Giannis, asked if he came to Miami expecting to contend right-away “I don’t know, I’m just a basketball player. I just came here to compete. I think we have the pieces but also a lot of things to figure out. I know what Heat culture is about: once we get on the right track, we can make some noise”
At 2-5, this is not the start that two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo expected or hoped for when he was traded to the Miami Heat this past offseason.
But did Antetokounmpo truly expect the Heat to be an instant title contender after the Heat needed to give up so much to acquire him from the Milwaukee Bucks? The Heat dealt four rotation players in Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakucionis, and a haul of draft capital to land Antetokounmpo.
“I don’t know,” Antetokounmpo said when asked that question following Monday night’s 138-117 blowout loss to the Lakers in Los Angeles to begin a five-game West Coast trip. “I’m just a basketball player. I just came here to compete. Do I think we have the pieces? Yeah. Do I think we got a lot of things to figure out? We have a lot. But I know what the Miami Heat culture is about. I know what the players in this locker room are about. I know what I’m about. And I know that once we get on the right track, we can make some noise.”
