The Golden State Valkyries won the WNBA title in just their 2nd year of existence. In the upcoming NBA Expansion, do you think the NBA will allow the new teams to be competitive right away or it will heavily penalize them like they did with the Raptors and the Grizzlies in the 1995 Expansion?
This were the conditions of the 1995 expansion:
Each of the twenty-seven other NBA teams had protected eight players from their roster, and the Raptors and the Grizzlies selected fourteen and thirteen unprotected players respectively, one from each team.
Both the Canadian teams were hampered by the NBA’s decision to deny them one of the top five picks in the draft. The teams would not be allowed a top draft pick in the following three seasons, even if they should win the lottery. The teams were also hindered from using their full salary cap the first two season.
The Raptors famously won the lottery in 1996 but they had to swap positions with the Sixers since they weren’t allowed to select for 1st. So instead of Allen Iverson they got Marcus Camby.
The Raptors made the playoff for the first time only in their 5th year, while the Grizzlies…well, you know the story.
In their 6 years in Vancouver they finished last in their division in all but one season and never won more than 30% of its games in any season. In total, the team won 101 games, lost 359, and never qualified for the NBA playoffs. They recolated to Memphis and made the playoff only in their 9th year.
