Steve Kerr on Yaxel being an older rookie: “In the NBA we penalize guys for being 23. He was his own worst enemy. He should’ve just come out four years ago completely unprepared, and then he would’ve been the second pick in the draft.”
Bro just called out the James wiseman draft pick on camera 😂😂
Know Halburton Stan Steve Kerr.
Lmafo you were gonna draft lamelo but you got scared when klay tore his Achilles that day
I think Wiseman was somehow a consensus pick. Doubt we’d have picked Lamelo but that’d have been so great
If true that would be funny considering they built their entire on unstable ankles of Steph Curry.
And Kuminga
we fkn needed a player like Wagner too; could’ve contributed significantly from year 1. Lacob just couldn’t get over Himself.
2nd overall pick James Wiseman catching strays
I still root for him. 😢
More like a shot on warriors owner
Now that’s the dark shit I’ve been looking for
my man thinks subtlety will register with these clickbait trolls…
ESPN tomorrow:
Kerr on Lendelborg: “He should’ve just come out four years ago”
Reddit, soon after:
Kerr: “He should’ve just come”
wow this took a right turn…
OK now what
“The troubled Kerr later appeared to use an ethnic slur when questioned about his son.”
their production teams have enough wwe-inspired dummies who would actually suggest this; you know, for “fan engagement” 😉
ESPN tomorrow
Kerr says Wiseman clears Yaxel
He’s too much of a hot little slut for them
By that you obviously mean the NBA reporters.
you obviously mean
obviously? 🙂↕️
I’m gonna be real, as a generally hardcore sports fan that puts NBA toward the bottom of the list, the fact that anyone watching this thinks it’s subtle is fairly affirming of my stance that the NBA is bottom of the barrel for professional sports
you’re right, nba is more of an “urban sport”; SEC football & the NFL is where you find the high-iq fans; my bad.
I like hockey, but you go ahead and make up whatever meme reality you want
you’ll be ok
is this a dig at themselves for picking james wiseman at 2nd?
It’s got layers. Like an onion.
Parfait has layers
So do onions
I’m not 100% sure Steve meant it this way because he’s not usually mean. That might be a little too harsh for him.
But it sure looks like that’s what he meant.
The whole nba as a whole loves the idea of upside rather than production at lower levels. It’s both good and bad for the game
When the goal is to achieve something that only 1⁄30 teams can achieve each year you kinda have to take some risks.
It is really weird how people conflate potential with current skill tho. His age is a lock on him as a prospect but it’s not a knock on him as a player. Who cares if his potential isn’t that much higher than his current skill if his current skill is already fine for where he was drafted.
Fans overvalue picks. So many “let’s trade a good player for a spin on the roulette wheel” comments after every loss.
Yes
It’s provocative, it gets people going
Kerr is only self aware when he thinks he has something to gain from it
Edit: downvote me bro Jordan Poole still exists
Steve Kerr is too high brow for casuals
Saying the second pick specifically is diabolical.
This definitely wasn’t a shot at the 3 game collegiate career player they took 2nd overall
Could be a dig at Trey Lance too!
classic Jordan fan
I do think there’s a lot of reaches for potential rather than ready to start “good floor” players but I do think generally the NBA is pretty good at evaluating talent. For every Yaxel there’s guys like Daron Holmes who just ride benches despite being drafted for supposedly being NBA ready
Chris Duarte is the guy I remember everyone hyping up to be the NBA ready guy.
Daron slander will not be tolerated even when justified
The fact Spencer Jones got into rotations before Holmes did when we were dealing with injuries last year made me lose faith I’m sorry brother
TBF holmes tore his achilles in summer league before he even got to play an nba game
No doubt. That was a huge bummer. He was a guy draftheads were pretty nuts about that year.
I get it tbh. I think he could get more time but when Zeke of all people outplays you with the same minutes… that’s not good
Wasn’t Holmes himself injured for most of last season?
Yeah Yaxel is the exception not the rule in a lot of ways. It could change a bit in the NIL era but generally, if you’re not getting drafted until you’re a super-senior, you’re a player with some serious questions about NBA translation.
So many older players with the “high floor” tag just end up not having the physicality or skill level necessary to succeed at the next level. Yaxel as someone with elite tools and proven winning play is almost always not lasting that long in college.
yeah yaxel is the rare example of a guy who didn’t have a ton of organized ball experience and was able to develop skills very quickly. he couldve been drafted a year earlier but the year at michigan really helped his stock
The age discrimination thing is weird. AR didn’t even get drafted, and he was NBA starter level right out the gate. Back in the day this wasn’t an issue. David Robinson went into the NBA number 1 overall when he was 24. That also worked out pretty well.
AR asked not to be drafted tbf, otherwise he would have gone second round.
Totally misleading.
David Robinson spent 2 years in the navy before he entered the league. In a world where most college players went into the draft after 4 years of college, he was a completely typical first round draft pick in his era. (Only except for the part about being a 7 foot tall no brainer pro athlete who chose to serve his country and hang out in submarines.)
Not misleading at all, in fact you agreed with them! That’s the point, a 4 year college player was the typical first round draft pick not one and done teens. It wasn’t an issue to draft a 22-24 year old player if they could play back the.
The reason why good college old players are not drafted is that gms dont know how they work with not being the number 1 guy
I genuinely feel likes its all just a big fucking toss up
Obviously there’s guys like Lebron and Wemby who everybody knows are going to be good because of their unique attributes, but for 99.999% of the rest of the players, there is just sooooo many different factors that come into play into whether or not they will succeed in the nba that its impossible to accurately make an assessment on a players’ potential most of the time
There will always be exceptions
Damn, Bronny catching strays
23 years old?? basically a grandpa
23 years old?
Actually, no: Born September 30, 2002 (age 24)
you are gonna nail your audition as a robot in that upcoming play
Meanwhile the nuggets are celebrating their 23 year old rookie as the promised one lmao
Lmaooooo the shot at Wiseman
Feels more like a shot at the Warriors management. Couldve drafted for Melo or trade up for AE.
Timberwolves were not going to give up AE lmao what
He’d be out of the league by now had he entered the league at 18-20. Made the best decision possible staying in college and looks like he should have a 10 year nba career because of the choices he made. Nothing but respect for Yax
One thing I was thinking about with Yaxel and being older… if you draft a 19 year old that needs a few years, he is going to be getting good just as his rookie contract runs out and he isn’t cheap anymore. If you draft an older, more developed player, you get his prime 24-28 year range under a rookie contract.
Drafted 19. Has 7 years til he’s 26. By then he may be a all-star. He has 7 years to get there.
Drafted 24. Either he is an all star his rookie season or show massive flashes he can be an all-star in the next 2 years. He has 2 years to get accustomed to the NBA and produce.
That’s why drafts top picks are young.
Edit: to add. Coming in young means you have a longer duration of producing. If the drop off is 36, the 19 year old will have 17 years. The 24 year old only has 12.
The amount of you not realizing this is a satire response is alarming
NBA reddit and media is so fucking dog shit
This feels like Patrick Williams slander
No I won’t elaborate
He could be playing for the Knicks now!
He could be an NBA champion now!
Nobody likes when you’re 23.
Is this a shot at wiseman lol
I dont think anyone wouldve drafted him if he had declared after averaging 6 points per game at a community college.
No one is happier to not have a young player on the team than Steve Kerr
Wasn’t he playing his 3rd year at junior college 4 years ago
Double entendre from ol’ 3-ball Steve…
In the NBA you get penalized for being #23 😉
