You all were joking?

4 games in should not be considered a lock

At this rate he’s going to be the only NBA player

He made it through basically a full season with us so it is possible. And outside of a putrid playoff performance vs Indy he was pretty damn stellar.

65 games and maintain his level of play. Would be an all-time anomaly. It’s fun as a meme, but he probably wasn’t hardly featured on the gameplan for the first couple opponents he faced.

Memphis has 78 games left. We’ll see how Jerome looks at game ~40.

The solution is to reduce the number of games. Obviously the owners and players don’t want that because it reduces BRI but that’s basically the tradeoff.

There’s definitely rule changes that can be made to slow down the game. Changing rules on dribbling and gather moves so guys can’t make so many stop start moves. Not rewarding offensive players for barreling into dudes. Calling more illegal screens so it’s harder to force switches. Get rid of the corner 3 so guys don’t have to close out like that.

Adam Silver’s entire tenure has been we’ve tried nothing and we’re all out of ideas.

You are basically saying it’s because these guys are playing basketball at the highest level.

At minimum we need to remove back to backs

Hali was hurt playing Milwaukee on the 2nd night of a b2b

Bring back hand-checking, slow the pace down.

Yup. The game speed and constant movement/switching all game. It’s ridiculous and I’m surprised they keep pushing this pace.

The players union should be involved in this style of play stuff as it’s a workers issue

The refs also consistently allow opposing teams to be aggressive with some players while consistently swallowing the whistle. No wonder players are getting hurt. Opposing teams know who they can always foul without getting called.

actually they should call more fouls which stops the game

As somebody who follows both sports religiously, I’ve always felt that basketball was about 7-8 years behind soccer in terms of tactics, and this period of ball we’re in now feels like soccer when Klopp and Pochettino popularized a very high intensity high pressing style of play that resulted in great results that influenced how everybody played, but also led to a ton of injuries.

I’m not sure this is something Adam Silver can fix.

He could enact rule changes that slow down the game. Make them play on sand. Make it so they can’t run with the ball and have to only pass. Ban jumping.

I read an article a while back on this; since the NBA and NFL are currently both having issues of excessive hamstring injuries they’re doing a lot of charting, and one of the things they found was that it wasn’t necessarily number of games as much as it is ramp up time. Going from the off season or rehab to 35 minutes of maximum exertion is killer.

I think teams will just lower the minutes of their best players and use more players. Individual stats will go down, but that’s better than getting injured. It will be more like Euroleague, where it’s more about the team, than just one or two superstars.

That’s not accounting for youth and travel basketball causing regular, intense strain on the bodies of growing teenagers. There’s an element of wear-and-tear from a lifetime of playing high level basketball.

Yes. This is the real issue. Strategically everyone figured out the best choice offensively is to play fast with non stop movement. The best choice defensively is full court pressure on the primary ball handler to slow offenses down. And since everybody can shoot 3s you have to sprint across the court for close outs. Hopefully these few seasons are just flukes but I tend to agree the issue is the human body can’t handle the ideal way to play long term.

Such a great point like every aspect of the game has to be taken advantage of. Made basket inbound the ball asap and push the ball up quick. Shot is put up corner crashers for the o board then the defensive players have to find a body and boxout.

Then why does this not occur in soccer? Arguably more fast paced and far more volume

Easy fix — eliminate the 3pt shot!

Reduce the number of games and/or spread them out more. Taking the first round back to 5 games (or just lessening the number of playoff teams in general to reduce the number of rounds) would go a long way, too. It wouldn’t end all injuries of course, but it would mitigate a lot of the damage.

But that won’t happen, because you’ll never convince the league’s TV partners to pay the same amount of money for less inventory, which means less money from the TV partners, and you’ll never convince the owners to take less money.

Crazy bc lebron said this in an interview and the general fanbase (this reddit included) clowned him for talking up his era

“it’s 100%”

how tf do you know

We can have this WHILE not allowing travels, carries, illegal screens which further pushes offenses into hyperdrive

This is something Adam Silver can fix by changing the rules that will artificially slow down the game.

