Rojo438

If Jimmy comes back as Jimmy, this team is for real. The basketball IQ on this team is off the charts, and that’s where Yaxel fits in, he is waaayyy ahead in terms of that for an nba rookie, I don’t care how old you are. Once gets used to the speed of the nba and sees the opposition a few times, he seems like the type of who will figure out this game in a hurry…

I keep seeing this great anticipation of Moody’s return. I don’t see what everyone else sees in him. I never thought he was consistently good. All I see are significant lapses on both offense and defense.

I see him get his pocket picked and going cold from 3. He can struggle to stay in front of his guy on defense and sometimes fails to rotate off ball.

And I don’t expect him to be better coming off such a serious injury. He may even take some steps back. I’m not convinced he’ll crack the new warriors rotation.

Why does everyone else seem to think he’ll be a difference maker?

Edit: I’m sincerely asking. I want to know what I’m missing.

Shumonyu | GSW

41 | 13 hours ago

It’s actually insane how good he’s been and for so long. He had both a historically great peak and has been playing at a high level since 2013.

That combination of peak and longevity can only be matched by a very small number of players in league history.

OddConsideration7290

-8 | 13 hours ago

The problem is that that number of players also includes his entire competition to be GOAT. And unfortunately LeBron swamps him in that regard.

Here’s a leaderboard of All-NBA selections to get a sense of how great some of the greats were for quite a long time.

https://www.basketball-reference.com/awards/all_league_by_player.html

Jordan retired twice and Steph’s still only tied with him for total All-NBA selections (and behind 10-4 for first team). How do you get around that?

Shumonyu | GSW

19 | 13 hours ago

There’s no argument against Curry not being a top 5 player in 2017, 2018 and 2022. He didn’t make first team any of those years.

2014 and 2023 are other years where he’s basically a lock as a top 5 player as well.

Injury luck, positions and narratives all influence all-nba voting. It’s ultimately a media voted award.

If you just evaluate players based on how good they were, Curry has been playing at an all-nba level since 2013. There’s no argument against that.

Ok_Pineapple_Num | GSW

24 | 13 hours ago

Steph’s issue in all-time “greatest” discussions is that his resume is relatively weak among all-time greats. There are various reasons why his resume does not at all reflect how amazing he is, but only 1 FMVP and 4 first-teams is thin vs. other top 10 guys. That’s why he’s probably closer to #10 among “greatest” players ever.

But I’ll stand behind saying that Steph is a top 3 “best” player ever — only behind MJ and Lebron. Give me Steph over every other guy in NBA history EASILY. And I don’t think it’s crazy to pick Steph over MJ/Lebron either.

When he steps on the court he’s the most dangerous, lethal weapon in NBA history.

Shumonyu | GSW

33 | 13 hours ago

There’s no world where Steph wasn’t a top 5 player in 2017, 2018, or 2022. Like zero argument against it.

Those are all three seasons where he didn’t make first team lol. He’s had some bad luck with injuries, and all nba teams being voted on positions back in the day too.

internet_poster

5 | 10 hours ago

it’s funny because they won the title that year and he hit maybe the best level of his career in the playoffs, but he also played some of the worst ball of his career during the 2022 regular season. had a month and a half where he forgot how to shoot, got injured near the end of the season, he was lucky that the competition for all-NBA was so weak that year or he easily could have slipped to 3rd team.

nothing at all like ²⁰¹⁷⁄₂₀₁₈ where he was every bit the same player as the unanimous MVP but playing in second gear for the whole regular season (and he was really a monster in 2018 in particular, lots of advanced stats had him as the best player in the league that year).

Rojo438

13 | 13 hours ago

Good take, my argument is always this, I’ve watched the nba since 1977 and Steph really is the only player who literally changed the way the game is played. Certain coaches have brought changes to the game, and other players have caused teams to change the way they play when facing them, but Steph changed how the game is played. Kids don’t go for highlight dunks like they used to, they wear Steph jerseys and try to drill 30 footers now..

iGetBuckets3 | GSW

13 | 12 hours ago

Steph is so good at basketball that the entire rest of the league had to copy the way he plays just to have a chance at stopping the Warriors. No other player can say that.

