Turnover problems persist for Austin this season (5 AST, 5 TOV tonight) but he continues to be one of the most efficient scoring guards in the league. On the season he is averaging 23.6 PTS on 68.5% TS, 53.⁹⁄₄₄.⁴⁄₈₆.5 splits. Unfortunately his FT% is keeping him just out of the 50/40/90 club.

His teammate Luka Doncic is also just outside the 50/40/90 club since he is only scoring 38.3 PPG shooting 49.⁷⁄₄₂.⁷⁄₈₈.7 on 68.3% TS.

They’ll probably end the season as the highest scoring duo since Harden/Westbrook in 2020. Pretty cool

Fascinating. Harden (34.3) & Westbrook (27.2) averaged 61.5 in ¹⁹⁄₂₀ is 4th All-Time (1st Post Merger)Then Luka (33.9) & Kyrie (25.6) averaged 59.5 in ²³⁄₂₄ is 6th / 2nd.

They’re currently at 61.9 with Luka’s 38.3 and Reeves’ 23.6. That would be good for 3rd all time and they aren’t getting near Baylor/West’s 69.1 in ⁶¹⁄₆₂.

To put in perspective the record, Wilt/Arizin’s 72.3 PPG in ⁶¹⁄₆₂ (the same season as Baylor/West), if this year’s current top 2 scorers in the league, Luka & Ant, put up their current numbers as teammates, they still wouldn’t have the #1 spot of all time.

He looks stiff and slow this year and that’s hurting his handle imo

But he’s been ultra efficient at scoring still, so it’s been kind of nice to see him be “bad” but still put up numbers like this

TheRealCoolio

41 | 13 hours ago

His body composition is just different this year. He looks a little heavier, and it’s probably him putting on muscle in the offseason to finish through contact better and to take on contact when he plays defense. Just from the eye test, he doesn’t look as nimble, but he still has a quick first step. He’s more keen to take advantage of guards overplaying him or reacting really quick to a defense that isn’t set. He’s still playing great, but he’s just not as overall quick as he has been the last couple seasons. I think it’s by design, though.

Andy_Wiggins | MIN

Yeah, I’ve caught maybe 3 lakers games, and he’s looked kind of bad in most of what I’ve watched, but he’s producing at a very high level.

Maybe it’s just the moments where Luka is off the floor that are standing out.

yalecrazy | LAL

36 | 13 hours ago

That’s exactly the main reason. Their on/off numbers are insane. When both on, both of their scoring output jumps thru the roof. When Austin is on, it’s with Sexton and Grimes and this 3 guard lineup just doesn’t work. Lo and behold, JJ doesn’t use that this game and they didn’t blow the lead when Luka was sitting. I expect him to be his usual self after today. Still gotta cut turnovers but other than that, I really can’t complain the way that AR is playing right now.

_Robbert_

3 | 13 hours ago

If you watched him in that warriors game. It’s like seared into your mind how bad he was that game. It overshadows the fact he’s been playing well overall

ThinMap9138

-2 | 13 hours ago

Honestly though, he’s never been that quick or fast or had the best handles. He looks more hesitant than slow imo.

Those turnovers are getting to his head but this is what he does best, in the regular season at least.

Just score, and do it efficiently too. Which he did tonight.

I don’t even think he’s been in game shape yet, he bulked up in the offseason and I can see he’s struggling with handling when he was much more fluid and faster..he’ll figure it out sooner than later.

Reaves is one of the best shot makers in the league

He’s elite at the act of getting the ball in the hoop

I think he looks lackluster sometimes because he’s unique in the sense he’s not really a good primary ball handler, a lot of his points are very quiet and in the flow of the game

He has never really passed the eye test on first glance. It’s part of what made his rise so fun to watch. Youd see him score in some really crazy ways that you wouldn’t think would work, but somehow he keeps doing it.

BrownSniper929

From what I’ve seen on here, Miami decided to double Luka which ran different to how other teams have been dealing with him before. Suffice to say, he managed to punish those double teams via passing to the open man.

Also saw something about how Bam and Giannis handled the defensive end that made their help defense less effective. A coaching advantage for JJ in this case.

--Alix-- | DAL

1 | 2 hours ago

Nah, other teams did double Luka, warriors included. However this game the team made an emphasis to show that they know how to play the 4v3, something which got them destroyed when they were going against the warriors.

steph_hurry

3 | 9 hours ago

I mean Luka’s LA offense is the best in the league rn but on defense they conceded 117 inc 51% from the field and 39% from 3. It was really just the 3rd quarter that LA played decent defense, Lakers did allow 72 in the first half…

thetitsOO | LAL

1 | 4 hours ago

Only allowed 45 total in the 2nd half. It was really the 42pt 2nd quarter only that the defense didn’t look great, lots of missed assignments from the bench and Giannis was getting whatever he wanted and in single coverage

Luka averages more turnovers than AR, but that is never mentioned

OmfgHaxx | NBA

8 | 13 hours ago

39% usage rate vs 25% usage rate. You would expect that.

Maleficent-King-799

-9 | 13 hours ago

Luka’s 5.5 turnovers is not expected regardless of usage.

Are you a Laker fan or just a Luka fan. Anyhow westbrook averaged 3.5 turnovers on 27% usage and Laker fans killed him about turnovers

MostYesterday2822

8 | 13 hours ago

wrestbook was not averaging nearly 40 on 67 ts and also winning games, he was doing worse, with half the turnovers of Luka too

OmfgHaxx | NBA

5 | 13 hours ago

I’m simply explaining to you why you would expect Luka to average more turnovers. Obviously turnovers are bad and his 11 turnover game is really bringing up his average. Of course he needs to be better but a player with his historically high usage is going to have turnovers.

Westbrook’s problem was his dogshit shooting efficiency. One of the most inefficient players in the entire NBA when he was on the Lakers.

Rank3r | Slovenia

8 | 13 hours ago

Because that is a brain dead statement, just look at the usage rate of each player.

Maleficent-King-799

-6 | 13 hours ago

Are you a Laker fan or just a Luka fan watching box scores. Turnovers are killing the Lakers as team. If your point guard is averaging almost 6 turnovers a game, it’s an issue regardless of usage

YouKilledKenny12 | LAL

Dude they scored 138 points. They beat the Heat by 21. They are 6-2. Luka is averaging close to 40 ppg on like 67% true shooting percentage.
