JJ Redick “In the 2nd half I can think of 4 times that we turned down wide-open 3s. I’ll take these guys out. You gotta shoot the ball when you’re open. These guys gotta understand what the purpose is of what we’re trying to do” It has been speculated that Grimes was the primary target of JJ’s rant.
The Lakers improved to 5-2, but Redick was unhappy with several possessions in which players turned down clean looks from deep despite Luka Doncic creating advantages against Toronto’s defense.
“He’s doing a really good job of making plays when there’s two on the ball,” Redick said of Doncic. “I know in the second half, I can think of four times that we turned down wide-open threes.
“I’ll take these guys out. You gotta shoot the ball when you’re open.”
Redick stressed that the issue partly stems from Los Angeles still trying to build chemistry with a new group.
“Again, it’s the new group thing,” Redick added. “These guys gotta understand what the purpose is of what we’re trying to do.
“When you get an advantage, you gotta keep the advantage and shoot it.”
While Redick did not single out any player by name, NBA reporter Jovan Buha believes Quentin Grimes may be one of the players most affected by the warning.
Grimes had another quiet offensive night against Toronto, finishing with seven points, three assists, and four turnovers on four shots.
