year
It’s a joke.
Does he have to pay pied a terre if he rents? I guess he could but a place just to but a place. But if he knew the tax was coming would just just rent to avoid? Maybe he stays at Jay-Z’s place lol.

Mamdani on a fucking heater
This is insults me
Love Mamdani! Haha. Sorry King, the Mayor is coming after you. Hehe.
I think it’s anything above 1 million, not that that would change anyone’s sentiment towards the issue.
It’s \(5m for homes (edit 1-3 family houses). For co-ops and condos, it’s \)1m until July, 2028, when it moves to $5m.
Just to add to this, the \(1m and \)5m are both DOF market value not actual market value. Because of the way NYC calculates its taxes, they both translate to about $5m in actual property value, whether a condo or 1-3 family home.
I mean I don’t know manhattan super well but aren’t most homes condos and co-ops?
Around half of those old brownstones and rowhouses are still single-family occupied, or at least cofigured as such.
In Manhattan it’s ~all condo ownership, but there’s “normal” homes in basically all the other boroughs. Density goes way down once you’re off the island.
Sure. But it’s still wrong to claim it’s either \(1m or \)5m. It targets largely vacant secondary residences with two different thresholds until 2028. I just dislike when people say, “It’s fine because it only affects houses over \(5m,” or, “My mom’s friend that’s a grade school teacher making \)120K a year is going to go bankrupt by this because she lives in Manhattan and everything is over $1m.”
Form whatever opinion you want on it, but base it on the totality of the facts.
Uh that would definitely change sentiment
I thought that was a made up word, thanks for explaining
my dumb ass thought he was talking about Algerians
If it makes you feel better, all words are made up.

What are the chances that Anderson actually put those dots together
LeBron lives in NYC?
He hops in his fat helicopter and flies to New York when he leaves Philly
Oh that’s fantastic hahahaha
He had that response loaded up
This seemingly wouldn’t even apply to Lebron so I’m not sure how it is much of a jab.
Maybe it’s just a jab at CNN and the Ellisons who hate mamdani so much because of policies like piede a tierre.
That was actually the first thing that came to my mind, especially because Tapper/CNN/MSM has been stoking the islamaphobia and accusations of anti-semitism aimed directly at Zohran, so Im sure he hates them and didnt appreciate Tapper acting buddy-buddy.
LeLawfare
You the real mvp
It actually targets residents with two homes in the city as well. Not just non residents.
I was not smart enough to understand any of this thanks.
He should ban helicopters.
This should happen everywhere in the USA.
Very witty quick response
Elite ball knowledge
But is his NYC residence not his primary home?
Uh, meaning what? It’s Bron’s primary residence. Dumb.
It’s his primary residence…. Won’t apply to Bron Bron
Not in LA where his family lives?
Don’t think he lives with his family anymore if he’s playing in Philly and the eastern conference vast majority of th year
I mean, he’s working in Philly. He’s on the road for half the year. He’s spending his summers in LA.
He isn’t spending that much time in NY, either. And he’s only recently “moved” to NY.
That said, you may be right. Assuming the rules are flexible enough, he can probably declare NY his primary residence.
NYC won’t be the majority of this tax year but might be next year.
but if Bron is living in NYC wouldn’t that make it his primary residence?
Living full time in nyc and commuting to work outside the city isn’t a pied de terre.
LeBron isn’t living full time in NYC. Just during the season.
Fair description. V stupid myopic policy. Great way to cool down investment in the City. San Francisco / CA and Washington State have also tried (rejected vs passed) to do the same thing. Way to go. Now new promising startups will stay away from these cities and states. I am an engineer having lived in NYC, Bay Area and Seattle area. This is a great way to cool down the business environment. Oh and forget it about “All billionaires are evil.” That’s as true or untrue about anyone as it is about them as a general rule.
But Lebron lives in NYC? Not sure how this is a shot at him.
So you pay property tax, on property that you own outside of NYC, IF you also own property in NYC?
No, on property in NYC that you aren’t actively living in.