These rule changes won’t make the game better or more fun to watch though, they will just be there to make sure these guys drop dead at a lower rate.

Market has proven that all they want to see is high pace high scoring offensive showdowns, but I think this pushed the players’ activities into an unsustainable level.

The first one I can think of, is the 14 seconds rule on offensive rebounds.

Fixing the dribble rules goes a long way in terms of making movements healthier, slower, and less erratic

The players don’t want reduced games because that reduces BRI. Why do people keep brining this up as if it’s only the commish who decides this?

Is it really the reason 5 games in ?

Less games means less money . Who do you think WANTS less money ?

He can’t reduce games. Players and owners would go into a meltdown. It would financially hurt them all, plus players wanna play. Spreading them out would mean less of an off season for players, which wouldn’t go down well either. The latter could be enforced through CBA negotiations maybe, but the former is never happening

But the seasons just started

scrib doon

I agree with you but pacers rotation has historically been pretty deep. I’m not sure it’s a full solve although there will always be injuries in an explosive sport

Because we’re 4 games in and have seen so many huge injuries… you can’t really blame rotations in 4 games.

No bro- don’t make sense here. We will have none of that.

Reason 2, no hair.

The ball throwing has something to do with it I’m sure

Linebacker with T-Rex arms build too OP

Des is a dawg. He’s got a bad back but powers through it.

can he stop sucking then, I need him to not shoot bricks

If anything this means he’s the least likely to be healthy come April lmao

This is what was being said about Donte Divencenzo before he blew out his achilles in the playoffs. I fear nobody is safe.

And the magic were still ass that’s crazy lmaoo

I don’t think it can be a player 29 other teams don’t respect

If Mikal even misses like 4 games due to a minor injury my brain will implode

No, they said best healthiest player, not just healthiest.

You joke butt

Dick is solid man it wouldn’t surprised me to see him erect at the end of the season for sure

Jakobe walter vs Gradey Dick final book it.

He will get hurt in November

He gunning for Mikal’s spot

Arthritis be damned

Sciatica aside

Til’ he’s 90.

LeBron James? The Lakers benchwarmer?

We get LeBron and friends in the playoffs for the gazillionth time

More evidence for the Ty Jerome mvp case

I think that’s a good bet.

Zubac got injured by Oubre contesting him on an uncontested rebound and landing under him. It’s not like the other injuries at all - this one was a freak accident with a player being really, really stupid

Just a classic rolled ankle. Less worried about him.

We have 3 guys with hamstring issues right now… out of our top 7 players. That’s not counting zu ankle issue. Pacers are probably cooked this year

Plus whatever the fuck is happening with Tingus Pingus

Kon Knueppel (Hamstring)Coby White (Calf)

Me (balls itch)

Tell me more about Kesha’s Johnson.

Don’t forget: Joel Embiid (at some point)

You forgot Kristaps Porziņģis (AIDS)

When the eff did Chet and Ajay Mitchell get hurt?! Half the OKC roster straight up dropped overnight…like literally 😭

I mean Isaiah Joe landed hard on his ass lol I think we know what happened there

Terry Rozier (gambling)

Several on the Hornets too -Kon Knueppel (Hamstring)Grant Williams (Hamstring)Coby White (Calf)

yeah i just mentioned the notable players, theres even more

Butler isn’t from this season

Justin Champagnie broke his foot vs charlotte a couple nights ago 🫩

Keegan Murray (ankle)

What’s going on with Kesha now?

Sengun is missing a few games due to back issues.

injury designation should just be: Kawhi Leonard (Kawhi Leonard)

Could say the same about a Magic player too.

Injury bingo card center square

Surprised he didnt list Ben Simmons as well

Tbf kawhi had a early season injury last year and then went on to play most of the rest of the season at a very high level

(I’m contractually obligated to defend kawhi and cope now that he’s back the raps)

Caruso is supposedly just an ankle sprain. It’s not supposed to be long term. Please notice my extensive use of suppose.

