JJ Redick is asked by a reporter if he knows anything about the two-way player the Lakers just signed: “I know his name is Lawson Lovering… I found out 2 hours ago. So, I’m with you guys.”
Please tell me he has a middle name starting with A to make it L A L
Only cause I go to G League games I can tell you that he’s big and slow but tries hard.
If anyone ever accuses you of not knowing ball, you can say you knew more about a player than his NBA head coach.
Ha gotta thank Dad for buying season tickets to the Hustle
That’s a crazy middle name
Lawson “big and slow but tries hard” Lovering
It could be worse
Next Ryan kalkbrenner let’s work
So he hasn’t changed from when I watched him in college, cool
Lawson AJLawson Lovering
Lawson Lovering.
Law Son Love Ring
Bro’s got 4 words for a name.
What if it’s O, L O L
Lawson Analbumcover Lovering
Must be down bad to add Lovering. We decided to run with no centers instead of calling him back up
Lakers are already at that point this season with Looney. So at worst it’s a sidegrade.
Crazy that the “why are you here, the Lakers need a center” meme is like half a decade old and it’s still true
ill be damned if i let a celtics fan slander the goat kevon looney
unfortunately it’s not slander if it’s true :/
I was about to argue but I realized 2020 is going on 7 fucking years ago.
Meme is way older than 2020, people have been saying that ever since shaq left the team lol
we have a center in kessler, and a back up small ball center in Mamu. We just need a young developmental big in the mix as well
The Lakers system just doesn’t fit looney at all. He also might be a bit washed
I wonder if the NBA sometime in the future will implement an injury clause where you just don’t get paid for the games you miss, besides ACL and Achilles injuries. It’s so dumb that so much money goes to players who just aren’t there.
Lovering cut his shaggy hair and grew a goatee. So atleast he’ll look the part
Typical Pelinka move to come in with a position completely going off the rails. I’m praying he finally gets fired this summer
He could give up a bucket every possession and score nothing and he’s still an upgrade over Looney.
I used to call him Lawson Lumbering
He’s just so slow and unskilled
That description makes me think he must be about twice as fast as Looney.
If he can jump and catch lob, that’s more than enough for a placeholder backup big. Looney is moving like a 53 year old and giving and one’s to guards. It’s that bad
They really cant get enough of the memphis grizzlies leftovers
Pippen jr., Huff, Bufkin, Koloko….
Seems it’s a 2-way street.
How about we keep passing around the same 5-10 G League guys. We got a great cross training program in the works here
Half of those were hardship exceptions lol
Doesn’t matter. This is a professional sports league. If players can be useful to another team, why shouldn’t they pick them up? You don’t own them lol.
You’re coming off as bitter bro, be happy that your players can find success elsewhere. I’m happy for Scotty, he really seems to fit into Iisalo’s system. I look forward to his continued growth.
Hilarious that a FO doesn’t talk to a coach at all when getting players.
I mean, this is really dependent on how much they agree on needs and philosophy beforehand. This could be a problem, or it could be that there is trust and a shared plan about what they need and want in a player and so he doesn’t have to be involved in more minor player acquisitions until after because he trusts they’re going to bring in the kind of guy who will fit his coaching philosophy. It’s very funny but it’s not necessarily bad. If Jamahl Mosley were saying this about Joe Dumars having signed someone or Doug Christie was talking about someone Scott Perry had signed, it could raise some red flags but in an otherwise pretty well run organization this is probably fine.
Yea I think it’s a pretty simple concept of “we need a guard who can do x, y, and z” and then the FO mulls over candidates and finds someone.
He could also just be messing with the media. :)
I think this is a distinct possibility. Honestly he probably knows enough about him to start to plan to use him, but maybe he hasn’t spoken to him about how he’ll be used or just hasn’t read the full report or whatever so it’s easier to make a joke and move on.
Its a guy on a 2 way contract lol
Like he’s only being played when there is no one else to play, or Vanderbilt
Venderbilt is not really a center; at best he can be played situationally. All the new guy has to do is beat out Looney .
In fact , given that Looney and vande only get spot minutes, he might earn spot minutes even alongside them
e: Mamu will get some play at center but is not really a defensive center
I just wanted to make a “Vanderbilt will never play” joke
Looks like the dude is 7 feet tall, and played two games for Memphis last year in which he was serviceable.
There are worse two way players.
Not saying he’s bad. Just that signing a player without consulting the coach is silly. Mark Cuban used to always do that to Carlisle and created friction with the players he didn’t like playing.