Ok that makes more sense. Meant to disincentivize empty property in the city.
Well sorta. Its only on homes worth more than 5million. It’s just a tax on rich people who dont live in the city basically saying if you want to flex nyc you gotta pay a little more.
No, If you own a property in NYC over a certain value and it is not your primary residence you pay an extra tax on it.
you pay property tax if you own a luxury second home that is not your primary residence
LeVies
How are you that wrong about it lol
this was so blatantly planned lol

Also further south than Portland, Maine by 0.01 degrees latitude
Yea but Americans can’t really comprehend that and just assume we’re all up more north anyways. So we roll with it

Zohran looks like what I’d draw as a classic good and loveable mayor in a generic cartoon lmao
He’s just missing his tall hat
And the sashe that says “Mayor” that he never takes off for some reason, especially in the shower
how else would everyone know that he’s the mayor?!
A badge hastily scribbled in crayon that reads “Da Mayer”.
That’s what the suit is for
Him jumping in the pool on the first day of summer with the suit still on was a top tier bit lol
Rides a Richard Scarry bike
The stache
I feel like that’s exactly what he’s going for with the stache and he’s rocking it lol
It really is a caricature he’s developing. I think the moustache will age well and become more iconic over time
He’s doing it for Movember, to raise awareness for men’s health and prostate cancer
He’s such a platonic ideal of a mayor it’s crazy
not even the best DSA south asian mayor of a top 2 populated city in the USA
God imagine as it goes grey. A powerful stache.
Stop, I can only get so erect
I happened to trim my beard into a stache and didn’t realize it was on Nov 1, guess I’m rocking it for the rest of the month
It’s for Movember to raise awareness for men’s health issues. It works for him, though!
He needs a monocle
I know a “my wife asked for it” moustache when I see one
I don’t know about his wife, but I’ve heard his staff hate it.
Top hat Mamdani is gonna get 90% of the vote for his second term
And a mayor sash.
YES lmao
That damned smile
His face muscles must be crazy strong by now
You know how when you made faces as a kid your mom said to stop or else you might get stuck that way?
He does a thousand reps a day
That smile has made so many people up and down this country smitten with him. It’s crazy
It’s Gus from Stardew Valley, pause it at the start when he’s smiling then compare it to a picture of Gus and you’ll see the resemblance.
Now I know technically Gus isn’t the mayor, but he organizes and caters for events, shelters people during green rain, takes care of Linus and tries to look out for Pam, tell me he isn’t really the mayor.
GET THAT MAN A TALL HAT RIGHT NOW, NYC.
Tall hat that’s twice as tall as him because he’s like 2foot 3
he’s 5’11” why are you mad, do you have a second home in nyc?
Yea but I just helicopter to work so it’s fine
Edit: oh I should change my flair huh 🥰😄😇🎉🤣
He’s doing a Movember mustache too!
He’s a young Mayor Lewis
Now I’m thinking of the mayor from the power puff girls
He looks a little like Super Mario and tbh I’m loving it
You don’t mess with the Zohan
He looks like he’s gonna be the mayor of Gotham city and is.
You can do something about that, you know. Take matters into your own hands.
The mustache makes him look like a middle eastern version of Rollie Williams from climatetown
Looks like Daniel Plainview’s brother who’s on the opposite spectrum
It’s that old timey porn star stache
He’s a few gray hairs and a couple of weightlifting sessions away from becoming Omni-Man
No it’s a short hat with an M on it. For Mayor.
Young Mayor of Townsville vibes.

Yo mama, life, and worldview are all more cringe

It’s really unfair how handsome both he and Abdul El-Sayed are

Mamdani, Sayed, Ossoff. The Democrats have officially entered their DILF Era.
That fucking twitter thread about his pants is some of the funniest shit I’ve ever seen
And that man El-Sayed is buff af, atleast in comparison to every other politician. Man looks like he can beat you with words, and if that doesn’t work, he can beat you with his hands Teddy R. style lol
I saw a video of him benching 225
Yeah on Vic Mensa’s show. Well worth a watch.

