80 years ago - the first ever NBA game was played.
Look at that ball movement
gotta say, i would legit watch an entire game of this. it’s mesmerizing. that bounce pass in that final clip is a fucking DIME too.
Yes, it was! Caught my eye, too!
same thought! daaaaamn
Fuck, this is awesome. Nice to learn that announcers have been talking out of their ass forever. Bring back cute ball movement!!
Their
Ty. Two much Halooween fun last night.

Now THESE are the plumbers and fireman. Not the greats of the 60s onwards
60s was still pretty mid lol which is why Bill and Wilt were so dominant. They were two of the very rare guys that could play in the NBA during any era. Feel like thing started cooking in the NBA once the late 70s came around
No its not, but its far too involved to discuss here.
This era had no 24 second clock a 6 foot key and all white guys and it was drive into a wall under the basket
Bill and wilt would’ve been freaks in any era…
That’s what I said…
Regardless, they would have stood out even if they were playing today. Both men were aberrations
Bill was 6’9 225 with no handle and no shot. How exactly would he dominate?
His absolute peak modern version would be Dennis Rodman with great IQ. In today’s game he barely sees the court on most good teams.
Bill, if he was born in this era, would have handles and a shot.
have you been to the Basketball HOF in Springfield. On the inside of the dome there are pics of all the players who ever played, from the start to now. It’s all white guys until it gets to Wilt and Russell then it jumps to like 50% Black Americans and keeps climbing. Incredible influence on the sport.
once Bird & Magic came around*
I never knew the Toronto Huskies played against the Knicks in the first NBA game. That’s pretty cool!
In the Mattamy Athletic Centre today. I believe they even have TMU final exams on that court.
It was Maple Leaf Gardens back then, and they would have played at the ice level, which is now the Loblaws at ground level. The location of the original face off centre dot is painted on the floor in the aisle with the soy sauce. The Matamy Centre basketball court was added as part of the conversion from Maple Leaf Gardens many decades later.
Five years ago we had a 75 year anniversary Raps revenge game in the Garden.
This game was in the Basketball Association of America. The NBA was created in 1949 with the merger of the BAA and the National Basketball Association and was considered a new league. They retconned the BAA seasons into the NBA history around half a decade later.
They were already rewriting history by ‘51, claiming the NBA was a direct continuation of the BAA. Purely done to discredit the NBL teams, much like the league did 25 years later with the ABA.
Similar to trying to act like the 2002 Charlotte Hornets and 2003 New Orleans Hornets are not the same franchise despite having the same roster and head coach
I always like to throw around the fun fact that the first NBA game was technically in Canada
Basketball is Canadian 🍁💪
No, it’s not. It was created in America. The creator was born in Canada, but that doesn’t make it Canadian.
If a Canadian has a child in America, that child is still Canadian.
(They’re American too, but the point stands)
NAH.
You can have Elon and Ted Cruz though.
That generation’s KD warriors
That generation’s KD warriors 73-9 warriors + KD.
his comment but worse
No, he made it sound like it’s KD’s warriors. No, that wasn’t his team, it’s Steph’s.
I love how the Knicks roster looks like my Bar Mitzvah in invite list.
They also look like they’re in their 40s
Jews used to ball tf out until the point shaving scandal got CCNY shut down lol
When we were a poor heavily discriminated against minority, a lot of Jews turned to sports. Jews were overrepresented in early 20th century boxing and mid century basketball.
Well sports were also disproportionately concentrated on NY in the early 20th century and there are a lot of Jews there
The original Knicks team was heavily populated by Jewish players. In NYC in the 40s, basketball was almost as Jewish as Bar Mitzvahs were.
The Jewish players faced a ton of heckling from the crowds and the Knicks owner Ned Irish must have heard a lot of it. He may have been worried that having too many Jewish players was bad for publicity in a league where few teams even turned a profit. By the time the next season rolled around, the roster was almost completely absent of them. Obviously, he never said that he got rid of the players because they were Jewish, but it was likely not a coincidence.
All Jewish team 🇮🇱
Jewish doesn’t automatically equal Israeli, and besides that this game was played a year and a half before the modern country was formally established.
i feel like that last play with the staggered double screen would work today.
and that fucking bounce pass between three defenders? ngl, i haven’t seen a bounce pass that nice in the NBA in a loooong time. the idea that these guys wouldn’t be shit in today’s game, if raised today, is nnonsense.
these guys were still plenty skilled. they were still pro athletes.
Are you trying to say “if those players were born 18 years ago and played today?”
Because, maybe. Except they’d be playing and learning in a completely different atmoshpere.
If you’re trying to take those players and put them in today’s game then, no, you’re smoking something incredibly strong.
These classy gentlemen are sneaky athletic.
Real students of the game. Lunchpail guys through and through!
First guys in, last guys out.
EXACTLY. Great call. Very observant
You missed the joke.
they got footage of this but not Wilt 100
I play basketball with Tommy Byrnes III the grandson of the player on the Knicks.
Is he good?
Is this from a documentary? I want to watch more of this show!
You see that cute weave and go at 0:53?
Flop merchants
Brunson had to go down to the film archives stored at MSG’s basement to master the original “head-snap” technique.
My GOAT 🫡
Born too late. I woulda had 200 points in this game
You woulda been run off the court tubs
Lol truth
Just in case anyone isn’t familiar with Geoffrey Asmus’ joke about White athletes back in the day
they dribbled like that because it was the rule. oddly enough, it’s still the rule the refs just let guys put their hand COMPLETELY under the ball every single dribble. you aren’t even supposed to have your hand on the side of the ball, let alone under it.
it’s not that they physically couldn’t do a penny hardaway style crossover. it would just be called a carry and they would turn the ball over. this was before the shot clock, so turnovers were a bigger deal because merely holding the ball was far more advantageous.
This was ill
Some things never change. New York Knick style = Cuter players
they’d have a heart attack if they saw maxey hoops
What is this from?
Before I watched this I wondered if I could have played in this era in my 20’s. After seeing that ball movement my answer is nope!