He’s a basketball player, Ben Simmons?

I think he’s not counting guys out for the season. Ariel Hukporti isn’t there either.

The saddest injury of them all.

dudes are just playing such elite basketball that their bodies can’t keep up ngl

Like what? Stop running g so hard!!!

this is the full list i think of players out

While a few of these guys are on the same team if you average out this list of 10 across the league it means ¹⁄₃ of the league has already lost someone to injury after the first week of the season. If you add the other 8 guys that are also hurt that someone commented below it goes up to over ¹⁄₂. That doesn’t seem sustainable to me.

Yeah Jdub for instance got sandwitched between two dudes while going up for a dunk and fell on his ankle

Pace and 82 games makes players injury-prone

There are more injury prone players in the league now because of things like players being too big and strong and specializing in sports from too early of a young age.

The Knicks won a championship and now the whole timeline is fucked

We are approaching the maximum point in terms of how big, fast and strong the human body is capable of being. The players’ tendons are being pushed beyond their limits and so…kaboom.

Giant humans are flying around on a hard court, putting in max effort constantly, and stopping repeatedly on a dime. The parts we humans are made of are clearly not made for it.

It reminds me of how turf fields are more dangerous than grass partly because it grips so hard and immediately. I almost think they need to “de-tune” basketball shoes at this level to take impact stress off of player bodies.

I like the theory that all the players are taking time off for GTA 6

Idk but I’m quarantining Wemby

Same shit that happens every season lately. Players are run into the ground nowadays before they even hit the NBA.

Players rushing back

this guy has a history of hamstring injuries

If the Kings win we know we’re in the darkest timeline.

Y’all wanted playoff vibes in the early season and then complain about playoff vibe injuries Early in the season every year.

People have been sounding the alarm on AAU ruining these guys’ bodies for years, maybe we’ve reached the point where the majority of these guys grew up in that system

Rui is out tonight lol

Nah, Ty Jerome buddy

this curse brought to you by KALSHI

Well that’s because it’s getting worse and worse

Yup. Playing an explosive game while out for a long period. It takes time to ramp up to pre-injury levels. It’s a bummer, but this isnt too surprising tbf.

No freak out instead

yeah first thing i thought was overcompensation somehow

I’m not a doctor, but isn’t it sort of commonplace for someone coming back from an injury on one leg to come back to playing and injure their other leg / hammy shortly thereafter, from overcompensating on the healthy leg a bit?

man i’m tweakin how could i😭

All NBA injured means they’ll Eventually come back but JDub is dead.

That one was gruesome

J. Dub doesn’t start over Ant or the Haliban.

Thats a freak injury, not related to these other guys injuries at all.

Could have happened to anyone.

Who?

It’s been four games. They have plenty of time to get hurt. 🫠

And we might as well reset everyone’s season record while we’re at it, it’ll only be fair

yup leagues are so talented you damn near strained your self thin before even making it to college

More possessions too. Over the entire season, there are like 8 more games worth of possessions than there was 15 years ago. Plus each possession now requires way more running and cutting than it did back then.

Like baseball and pitcher injuries uptick when analysts pushed spin rate

you can strengthen muscles but you can’t strengthen joints and ligaments. Tendons are a weird middle ground

We can push our bodies further and further in terms of athleticism with training science but we have no methods for significantly strengthening tendons and joints to deal with the increased demands we place on them.

NBA athletes already have an insane amount of wear and tear before they even get to the league. The AAU circuits and youth basketball are honestly ridiculous and there has been no corresponding increase in emphasis on longevity and health while the wear and tear on athletes bodies has only been increasing both in duration and physicality.

Are we opposed to peds ? I think we should let these athletes take peds

Yup, probably not a ton of Tennis fans in this sub but the ATP tour is just one injury after another.