I’m shocked trump didn’t bring up his well built ass at a rally.
The ol’ indian stache

It goes great with that infectious smile of his.
It’s for movember, raising awareness for prostate cancer
Ah, so the pied a terre tax is just a stealth LeBron Disruption Strategy. True 4D chess.
Not even the glorious powers of Mamdani can defeat the Klutch Vans, he better watch out

OH WHAT A SHOT BY ZOHRAN
From Mam-downtown.
Tapper is a Sixers fan? 🤮
He grew up in south philly, he likes all the teams lol
And was born in NY too before growing up in Philly. So technically he could be rooting for both Sixers and Knicks.
It’s heartbreaking.
Lmao
we disavow
I condemn Tapper
Why?
He’s a vile, racist ghoul who worships death.
worst politics on the planet
Do a lot of people not like him? I feel like you could do a lot worse.
Jake tapper is just the liberal version of Jesse watters. They’re both terrible people simping for billionaires
A lot of people on the left hate him for being one of the voices pushing on Biden’s secret cognitive decline.
and loving genocide
the rabid zionism is the problem.
I have no idea what your media diet is but this is straight up nuts, my man. Where are you getting your news? Like top 3-4 sources. I’m dead serious I would love to know.
Tbf every team has their cockroaches, have you seen our owners?
But LeBron lives in New York and commutes to Philly, so the pied a terre tax wouldn’t apply to him?
It’s not his primary residence.
I doubt he bought a place in NYC though
Probably can’t afford to buy with his small NBA salary honestly, he’s one of the lowest paid players in the league
He can’t even afford a baconeggsndcheesesaltpepperketchup with that salary
I saw him working at Blaze Pizza the other day. Surely a recession indicator.
It’s why he’s had to play 24 years of basketball
Fanatics probably gave him a sick ass top floor apartment. With a sick view of Manhattan and a fully stocked wine collection.
(Before anyone say anything, I’m not accusing of cap circumvention, he actually does stuff for Fanatics and it’s well documented from both sides)
Which is so funny about the aspiration scandal. If Kawhi just does 1 god damn instagram post, it doesn’t unravel like it does
and he absolutely has a place in the philly region
Casanovawong, more Casanova poiting out this guy is wrong. Am I right?
Probably has Cali as his actual primary residence.
He still owns that big ass house in Akron too
The taxes on that place are nothing compared to his LA place
Pretty sure he isn’t worried about the taxes. Being in LA is worth it.
You don’t get to decide your primary residence. It’s where you spend the majority of the year. For LeBron that’s either NYC or LA depending how many days he’s actually in NYC throughout the season.
How does he not get to decide? There are people who are paid to tell rich people how many nights to stay somewhere because the tax implications can be insane.
Right, BUT if he doesnt factually stay somewhere the requisite number of nights then he cannot decide thats still his primary residence…
So he’s in nyc when he’s in philly but he’s gonna be on the road 41 games out of the year. It would be cool to see a chart of how many nights he stayed in what cities for the year.
It would just be a map of road games lol
Cool? You just came up with the most boring chart ever.
missing some crucial parts of the household, LeQueen and LeDaughter. They live in LA, so the primary residency is LA.
He moved in the middle of the year. He’s going to claim NYC in his taxes.
That’s not how it works.
I’m assuming his primary residence in LA
Not if he’s playing a full season in Philly while commuting multiple times a week from New York
Say he splits between the two plus travels all season then he’s in cali most of the summer it could be close
But even then, he’s probably living in LA between (at most) April or (at most) June after the finals and before pre-season starts in September
His primary residence is LA. His secondary home he uses to commute to Philly is in NYC.
If he owns yes. It’s a second home unless heChanges that his address is NYC which I doubt he would do a full relocation vs keeping his LA address as his main address.
You don’t get to pick your primary address. It’s based on which one you are at the most.
Sure but he travels most of the year.
