[SNY] Landry Shamet says he hopes kids learning to play basketball learn to move without the ball: “It really helps you learn how to play and understand how to move and get open. It’s always been something I try to get better at”
This a big reason why people who grew up playing soccer make great basketball players
I remember LeBron and some older players saying similar stuff like they grew up playing a variety of sports or track/feild - meanwhile most rookies today go straight to ball
This is the imo the biggest misconception in sports as a whole. Overspecialization in sport early does not give the athlete a better chance to succeed in said sports. Not only that, it increases the burnout rate and increases injury risk, part of why I believe nba players are getting injured as often as they do
It’s such a difficult dilemma and comes down to genetics and geography. Early specialization is absolutely needed in some sports like soccer, but also, if you aren’t in an area with elite coaching and development, the athlete won’t reach their potential.
I don’t even think early specialization is that necessary in soccer. Soccer isn’t like basketball where an ultra athletic and tall person can pick up the sport at 16 and be successful, but that doesn’t mean a 10 year old should be training 4-5x a week in just one specific sport. It’s a hindrance to an athletes movement profile
You could reduce burnout if we (NA) were a soccer nation like most of Europe/South America and kids just played for the joy of the game, but some of the same problems would still exist
💯 That and a better understanding of space and body positioning
I have always been a massive fan of Siakam’s footwork.
You’re only as useful as where you’re standing and what you’re doing. In fact, the position battle is often what is really fun to watch when people complain about “nothing happening” in soccer.
one of my few sports memories is playing soccer with a smaller, unathletic kid as highschool freshmen, and he was immediately promoted to varsity because he knew how to move without the ball, and I couldn’t see what he was doing and realized I wasn’t gonna be good at soccer
As knicks fans we’re very lucky to have this guy. Just a hardworking professional. Zero drama, zero attitude.
A Knick champion forever, he battled injuries and always stayed ready
I loved how clutch he played but I really became a fan during the parade when he was up on the float telling little kids “This is going to be you one day!” such a stand-up dude.
I was bummed when we traded him
He’s also a really talented photographer
His game day attire is usually on point too. Or at least if you live in NYC, he’s got the village boy shit down pat lol
And signed for relatively cheap.
The landrymat is here to wash you
boo
Bridges has basically been benched in favor of Shamet twice this year and we’ve won both games, granted against lesser opponents but with the way we’ve been sleepwalking at the start we’ve needed him.
Needs to find his confidence again, he has plenty of time to figure it out. Glad our depth can handle things in the meantime.
Massive part of soccer, hockey, lacrosse, etc. back door cut would be an easy goal in lacrosse
Sham can teach a 3 & D masterclass
Good bit of wisdom. It didn’t seem like the Heat defense knew that the lakers were allowed to move without the ball last night
Donte DiVincenzo was always good at this as well. I used to love watching him on the Knicks
Landry looks like a carpenter that just got done framing a house.
John turturros outie
But I shoot 3s! I just want to stand at the corner and never move! Why don’t you ever pass the ball to meeeee!??
As much pain as Steph Curry has caused the blazers, his offball movement is an art. If I was an undersized guard in HS, I would study everything he does without a basketball in his hands (including his endurance workouts)
Rip Hamilton was another master at it. Whenever I watched that Detroit team play I’d just watch Rip run circles around the defence tiring them out.
he was good at it basically from day one. he was scrawny as hell but was so good offensively he cracked the rotation on a good team immediately.
It’s the catch 22 of elite sport. You usually need to have elite star skills just to make it to the highest level, but at the highest level they don’t need that many guys to showcase their elite star skills.
The guys who most quickly recognize that they won’t be superstars and change their game accordingly will thrive. Easier said than done though.
Luka himself said last season he needs to get better and be more comfortable off ball
Play multiple sports!!! Soccer is constant movement, football (at least while the play is happening) is constant cutting to get open.
For the players that hardly get playing time and those that do …. Getting open is an art…. Imagine playing tag and not getting tagged… players are so dumb
