Yeah, they made a fun show that took concepts of most other NBC shows that showcased talented comedic actors, it just used a group of NYPD detectives as the vehicle. They also had covered a lot of topics dealing with police corruption in those first seven seasons, just not as on-the-nose about it. Then George Floyd happened and they went “Okay, yep. We are taking the exit ramp from this show’s entire concept and making sure that we plant a hard stamp on where we stand on police corruption and brutality even more than we already had.”