So it would apply to all NY athletes living in the city? Never considered that
There is 0.0 chance he stays 183 nights in NYC
Yeah, but he didn’t move to NY until August/September so LA will almost certainly qualify as his primary residence for 2026.
Rich people get to choose which one they are at the the most.
Except if you’re the POTUS illegally voting in Florida, claiming you live there and not in the White House like the Orange pedophile does.
I mean that’s pretty typical. Bush voted in Texas and Obama voted in Chicago. I’m pretty sure congress members also vote back in their home states.
Saying “this is my primary residence” is nonsense, there are generally stipulations on how many days you stay in the home a year
Well sure but he also travels for work so it’s not just days you stay in the home also he pays state taxes in certain states after enough days logged in a certain state.
So it’s not just days alone and it’s a bit more than that. He can state it’s his primary residence but also would need to put evidence such as a genuine effort to be a resident which is what parts of the evaluation is. I just made a brief description of one of the parts there and it’s far fetched he’d even just change his primary residence so that’s why I said what I said.
« I fly to work in a helicopter to avoid living anywhere near in or around Philly is that enough of a NYer for you? “
But if his wife is there full time it will count as their primary residence.
His primary residence is still LA
No
He’s not gonna be there for more than 2-3 months, there’s no way he can claim that without committing tax fraud
I haven’t looked at this particular law but most refer to living in the home at least half of the year which idk how that works with basketball and travel
I think it would still apply. He is likely going to get hit by it if he owns property in NY. even if he lives there more than 183 days a year the tax can still be levied. It is whatever is listed as the persons main home, which for LeBron is likely in LA I would imagine. If enough places do this they can close major loopholes for dodging this kind of stuff
Wouldn’t that still be considered his home, as he’s registered there? At least that how it works in the EU
does lebron even want to be considered a nyc resident? I’m skeptical the 5% pied-a-terre tax outweights the 3% New York city income tax
anything that’s limiting/constricting to us peasants and regular folks doesn’t apply to lebron and the like
Doesn’t he live in La?
This year it will probably be LA. It could switch to nyc for next year unless he spends the whole off season in his LA home.
He’s probably renting. His landlord would be subject to it I’m guessing
Reddit go outside. It’s Movember, men will be rocking staches in support of cancer awareness mental and many other things. Check on a mate!
I’m jealous of any man who can grow a sick stache lol
Maybe its because i’m Australian, but i have never understood the level of hate men with mustaches receive. I understand a bit of a laugh at kids who really want to grow one but dont have the hair yet so they end up with those whispy catfish whiskers, but mustaches are always sexy as hell.
Men with mustaches get hate in Australia? Weird.
Nah not so much, but i see a lot of chat from other cultures around it not being attractive. But also i’m not a scientist idk
I just hate it when guys have mustaches without any beard. It just looks pervy and nasty.
It’s funny, because as an American, my experience has been that mustaches have suddenly become weirdly popular in the last 5-7 years.
Which is frustrating to me, because I thought we finally killed mustaches 15 years ago.
Mustaches are always the wrong choice. Always. There’s nothing remotely sexy about them.
Reddit, infamously anti Mamdani. Who are you talking to lol?
Do you mean I should check my friends prostate.
Be careful not to explode their garbage can.
Bing Bong!!
I love my Sixers but man, Mamdani is my dude. Makes our mayor look awful.
I mean… it’s not like that’s hard lol
Nope which is why it’s so fucking jarring. Running circles around Cherelle
Last time I flew out of/back to PHL I didn’t hear her welcoming me back. I wonder if people got sick of it 😂
hate sitting at my gate and listening to her on loop
You’re just like me fr
I get Tapper is from Philly, but respectfully go fuck yourself Tapper. Sell out. Mamdani is a real one and didn’t withhold info just for a stupid book deal.
