Wait hes 90% from the FT line? He’s always been around league average for a non C so that’s a monstrous jump.

Could just be a smaller sample but I wonder how often hes shot 90%+ in 50 sample batches.

Yep his free throw routine has changed seems like he worked on it in the off season

If he did that, he’d always step-back free throws!

he started yelling “short!” after he releases the ball

not even joking (well, joking about it improving his % maybe, but not joking that he does it)

Over his career, he typically gets 50 FTA every 5.8 games. So I looked at his FT% over 6 game stretches. He has been at least 90% over 5 6-game stretches, with some overlaps:

11/1/2019 to 11/11/2019 - 91.1%

5/7/2021 to 5/16/2021 - 90.0%

12/6/2023 to 12/16/2023 - 91.7%

3/26/2025 to 4/4/2025 - 90.4%

3/29/2025 to 4/8/2025 - 90.0%

EbolaDP

Technically every time Jokic won it was over Luka.

Ok_Turn6757 | LAL

2 | 8 hours ago

Aside from the fact Luka created the most points per game in a season ever, the Nuggets won 57 wins with a historically healthy season, with Jokic’ best players being Jamal Murray, Gordon, MPJ, KCP and Christian Braun. Mavs won 50 games with the 2nd most injured roster in the West, only behind the lottery grizzlies, with Luka’s best players being Kyrie who missed 30 games, a rookie Derrick Lively who missed 30 games, Grant Williams who was terrible for them and THJ. Luka had to average 38/9/11 on 40 minutes a game in December to even stay at .500 because half the roster was out, when they finally got some health and talent around him and traded for PJ and Gafford they finished the season on a 16-2 run, a ~70 win pace. So yes, I do think context matters here

Luka was playing good defense before getting injured last year when he was averaging like 40 and people were still talking about him like he was a cone lol. He’s a slow and big guard so he gets blown past a lot, but he’s generally always been passable-good on defense. People really just don’t actually watch what he does and carry on narratives about him.

People hold that Celtics finals against him so bad when both his legs were injured and he was visibly hobbling up and down the court 😭 obviously he couldn’t give that much effort then. He was still by far the best player on the Mavs that series despite his injuries.

RevolutionaryGuru613

WingedBacon | Germany

On top of that, the Celtics series way overblew his defensive liabilities even then. He wasn’t good by any means but as a team the Mavs held Boston to below their avg points per possession and below their avg points per game total.

Could you just for once look at the facking game and note that the narrative is so 2023-24.

edub1906

Well if folks watched the games or checked his advanced metrics they would know that the national media narrative of him being a cone of defense is false. It’s a casual take to say that he’s bad at defense so far this season. His advanced numbers show that he’s in the 85th percentile which actually shows he has been playing above average defense.

Nah as someone who watched close to every Luka game since his rookie year, he usually takes some time to get in rhythm to start the season and shoots his 3 at low to mid 30%. With the Mavs you would just wait until December to January where the avg went up to like 38-40%.

Obviously he got hurt in the end of some seasons, but other than that he is a slow starter, except for this year.

People kept trying to act like the criticism of his physique was unnecessary or silly just because he could still perform on offense. A difference of 8.1ppg.Jordan led the league in scoring in 1987 with 37.1ppg, the next best was 29.0ppg. A difference of 8.1ppg.Spooky.

Seeding matters (mattered, maybe?), and those guys didn’t have the seeding. Pretty strong chance Luka ends up much the same.

Seeding matters until it doesn’t for the voters. Hello Westbrook and Jokic MVP.

BlazeBBQ | DAL

1 | 36 minutes ago

With the 65 game rule seeding matters a bit less I think cuz the voters will have to go down the list and cross out a bunch of players by April like they did last year. Also the west got weaker especially with the early season injuries to the wolves and OKC so it’s possible for Luka to carry this lakers squad to the 4th seed whereas before it felt like a longshot.

Smart didn’t want to stay for whatever reason, but Luke and Hayes absolutely should’ve been re-signed. Especially for what they signed for elsewhere. Grimes and Sexton were shockingly bad signings though. Crazy to me that Sexton got the MLE and someone like Anfernee Simons is getting only $6M/yr.

Between players like Ant getting injured, SGA with voter fatigue and the thunder injured should hinder his consistency, Jokic and Wemby look a bit inconsistent(Wemby especially can look like the GOAT one night and human the next one) and who knows if theyll make the game threshold… This season might be the one Luka finally gets his, he deserves it too

Its still a bit early tho, for now its best to just cheer for health

Lukas had stretches like this before, we probably (just like with Ant) should not start counting his chickens incase he gets injured again too.

Voter fatigue is the biggest myth ever, Shai’s straight up playing way worse than his mvp years. THATS why he won’t win. The only years in nba history that can be argued is 2011 and embiid’s mvp. But really only 2011.

XiaoRCT | OKC

2 | 3 hours ago

Voter fatigue is a thing, if SGA has a shitter season obviously it wont get to the point it plays a part

Its just that obviously the MVP award doesnt have a lot of situations like Shai or Joker where it could even be a factor

inv4alfonso

How you can look at NBA history and argue that voter fatigue is not real is mind boggling to me. We also know who some of the voters are and the biases they have presented against certain players.

HitboxOfASnail | OKC

he also has to meet the 65 games tho, which isn’t a guarantee with his injury history either. MVP this season may end up going to someone like Cade Cunningham. a great player but not someone would consider truly upper echelon

celticspoop | BOS

-1 | 5 hours ago

While I agree Luka is probably his own tier, I think it’s dismissive to say Tatum is nowhere near him. Luka is on a heater right now and Tatum is kind of off to a slow start shooting, and their numbers aren’t incomparable. Realistically, if things hold Tatum would only be able to compete out due to injuries and some insane narrative building, but we’ve seen that before.

StudiousLebronJames

1 | an hour ago

i don’t need to look at is these first few games lol. there is plenty of sample size that shows luka is an all time scorer and all time playmaker at the same time. tatums offensive contributions are on the level of booker and mitchell, which is great sure nowhere near luka. he has the edge on defense while being a much less capable offensive player. and individual offense is far more important than individual defense

No, Luka gets injured, his stats come down to earth, and then he takes a few weeks to ramp up again. It’s one of the reasons he hasn’t won an MVP because there’s always periods during the season where he looks a little discombobulated. They have to find ways to keep his usage down and probably load manage if he has any chance of sustaining this play, but they basically need his heroics to win games right now.
