Wemby reflects on his “dirty” play during the playoffs “it showed my limits more than anything else, going out there you need to play basketball not beat the **** out of people”
The Naz elbow was way worse
I was surprised to watch the clip and it wasn’t that one
No no that was his revenge story, not his “I was too immature” story, nba media told me so.
Yet was not a suspension or fine
It was a great playoff run but it really showed his age. Getting grabbed and pulled and pushed every possession would get anyone understandably frustrated but letting those emotions boil over is how you lose
Spurs needed Chris Paul or equivalent vet presence
Look - I know it’s been this way for a long time, but we need to have a serious discussion about why the nba insists on officiating the game completely different in the regular season vs playoffs. If I’m a player who’s come up in the league and gets used to it being a certain way, it shouldn’t be a total change up of how the game is reffed when I have my first playoff run.
It’s cool for there to be more player intensity and different scheming obviously, but the insistence on not calling shit that’s called all year then expecting players to just get over it is fucking stupid. No other sport functions this way and I’m tired of the nba doing this. Let the players decide the games all year not just in the postseason
Gets way too easily frustrated in high pressure situations. I understand this sounds like hating from a Knicks fan but it’s eminently fixable and it sounds like he’s already aware of it
I think it compounds with his stamina issues. Much easier to get frustrated when you’re totally drained.
It’s also partly an age/maturity thing. Wemby is 22 years old. A lot of 22 year old men have the same issues and mature out of them. Most of them are just not on the biggest stage in the NBA finals.
Yeah, it seems like if you poke the bear a little too much you can get into his head (I don’t mean that as the obvious joke). Same thing he did to Naz Reid.
Great teams have pests that are on the floor specifically to get under the star player’s skin and he took the bait. That’s a maturity thing though to know how not to fall for it.
Agreed 100%. At least he isn’t shying away from these moments, albeit he needs to learn how ti maintain his composure. But he’s young and self-aware. Gaining experience will definitely help.
i always figured he would grow out of it. everyones dumb when theyre 22. losing your cool when the pressure is on is not uncommon. being a hater was fun but im kinda done being a hater now
100% agree. But I’m glad it seems like he’s aware of it. Honestly though if that’s one of his biggest flaws I’ll take it. He could be punching people in practice or something like that.
I respect the acknowledgment. Hope he stays healthy and is able to have another great year
Teams will constantly pull and shove Wemby whenever they can in the playoffs and it’s Wemby’s job not to let it get to him.
But the team has to protect him from that. It’s gotta be like hockey. Teams will not let you just fuck around with their star player.
Similar conversation is happening in soccer right now. Yesterday Arsenal beat Liverpool. The refs missed a stonewall penalty (basically a 90% chance of a goal) when Isak got his shirt yanked back as he went for a header. Problem is Isak didn’t fall down and roll around, and he didn’t scream at the refs. From a sporting perspective I applaud him, but as a Liverpool fan we’d tie or win the game if he fell down. Same is true in basketball. It’s unbearable to watch but there’s a reason why players dramatize fouls and chase the ref down the court when they don’t get calls. The reason is the refs are incompetent and too cowardly to make tough decisions unless you make them decide.
If the officiating doesn’t improve, the only options are to play the dirty game and hopefully get the calls you deserve or let yourself be frustrated to the point where you give the refs a very easy decision.
Laughing at how civil people are about the Spurs having a really dirty run last playoffs lol
I wouldnt say anything about that last series especially was civil lmao
The fact that this dude is against sports betting has helped me reconcile my hate for his dirty plays.
The dude completely lost his mental this series. Tbf though Knicks fans were throwing eggs at him outside his hotel
It was happening in the series before as well when took to his elbow to the neck of Naz
This is his youth showing. He’ll be better about this stuff as he gets older and has more experience.
Young player has an honest moment of self-reflection and half the comments here are “once a dirty player, always a dirty player.” Sorry but did Knicks fans memory hole KAT being called a soft big who could never win a championship?
I’m actually impressed by his answer and I’m a certified Wemby hater after the finals lol
