He will seek a buyout when he gets traded per Marc stein and that would reduce a teams payroll for this season which would actually make him more appealing to trade.

I remember something similar with Keith Van Horn. I think someone traded for him even though he was essentially retired.

Teams don’t care about paying the player, they care about how it impacts the salary cap. The contract is still active, and still counts against the cap like normal.

Now there’s a possibility for the contract itself to get voided, and in that case it will be cleared from the books completely. But I doubt anyone is going to take that risk.

No, even if bought out, his current cap hit remains. It’s far less appealing than, say, trading with Charlotte who could take a big salary back into their trade exception without shipping out any outgoing salary.

Unless he files retirement papers, the buyout counts in full against the cap, the difference is the actual amount paid out versus owed. At least, that’s my interpretation of it. Honestly, GSW has very few options, unless it’s someone like the Lakers trading Vanderbilt, Hardy, Bronny for KP straight out, no picks, there aren’t many teams who have the math that works out for both teams. As for the contract situation, my bigger question is how does the league see the contract against the cap for the weeks where KP chooses not to render services? GSW isn’t asking him to play, not showing up to team activities and choosing not to dispute the claim of not rendering services, I wonder if the league could consider those weeks as cap relief? $218k a game, that relief could let the team sign a minimum value deal. I know the league has offered that kind of relief for long term injuries to rosters in the past, not the same but interesting to see if that option exists or can be negotiated.

Well he has to show up, go to team doctor appointments, go to specialists, do everything under the team’s protocol for managing his condition and follow the team’s plan to return to the court. If he’s not doing that he’s in breach of contract.

It may be that the team doesn’t buy his diagnosis of POTS and want to perform their own evaluation of him, which he’s obviously refusing.

He did show up to the mini camp before preseason he probably knew he was cooked back then and made his final decision to walk away from basketball.

Porzingis has been in limbo for months and seemingly won’t talk to the warriors at all to even give them an inkling of what’s going on. I think the far more likely explanation is that Porzingis felt good enough to play over the summer when he signed the contract (he had just played 15 of the Warriors final 20 games and looked good) and then he had another setback before the season started.

And now he and the team have agreed that he won’t get paid because he’s away looking for his own treatments and will likely retire but will wait to do so to give the Warriors an opportunity to find a trade for his contract. Probably makes him even more valuable because the team trading for him gets to either void his contract or have Porzingis retire so (if I understand the cap ramifications correctly) it basically turns into an in-season expiring contract

He could look and feel completely fine, but POTS is an unpredictable condition. It can flare up with physical exertion. He probably just doesn’t want to risk triggering his symptoms by playing basketball.

He has some bad influence friends so there’s a good chance he has already tried some stuff to chase the highs he has experienced.

It’s because even if you are injured/sick, you still have obligations to show up for things like check-ins with the team medical staff. He is refusing to do any of that normal stuff

In addition to not satisfying contract obligations, there is also likely an insurance angle. Teams purchase insurance for loss of players due to injury, and I’m sure those policies require that the injury be validated by team doctors.
