[Lowlight] Darius Garland doesn’t get the ball off the starting tip-off because he was busy tying up his hair
The clippers commentary was hilarious during this. “Ty Lue actually prefers to lose the opening tip off”
Clippers using the PSG tactics I see
You know ball, literally the ball went around where they usually aim for on a soccer field lol
Except in soccer it goes into the opposing teams side to pin them deep
True my brain forgot to process that part haha
And France national team
I don’t think I’ve actually seen any studies done on the opening tip, which suggest it doesn’t matter. I know deferring in football is now a trend. But I can’t really see this mattering in any way shape or form for an NBA game.
I vaguely remember seeing an analysis on Reddit showing a correlation between winning the tip and winning the game. However that could be mostly because better bigger athletes tend to win the tip, and better bigger athletes also help you win the game
This can also make sense because the team more likely to win the opening tip would also be more likely to win the OT tip. And winning the OT tip is certainly an advantage to some degree. But I’m pretty sure I have never seen a team sub in a tall backup guy just to get the OT tip. Every time I watch an OT game, it’s always the typical guys in the lineup. So presumably winning even the OT tip is not enough of an advantage that teams try to go for it. Much less the opening tip.
It’s been studied. The opening tip winner wins 52.8% of the time. It’s not a big disparity like white vs black in chess, but it’s always a little more than 50.
Actually if winning the tip automatically sways your odds by 4.6% (52.8% vs 47.2% as opposed to 50⁄50) that’s actually a huge advantage and one that presumably some analytics team would’ve picked up by now and really prioritize winning the tip. I googled that research and just in terms of public report, nothing to suggest that they stripped out external factors like quality of the teams involved, players involved, etc. As in, suppose the teams that were winning tips were also the better centers in the NBA. What would be swaying the results isn’t the winning the tip, but rather having a quality center that’s very tall and athletic. And that they just happen to also win a lot of tip balls.
Looking at the all time jump ball list you have a pretty wide range of talent. All timers Shaq and Ewing are on there, some regular solid centers like Steven Adams and Drummond. Random guys like Koufos. Not sure center talent always equates to jump ball winning but maybe the legends who are also on winning teams skew it.
Now adjust that for height so we can see if it’s the result of having bigger centers winning more games, or winning the tip.
Causation vs correlation though
Maybe, probably. You get the ball first in the 4th quarter which can matter tough.
Considering how many thousands of games they have the data for, it’s not nothing.
Over 1200 entries a year though and that starts to add up to a lot of statistical significance.
Would be interesting to see the data, but without that data I would assume there is a very slight benefit to winning it. Just cause you’ll start the 4th quarter with the ball and late possessions matter more, because you have more of a sense of the best course of action. Because generally you want to play fast if you’re down and play slow if you’re up. It may also be a slight morale/confidence boost, at least for the big man who wins it.
But I can’t imagine it changing the odds of winning more than the tiniest fraction of a percent.
Well if both teams shoot 100% and only threes with no fouls and the same time between them then the one who gets the tipoff will win
Well in that situation you’d have the OT tip. And I’m pretty sure whoever wins the OT tip does have a slight edge in winning. But in regulation that hypothetically scenario would lead to a tie.
No that depends on the time in which each team is scoring. If it’s an odd number of time that it takes then the team shooting first would have the last goal with the other team not having enough time to make there next
Why? The team who loses the tip gets the possession first in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.
Clippers broadcast is actually pretty good. They were enjoyable the entire game.
i was at the game, was it fratello or jim jackson on the color?
It was Jim, we have had the Czar yet this season afaik
oh ok cause i saw fratello hanging around in the corner across from the clipper bench when the game was about to finish
clippers commentary crew is actually pretty underrated
I think Biran Sieman is an elite broadcaster. He’s really great. I think Jim Jackson is great with him too, but I think Sieman is standout
One of the few bright spots for the clippers right now lol.
Clippers actually have one of the best commentating teams in the NBA. I never thought they could adequately replace Ralph Lawler, but somehow they did it.
Am I stupid or was that ball far as fuck regardless of what Garland’s doing
It wasn’t right to him, but he probably would have gotten it if his hands were free and he was ready to run.
Maybe, but even then I think it would have been a dive into the stands and throw the ball out situation. Look at how close it was to the boundary on the first bounce, by time he got in range it would have been going out of bounds already
He makes it right to the assistant coach as the assistant coach catches it. The point of the first bounce is misleading because everything after that is what gives him so much time to catch up. I think it was a pretty trivial save if he was focused. With that said it doesnt matter at all
It was indeed
It was far, but an NBA player with both of his hands and who’s paying attention is getting that ball. Ultimately it doesn’t matter lol but the visual of him shuffling after it while tying his hair is hilarious.