Major trade for a star? Sure discuss it with everyone. Taking a flyer on an end of the bench guy with a 2 way? There’s really no need to involve the coach with that especially if the coach doesn’t know anything about the player.
And hey, at least they told Redick that he was coming! I remember one time, the Pirates needed a last-minute short-term injury replacement, so they called up a dude named Ray Sadler from AA. He had to jump in the car in whatever he was wearing and drive from Trenton to Philadelphia, to make his flight to Arizona, because the team was on the road. Nobody told the manager Lloyd McClendon that he was coming, and when he showed up in the clubhouse all scruffy and in work boots, McClendon mistook him for a construction worker.
(Sadler went 2-for-8 with a home run over the course of three games, and never played in the majors again.)
Nico Harrison has joined the chat.
Idk, maybe if the front office is completely obsessed with a player I get them doing this. But I assume it’s hard to find major differences in ability between a lot of these g-league guys, so wouldn’t you want to get someone that your coach would actually use? I’d imagine presenting a short overview of a few players’ role and strengths would allow a coach to pick a guy that he might give minutes to
Surely you do it the other way coach goes I want a backup/depth player that does x,y,z then the team goes and finds who they think fits the criteria best
They have scouts. The scouts are in communication with the coaching staff and front office. You really think multibillion dollar franchises haven’t figured this out?
What do you want jj to add? He literally doesnt even know who the guy was. Lol thats why you have scouts
i imagine JJ has enough demands on his time to have to watch some tape of some g-leaguer.
Coach: I need a back up center.
Front office: bet.
Front office: Best we can do is not a backup center. Here you go
lol.
It’s not the coach’s job to GM. And when it was all of those teams failed miserably. They know what he wants on the team and this guy probably fits the need that they’re looking for. It’s a player that is a two-way so it’s someone that is looking to prove themselves. It’s not like JJ is going to be running plays for them. It’s the player’s job to try to fit into the system and fit a role to make the team notice them.
But when it was the GMs job to coach it worked out. Shout out our man greg pop
It’s one thing to go from one to the other and it’s another thing to be like Stan Van Gundy or Doc Rivers and try to do both jobs at the same time.
Steve Kerr was GM before; he took a break as analyst and came back as coach.
I suspect he is a better coach than GM.
Pat Riley went up the coaching ladder to front office, but came back to win a ring in Miami
There are a few ithers who had dual roles. ..Ainge, Elgin, maybe Don Nelson all did something like Pat, in temporarily stepping back. But without the same success.
Have you seen Moneyball? I imagine it’s somewhat accurate
Two summers ago in SL, Lawson Lovering missed both free throws by first missing off the backboard and then air balling. I’ll always remember his name for that.
2 way lovering is a playa
I googled him, he seems to fit right in.
❄️
I went to CU when Lovering played there and there were a few times on campus I’d see him riding around his electric scooter. I swear the handle bars didn’t even come up to his knees, it looked so goofy
Let’s just run with Vando as the backup man.
Yeah I just watched this guy’s highlight and it seems clear as day he doesn’t belong in the league
I know the Lakers are desperate for bigs, but holy crap. This is like seeing your friend start dating a borderline homeless dude after her divorce because he’s available and she thinks that because she turned 30 that’s all she can get
Who else can we get? We have no roster spots, so two way bigs is our only option until we get near February where roster cuts are less costly
He’s wrong, new team mate name is McLovin
Shohei Ohtani
First a Slawson, and now a Lawson Lovering.
These names tho
More Grizzlies scraps
The Lakers have also had a handful of former players picked up by MEM, notably Pippen Jr, Huff, and Koloko.
I wonder where is Pippen Jr nowadays, he showed some flashes
House GrizzKers
You would think they are doing it on purpose at this point
Scrubs.
he just like us
why not Love-ring? why lo-ve-ring?
Why is this news
lakers
I forgot that the Lakers aren’t allowed to be discussed in the NBA subreddit. We’re only allowed to talk about the teams nobody gives a shit about.
Carry on.
They downvoted Jesus because he told them the truth
Is it? Genuinely asking
Or maybe he’s just joking around…?
This is 15 second clip how are yall making such rock solid conclusions 😂
JJ would have probably been told at some point that they may move Okereke off the two way for a big if someone looks promising, and he probably agreed it was fine. They may have even asked who his preference to drop was if it came to that, in which case Okereke was the obvious choice.
I love this move, Lovering wasn’t on my radar at all but having no big man 2 way prospects on a team in need of big men was silly.
