I’m guessing their ramp up process is terrible. Sudden increase in physical activity is one of the leading causes of injury, in both normal people and athletes. Obviously could be bad luck, but I’m thinking players are slacking until preseason starts then have a month to get into season shape and its just not enough.

Maybe having the training camp be like 1 week, and then have the pre-season be 4 games where the main players barely play isn’t a great idea to start a season.

This is a cop out: The problem is systemic and that’s why it’s not just the Thunder getting hit by injuries. The NBA has pushed players to play more and play harder with more running, more quick stops and starts, more perpetual movement. It isn’t sustainable. The league has a confluence of forces that push every element of basketball to the absolute farthest extent possible. Human bodies are not meant to be pushed to these extremes, and it’s even harder when you’ve selected for the tallest people only. The NBA was more sustainable when people ripped cigs at halftime. If you look at clips from the 80s or 90s it’s jarring how much less physical activity there was on a normal play. I don’t know how you make teams play with less movement. Part of it was rules changes over time adding up, but a lot is science pushing bodies to that far extreme and analytics being welcomed into the team building process. You can’t put that genie back in the bottle. I think the NBA’s problems are less existential than the NFL’s, but it’s just brutal how much time from legit Hall of Fame level players is lost.
