I really don’t see McAfee doing NBA stuff. He’s a football guy. I know many here dislike him, but I enjoy Pat’s show and there’s not much NBA talk especially when the NFL and College Football are in season. I think I hear more about baseball, hockey and WWE than basketball on his show.
The only ESPN personality I can think of who could manage to fill Ernie’s shoes & keep the show rolling is Scott Van Pelt, but Inside would either have to move to D.C. to accommodate his hour of SportsCenter, or he’d have to commute to Atlanta whenever the NBA is on ESPN, & I just can’t see that happening.
I’m not saying it’s their fault, but the fact that he chose to specifically point out that he’ll continue to do stuff with TNT and CBS, like actually mention them by name in his “retiring” statement, says a lot.

Studio lighting, pre-air make-up checks, well dressed clothing, good camera angels, etc. Skin and hair are the “oldest” looking features to any body and all those steps do a lot to hide aging from them on camera.
Though there’s still plenty non celebrity/rich 70yo’s I know in my own day to day that still move around a lot and work labor intensive jobs with no fancy morning rituals of face creams and what not, who you’d probably never guess were in their 70s already.

It’s hard to imagine a multi-billion dollar league outright dying and going under, but I will say I think the NBA is giving less and less reason for new fans to sign on to the experience. Why would anyone decide to watch a league where the players don’t play, the media is garbage, and the all signs point to the league being in bed with gambling?

Ernie is an all timer. He was the perfect host for inside the nba.
The crazy part to me is back in the early days, when there wasn’t even an Inside the NBA, there was just some TNT studio show and Ernie kinda was another talking head. It was a bit budget and same-y with other NBA shows - I remember Bob Costas had a way bigger presence back then. Kenny joined, and then a couple years later Charles joined and there it was, lightning in a bottle. When Shaq joined, I thought it would ruin it, and it did in a way, but it also made it bigger and a new thing. What a run, what great work by Ernie for all these years.
Legend. A true steward of the game. Somehow even more legendary as a human.
If both him and Chuck are leaving after this season, may be time to just sunset the show.

Ernie is a true diamond in the rough of an ego-infested sports media world that continues to decay in quality and substance. An actual role model who truly embodies what it means to be a class act, and a balanced person when so many are fighting to be the loudest, edgiest, or most controversial.
Not like I know the man, but every time he speaks it just feels like he’s not putting on some kind of an act, but he actually feels authentic and worth listening to, and maybe even looking up to.
I am glad he is making this decision for himself and I am grateful for his steady presence in covering the sport I love so much over the years.
We love you so much, Ernie.
