Ive sports betted like twice in my life for a grand total of $10, but odds are pretty useful for putting a number on nominal probability or at least sentiment for sports outcomes, which is very useful if your job is discussing sports. I look at MMA odds before fight cards all the time to gauge how close a fight is expected to be or how promising/hyped a prospect I’ve never watched is etc.

I think it is fine, I treat it as an engine to talk about sports. It is kind of like polling a bunch of people and asking them who do you think is going to win and by how much?

Especially since about half of the NBA’s viewership is 25 or younger. Promoting something so heavily to young people that is so dangerous and can destroy lives just doesn’t feel right at all.

I actually think he’s had a big influence on legalizing gambling. He’s been an influential sports x pop-culture personality for decades, and normalizing gambling has always been a big part of his brand.

BetMGM airs radio ads where a guy gives recommendations on how to wager on upcoming games. He’ll say something like “I think both Jaylen Daniels and the Commanders have a great bounce back game this week and I think Green Bay’s defense can be exploited over the top. I’ll take Daniels to go over 220 passing yards against the Packers on Thursday Night Football, and the Commanders to cover a seven and a half point spread on BetMGM.”

It’s unfathomable that anyone would not see this as an obvious conflict of interest and disregard his recommendations entirely. “The bookmaker, who has a vested interest in you making bad bets, has hired this person to tell you which way to bet. How, exactly, do you think this could benefit you in any way?”

One of the local radio stations had the same guy on a show leading up to the Super Bowl and asked him to offer some prop bets, and before he would give any, he said repeatedly that nobody should take his betting advice because he’s full of shit. He was all good times and jokes going into the segment and then became overly insistent that people shouldn’t bet based on advice from a stranger.

Bill 100% bets on awards even though he has a vote. He’s done this for years where he’ll talk about awards odds on his pod for 15 minutes and then go “oh yeah I’m not allowed to bet on these because I have a vote.”

Not that it’s some big scandal. It’s not like he can actually affect the outcome but still. Just so obvious that he definitely bets when he isn’t supposed to.

For example, whether you or anyone felt Jaylen Brown deserved MVP last year there was a concerted push to have him in the conversation. The second he was traded, the same talking heads(voting members) jumped onto the Celtics PR of him being a bad player.
