Basically because he wouldn’t run back on fastbreaks a lot of the time. In the playoffs, he’s always been incredible. He turns it on whenever he really wants to. His half court defense has always been a strength

Going into this game LeBron was statistically the best defender in the league this season. obviously very limited sample size, but it means a lot considering the narrative around him for the last couple of years.

The narrative started partly cause as the older he got on some of those Cavs and laker teams, he had to pick and choose when to exert himself fully as his stamina wasn’t at the cyborg levels jt used to be.

Also partly because at this stage, the ability to chain together high intensity effort plays over and over is just not possible. So from the outside, after he digs down to help, recovers to the shooter, but can’t also can’t rotate back over to deter the guy driving the close out, it looks like he gave up. In reality, he’s just 42 and that’s the best he can do at this point imo.

Another reason is simply because he does have bad body language. Sometimes when he makes a rotation and a teammate blows an assignment, he knows he doesn’t have the stamina anymore to help even if he wanted to. When he gives up on those type of plays, his body language is very obvious and stands out.

Lastly, he’s probably the most polarizing athlete ever. You look at how childish great players like Barkley sound when he gets brought up. Now imagine regular people.

but when he can focus more on defense, he’s still an all around good 2-4 defender (and defend 5 in spurts) and elite defensive floor general.

Most underrated aspect of his game is surely his IQ. Not that people don’t acknowledge it, but it’s not talked about enough.

I wouldn’t call that coasting though, not because he couldn’t score more he def could.

But from a team perspective he’s the best passer on the team by miles, while they are overloaded with scoring talent.

I think this is just what their offense should look like, LeBron in the 18-22ish ppg range with him primarily being a passing fulcrum.

But that’s exactly what they need from Lebron. If they need him to score 27 points a game, that’s probably a bad sign. That would also cause him more fatigue and drop his numbers while effecting his defense