OddConsideration7290

6 | 10 hours ago

the entire rest of the league had to copy the way he plays

I see this stated pretty often and it’s usually just taken as fact without any scrutiny at all.

I’d encourage people to think about it a little more.

How many offenses do you actually think play like the Warriors’ motion offense? Better yet, how many stars or players in GENERAL actually play like Steph Curry?

I think essentially nobody plays like Steph.

The “build around a superstar 3pt shooter who primarily plays off-ball” thing has actually not been copied all around the league. Not even close.

The Celtics won a chip going 5 out with shooters and a lot of isolation play - aka closer to the Harden Rockets. The Thunder also won a chip going 4 or 5 out with shooters and a lot of isolation play. Again, closer to the Harden Rockets. Did Brunson play like Steph? Nope. Anybody on the 2026 Knicks? Nope.

We can go back further. “Surround Giannis with shooters” nope. 2020 Lakers? Absolutely nothing like the Warriors.

So this has always been a bit confusing to me!

Now I imagine somebody will say ‘well nobody can do what he does, that’s to his credit’. And I’d agree. So it’s absolutely perplexing to see people say the complete opposite lol.

WhichHoes | GSW

5 | 5 hours ago

I like to also measure greatness by how much you have affected the careers of the other greats during your time in the league. If Curry is absent, LeBron probably gets 2 or 3 more championships.

Kevin Durant couldnt very well have none. Damian Dillard’s rank shoots up tremendously. Lots of 7 footers keep their jobs or get drafted. James Harden might have a different career. The clippers might be viewed muuuuuch different.

It’s all opinions at the end of the day, but he absolutely is the greatest player I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen prime LeBron.

Nobody in the history of basketball has his level of skill and mastery over the game of basketball. The way he breaks the game both onball and offball is truly unique. And he’s won the most campionships of his era. The only unanimous MVP in history, the 73-9 regular season record, the 16-1 playoff record, the greatest Olympics performance of all time…

All while being the smallest player on the court.

OddConsideration7290

If you think he has the greatest Olympics performance of all time, you do not know Carmelo Anthony. And if you just mean highlight wise Vince steals that shit easy with the dunk of death. And of course you have seen prime Lebron. The dude is still playing and not that far out of said prime. If you hadn’t you’d be 4

Raonak | New Zealand

OddConsideration7290

Sometimes when Steph has a bad game people make fun of the people who call him the GOAT. And then a few people will say ‘this is such a strawman, literally nobody thinks he’s the GOAT.’

I don’t think they realize that there are people - mostly Warriors fans, of course - who genuinely think he is better than Michael Jordan and LeBron James. They just only come out to post their comments after Steph’s good games and kinda hide otherwise.

And people will say ‘duh they’re Warriors fans’, but I do not know any Celtics, Spurs, or Rockets fans arguing for Bird, Duncan, or Hakeem as the GOAT, as random examples. I think the best analogy is Lakers fans with Kobe. And hey, fair enough. It’s still ridiculous and it’s okay to make fun of them for it because yeah, he’s not the GOAT lmao. Same way we should make fun of people who think Kobe’s the GOAT.

Dubious_Odor

3 | 13 hours ago

Curry changed how the game is played, thats what makes him GOAT status. Jordan did the same. Bron changed how the league works kicking off the super team era. Pick any of the three you can GOAT them all for different reasons.

Steph is the GOAT. Take away the physical advantages, and no other player can do what Steph does. Take LeBron and swap their height and weight, but keep their developed skills. LeBron can’t run down court like a locomotive for dunks or play bully ball in the paint anymore; his handles, 3 pt shot, ft %, and overall efficiency wouldn’t be as good without his height, whereas you give Steph that 6’9 height and 250 lbs with his current skill set, he would win MVP 10 years in a row. Shaq is another example. Many have him in the top 5, but for what? He couldn’t dribble; he couldn’t shoot FTs, mid-range, 3-pointers, floaters, etc. Isn’t that the whole essence of basketball? But purely because of his height and weight, he was able to bully ball his way into the top 5. So yeah I understand people like to use accolades when comparing the greatest of all time, but these accolades are awarded a lot of time to those with physical advantages compared to steph. If we’re talking about pure skill with just a ball and a net, Stephen curry is the greatest player of all time.