His book was bullshit
Don’t read his hellfire series or whatever either. It’s awful
I still remember that 5 minute monologue he gave after the eagles won the super bowl in 2017 on the main news lol
On his Twitter he calls himself a “long suffering Philly sports fan” when he’s won two super bowls in the last decade. Fuck outta here with that shit
Idk if you know any Philly sports fans but that sounds about right. Motherfuckers tell me “dude I need the Sixers being good, I got nothing rn with how bad the Eagles are”. Yeah, he’ll fit in
Tapper is a disgrace to journalism.
He’s not a journalist. Seriously. What’s the last investigative piece he researched himself? When’s the last time he was on the news and only reported facts without an utterance of opinion?
You know it’s an Islamophobic country when Tapper can continue to be a major political newsperson
What lmao
Islamophobia is a bullshit neologism
I hope you mean the ideology and not the term
All of It. Islamophobia is a bullshit term invented by Muslims who want to shut down criticism of their religión or Iculture. It was then adopted by leftists just like many other things in that alliance. Also, it’s very similar to when the AIPAC, ADL, etc label everything as anti-semitic as a way to shut down conversations they don’t like.
Islamic civilization and cultures within it are distinct from European/Western civilization, and there will always be tension between the two whether secular liberals (I am one) want to accept that or not.
Also, the guy I responded to called the US an “Islamophobic country” when we elected a guy twice as president who comes from Muslim roots. Also, leftists woild never call Muslim countries “Christianphobic” even though it’s much more fitting. The West has been much more accepting of Muslims than the Muslim world has been of Christians
I always thought he was a shill and a hack, but now that I know he’s from Philly I think he’s actually very cool and smart. Knicks suck.
ooh can someone catch me up on this drama?
He wrote a couple novels (really bad, I read the first hellfire club so this is not just me shitting on him). But during Biden’s presidency he held back information until it was time to push his book which hurt the chances of Kamala in doing so and just goes against every ethical part of being a ‘journalist’ aka if you know something you investigate/report it. You don’t hold it so you can sell copies of your book.
I am a big fan of LeBron and the tax is absolutely valid. Infact, I can’t wait for a time where there are no billionaires and nba teams are owned by the city and gambling(any type) is banned everywhere. Also, the simping I am seeing in this thread for billionaires is embarrassingly too much.
I hope that I see this reality
Fuck the billionaires who use their money to furnish their own nests. Having that much wealth means there is a responsibility to do something for the benefit of society with it. Otherwise, society should remove it from them.
They take our money and use that to make more money
We’re unfortunately hurtling straight into the void of the complete opposite.
Join r/communism comrade
They banned me like 10 years ago after a mod dm’d me screaming about Trotskyism & demanding me to pledge fealty to Marxism Leninism. They gotta relax imo.
C’mon now socialism isn’t communism
The city owning the team isn’t either.
A lot of soccer teams in Germany are owned by the fans, at least a majority of it.
The Green Bay Packers are also not owned by a single billionaire, aren’t either communist or socialist and are typically competitive.
Fans and cities owning the teams makes a lot more sense than some billionaire who is using the team for profit and as a gem in their proverbial crown .
Hell, American “socialism” ain’t even socialism! We just want healthcare and maybe less bombing of elementary schools.
I’m gonna be honest with you man. Most people don’t see any difference between those. So, I hope socialist and communist keep working together rather than bickering abt the differences.
Ain’t even socialism. Just common sense
Socialism is supposed to be a means to the end that is communism, though
You don’t have to be a communist to realize that billionaires aren’t paying their share of taxes.
At least educate yourself before posting
You also don’t need to have a vicious reaction where a random person is responding to another random person. Chill out. Communism is not the boogie man you think it is.
Sure, but even capitalists should understand that the system only works with rules.
Like if you remove all regulations, then one company eats another and, eventually, you’re left with the 6 companies that own every market in the entire world. Competition zeros out, and you have authoritarian feudalism. Basically the end game boogie man of communism, but with a handful of the private company “winners” as the kingdoms.
All this to say, even if you’re a raging capitalist, you have to understand Elon Musk paying a functional 3% tax rate is bad for society.