Ppl downvoting are showing how unathletic they are and how little this sub knows about actual athletes. Garland gets that easily if he’s not tying his hair up lol. He was almost there even with half assing it while focused on tying his hair
I dunno, I’ve spent a good amount of time on a basketball court and that is not an easy grab. The thing about moving faster is that you need to stop or go crashing into the sideline. The ball doesn’t look like it is moving fast because of the angle, but it literally bounces once before going out of bounds.
I was coaching yesterday and I wouldn’t want one of my players jumping into the stands for a tipoff.
All that being said, having a wardrobe issue at tipoff is not a great look.
Edit: I watched it again. No way.
Imagine you are standing under the basket and someone throws a bounce pass from the top of the three to the corner. Nba guys struggle to close out that shot on D, forget about them catching the pass.
Idk dude that thing shot right off. He’s jogging over but he’s not even close. He’d have to lunch at the sideline for it and it’s the tip it’s not that deep. I get you slow fucks though think that running full speed is something fast folks just do though.
Hed likely have to jump into the stands so not worth risking an injury on a coin toss possession. Just let it go and act like the other team won the tip off.
Yeah it was nowhere near him, this was just an excuse to make a weird, veiled post
Nothing about this post is weird lmao, is it a stretch? Maybe, but it’s funny.
Personally I think the headline was overblown. The ball was pretty far. This is a nothing burger
Veiled in what way
It’s just funny to see an athlete so preoccupied with his hair that he lost the ball. What do you think the veiled thing is, calling him gay? You’re the one making it weird
You’re gay!
Stupid sexy garland
He didn’t lose the ball, he was never making that even if he was fully focused on getting it
I think there’s defo a chance
MrCuckCuck loves to put his own narratives out there
Yeah, I was thing out went straight to him.
Good point, he’d be diving into the first row for no reason.
Not stupid, people are just desperate to clown players for anything on this sub.
it truly is funny to see how miserable people here are
Ya no shot he gets to that regardless without demolishing those people courtside
He was slow to react and had his hands full. So ye . His fault
Also if he was ready to play he would at least try to grt the ball, but now he was out of the game…
I mean it doesn’t really matter
How does the rule work, because of this play, is it scored as the Lakers winning the tip so it’s LAL to start Q1/Q4, and LAC to start Q2/Q3, right?
Or did this actually cost the Clippers a possession?
It looks like they just gave the opening tip to the Lakers so it ended being a nothing burger. Obviously if this was OT or a jump ball situation, it would’ve mattered. But as is, the play made zero difference on the game itself.
I prefer games start with a coin flip.
Jump balls in general are dumb, it’s all about who is taller. It’s not some spectacle, it is antiquated and not fair. They should all be possession arrows.
So nobody in here going to acknowledge how far away that ball got tipped? Even without tying his hair, it looks like DG would have had to dive to get that one.
yeah it didn’t look like to me that all the blame should be on DG for that, ball was already going out
Shit was one bounce and out lmao
idk why he always waits till the very last second to tie his hair up
He’s been doing this for years - not that he could have gotten to this ball anyway lol
Sounds like a ritual
Tbf, he wouldn’t have gotten that even if he wasn’t tying his hair, not like he wasn’t looking either. Look at where the ball landed, very close to the sideline.
Clippers and Chargers should merge
Bruh. Let go of your hair, get the ball and put it up at the next stoppage
Pause
What in the world are you pausing here?
Bruh you can’t talk about dn like that without a pause
What?
I don’t wanna know what they’re doing there in Indiana!!
that was a really bad tip regardless where was he tryna send it lol
My man had time during warmups plus the 15 minutes past the start time to do this
Priorities.
This the type of shit that happens in your rec league✌️
Shaqtin nominee 🤣
our last year of shaqtin a fool
Was there even Shaqtin last year? I don’t remember seeing a single one online
That was a bad tip, he was never getting that ball regardless of what he was doing.
He absolutely could have gotten that
You’re right that he could have gotten to it but the tip was awful and it could have still happened the same way regardless of the hair.
If this happened in the WNBA, you would hear about it until the end of time.
I don’t think he would have gotten it even if he was ready for it
Vando reaction 😂😂😂
This play was dedicated to Steve Ballmer.
We’re allowed to just laugh at this, holy crap so many soft comments
you could make a whole lowlight reel of his off ball defense
Commentators oblivious
He wasn’t getting that regardless
Genuine question, isn’t the ref supposed to wait until both players are ready?
wtf was he doing
Bruhhh
I hated having this guy on my fantasy team some years back.
