Two years ago at the 2024 NBA Draft, the Charlotte hornets declined a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies to stay at 6 and take Tidjane Salaun. Now they decline his fourth year option and he will soon be out of rotation
two years ago, the hornets and grizzlies agreed in principle to trade pick 6 (Memphis targeting Donovan Clingan) for pick 9 and future firsts. instead the hornets backed out to take Tidjane Salaun way earlier than anyone anticipated. it was a major reach at the time and after 2+ seasons of barely seeing the floor except when the team is injured, Salaun’s fourth year option was declined. ends what was arguably the worst draft pick in team history due to how indefensible it was at the time. That says a lot considering how many terrible picks we have, granted usually the players were all Americans instead of backups on mediocre French league teams
charlotte needed a center and passed on two older bigs, Clingan and Zach Edey. Looking at 2026, both are cemented as franchise cornerstones and going to be extended in the offseason. meanwhile Charlotte is still searching for big man minute. yes they have Diabate but he is a free agent this offseason and there is no extension yet.
overall, a case in bad draf process, choosing to take a fringe lottery pick over the best available players on the board. Charlotte is still feeling the aftershocks from this