I have, you should open your mind and give the communist manifesto a read
Green Bay, the famous communist stronghold.
or just stick to NFL and move to Green Bay
Extremely toxic community that bans you if you aren’t a stalinist, maoist or hoxhaist
Way ahead of you
If we have to pay for the stadium, we own the team. Should be that simple.
Same
I’m guessing in this utopia world of yours big pharma just magically stops donating billions to each side and just let Americans die in peace knowing they didn’t financially fuck their entire family before leaving this world…? lol I would love healthcare reform over everything else.
I don’t know why your replies sounds very passive aggressive but i will reply in good faith. In a world without billionaires, there are no conglomerates. Thereby no big anything.
The Packers are owned by the fans. It would not be impossible for every team to be that way. There are only about 336 thousand people in the Green Bay metro area. The next biggest metro area to have a team is about 10 times as many people.
A better world is possible but many people don’t believe in even trying.
And then pharma will just stop investing in treatments and cures. Because without profits there is no incentive to invest. That is what the entire parent and royalty system is designed to encourage. Investment R&D and novel cures. After the patent runs out and you have made plenty of money the invention becomes public property.
Those gambling revenues will be the reason state could own those teams … That’s not happening
So, teams don’t have any earnings? And the billionaire owners are putting in the money from their pockets? Teams were being owned fine before sports gambling came into the league.
Nba teams owned the city?
Have you seen city governments? Please come to California and you’ll lose faith in local governments. They’ll make Kings look like geniuses
Shit Green Bay does just fine. It would work for nba teams as well
California is a collection of rich property owning boomers who vote down literally anything that theatens to tax them in any way. Of course their municipalities are just as shit.
All the poor young people struggling to get by don’t count because they don’t vote.
Local government sucks because the pay sucks. If you’re good at your job public entities likely can’t compete for your services. You got the horse in front the cart my friend.
Local government sucks because there’s zero accountability or transparency required. But agree, it’s exacerbated by attracting those unqualified
There is accountability and transparency from government, and that accountability is to you, the taxpayer. It’s called voting. And there is evidence of spending, it’s the annual budget.
I’m in Los Angeles so I can talk about my experience. Our local election is a great example of why government sucks. First, one of the primary candidates was Spencer Pratt. Republicans thought he would be the answer to their prayers, but he is horrible with his own money and actually spent himself into bankruptcy buying crystals in 2012. He used campaign donations to move into a luxury hotel. And yet, somehow he’d be good with the city’s money? This is the converse of the candidate who is being backed by the best Comptroller the city has ever had, Kenneth Mejia, who is popular on both sides of the aisle because he consistently points out fraud and waste. Then, when Pratt lost, they backed Karen Bass, the very incumbent they hated and said was terrible at governance and contributed to the fraud they complained about. So this is a primary level issue.
And this isn’t unique to California. Go look at the fraud in Texas. Republicans ran that state for 30 years and ran it terribly. Infrastructure sucks and employees suffer at the expense of rich guys saving a few bucks by denying workers compensation insurance. So you get injured on the job, sucks to be you. They don’t even offer mandatory water breaks on really hot days. You think that place is an accountability utopia? Their private utility has a monopoly and does absolutely nothing to improve services. Their property taxes keep increasing but they get less and less out of it.
And then Florida. There is so much rampant fraud that insurance companies began to pull out of the state, and they deregulated insurance whereas California over regulated insurance.
The real problem is billionaires keep buying candidates and governments across the country, and pay to pass policies that benefit them at the expense of everyone else. Meanwhile, they blame poor people and immigrants to justify doing what they want to do and many people bought into it.
The problem is voters and candidates. The average voter is terribly uninformed, and the people who want power often make bad politicians, and the people who’d be great politicians often don’t seek power.
One person owning a sports team makes absolutely no fucking sense at all. Just coz you have billions you can buy an entire culture? Pick it up and move it? Sports teams should be community owned.
You think a $300 million supermax contract should be paid for by tax dollars?
What the fuck are you talking about
Why would taxpayers foot the bill? Are nba teams not profitable?
Umm it would be payed by the revenue of the team??? Do you think the owners are paying all the players out of their own pockets? No. They are taking revenue, using some of it to pay the players, reinvesting some and then pocketing the rest.
What the fuck are you talking about because it actually has the potential to be a revenue generator for cities.
NBA players collectively receive around 50% of the leagues basketball related income. This income doesn’t change based on who owns the teams. I will forgive your rudeness because you don’t understand how the leagues revenue works.
perhaps $300m supermax contracts are part of the problem
County stadium was dope and a great ballpark when it was around. It has, can and could absolutely be done successfully.
Sf spent 2 million to open a single bathroom. They’d spend a few trillion on their team
Green Bay seems to be doing fine
The government is a reflection of the people who vote them in. Look in the mirror.
Um no it isn’t the fuck?
I didn’t choose Kamala Harris to be my presidential nominee. I didn’t choose Biden either. Super PACS and DNC fuckery did.
And who let it happen? If people protested against citizens United, you think pacs would have any power? Hold your elected officials responsible and things will change. If you’re black pilled, I can’t help you.
Can’t do nothing and can’t never try
One of the most insane takes I’ve ever seen. Just fundamental misunderstanding about modern society
I basically defined the word government. Can’t really make it simpler for you to understand. Sorry.
Yeah the average voter is a moron. I don’t want them running anything
Russians looking volunteers. They might give you a gun if you’re lucky.
How many local governments have you lived a reasonable amount of time? My local government made my municipality coffers well over double the adjacent that has 10x the people with smart decisions. I have also lived in 8 in the last 20 years and they vary greatly.
You think about high income taxes, athletes are a giant pool of the people getting taxed. A lot of uber rich people aren’t drawing income like that.
Great. That’s why this is a tax on second homes worth over 5 million.
Sounds like it’s gonna get thrown out once courts take a look at it due to discrimination
Rich isn’t a protected class….. oh wait what am I saying lol
So what’s your plan to get there ? Going to slap billionaires taxes?? Do you know that why businesses flee to Texas and similar?
Do you even know whats a small business or how much they earn? You think small business owners are billionaires??!!!. GTFO. Elon musk’s plan was to moves to Texas and escape the taxes. Guess what happened in Texas?!!! Blue wave is coming to get ya.
don’t bother with the attitude, i have been first engineer in startups.
So, you have horns? You are some truthsayer? I’ll keep my attitude. you can take you startups and shove it up yours.
Give them a choice between 90% tax or the firing squat 🤷🏽♂️
it is junk/nonsense for you or others to think you’re better than someone else simply because they earn more $$. that’s garbage. btw i’m an engineer not a billionaire but they build businesses that pay my salary. i’m mostly grateful for that when it comes to product companies. Keep your attitude powder dry for some of the non-product pure money businesses that have a higher tendency to fleece people. you’re not demonstrating any understanding of the difference.
If it were for the city to own these teams, we would have no teams. Who are you kidding?
We have an actual real life example in green bay packers. You guys are coping and simping for the billionaire!!!
The Packers are not publicly owned. They are owned by a large number of individual investors with stocks in the organization.
You think a team owned by 538K shareholders are publicly owned? What is your definition, I am curious
Keep dreaming, loser.
I dreamed of a world where palestine will be viewed more favourably than Israel. Guess what happened? I dreamed of a world where lula didn’t lose the presidency. Guess what happened! I dreamed of a world where socialist will win office in USA. Guess what is happening???!!!! You gotta dream. Abdul Kalam and MLKJr told us to dream and have a dream. I guess all you dream about are easily achievable, sub standard shit huh!!
How is it valid?
There is a bout to be a huge legal battle to determine its validity, there is no way for you to just say “yeah it’s a good tax”
Morally, nobody should own so much amount of money and yet at the same time so many people are homeless, without basic necessities, work multiple jobs just to survive. How’s that for validity?
Are you one of those people who unironically think that trickle down economics work?
He knew that would land with the Vanderbilt heir
This is perfectly satisfactory banter.
Jack Tapper is a fucking idiot.