In that case, Wilt would’ve never made it to his 5th season

Finally someone who’s actually paying attention

No wonder I’ve never strained a hamstring

Hali is newly married and probably has a wonderful honeymoon, so this checks out

Explains with Ant

Remember when Harden strained his hamstring on the first play of the game versus the bucks when he was a Net.He definitely strained it the night before and used that as a cover.

Then why’d Steph and Lebron do so well in the Olympics despite clearly fucking each other every night?

im not upvoting this. i want it to stay at 69 upvotes. but yes. agree.

This is sarcasm right lool

I think it’s the opposite man. Sex has regenerative and fortifying powers, and the players used to fuck more. Gen Z has the least sex

Makes sense that most players in the top 5 aren’t Us players

But then that means they gotta work all year round while they make their millions and that’s not fair >:(

overcompensation from his weakened side perhaps?

Will the league let everyone else take roids like LeBron..

Who the hell watches an NBA game and thinks they don’t use PEDs…

Seriously lol, outta your mind if you think today’s athlete’s aren’t juiced to their eyeballs.

Should the Sacramento Kings bomb every other team’s plane to trigger a championship by default?

thatsthejoke.jpeg

There’s a ton of people on this forum who just have it in their head that the root cause of injuries are AAU basketball, how many sports an athlete played when he was eight years old, the 82 game season, and pace of play. Some of this might be true to various degrees, but people will try to fit every injury into their pet theory.

Like the reason reason Kawhi gets injured isn’t because he played AAU, it’s that orthopedic surgeons now have the ability to squeeze 40 games a season out of a 35 year old who lost his knees a decade ago.

Several of the injuries so far are due to players just coming back from an injury/surgery recovery (or straight up continuing to play through injury), and jumping straight into intense regular season action.

That isn’t inherently related to the number of games or length of the season, but it might be mitigated a little bit by a longer off-season. Or players could just stop coming back as early as absolutely physically possible, and make sure they are actually fully recovered and gradually work back up to NBA game intensity.

The issue is that they keep enforcing by adding more travel rules that eliminate the travel making it faster. They should be a lot more strict with travels and screens

The answer is to slow the game down by mandating heavier shoes

I don’t think it’s a function of the game, I think it’s a function of the youth development and cumulative load on players. They’re all specializing in one sport and playing year round basketball from an early age nowadays. They don’t get the developmental cross training that kids used to get by playing all of football, basketball, and baseball. So their bodies are hyper tuned for the sport of basketball, but much more fragile when a non-standard basketball maneuver happens.

a big part is probably travel, that hurts your ability to recover, to be cramped up even in a jet and disturb sleep

best is to cluster the games so minimal travel and back to backs otherwise these guys play pick up all summer, they train at game speed, thats apart of the lifestyle

if you can be deliberate about recovery methods and traveling is a big hinderance that can at least add marginal benefits and that is something relatively more reachable than shortening the season or changing what is a a natural evolution to a very fastpaced sport.

The off ball movement is probably a big killer here, it sets up a lot of the most explosive plays and actions even for the on ball guys.

less people will watch, which also effects the bottom line

Yeah I feel like this is the piece that the people calling a shorter season a non-starter are missing. The NBA developing a reputation for star players being constantly injured and missing games could absolutely threaten long-term viewership and revenue.

How? Fewer games means less ticket revenue and lower valuations on broadcasting contracts. The NBA would never agree to a 60-40 revenue split or whatever huge discrepancy would be never to cover for the lost revenue. The players also make so much money now that their incentives to strike are absurdly low; this isn’t even to mention that a prolonged strike might not be enough to convince the NBA to surrender billions of dollars.

Lol

I have an idea, wouldn’t stars playing less minutes and young players playing more substantial minutes help develop young players and role players?

I think that’s why Derrick white and Prichard and many others became such good players on great team friendly deals because they got the opportunity to play.

Rest stars more, develop young players sounds like a win win scenario

Then they’d get locked out and make $0

The biggest of all, Ben Simmons.

Haliburton just missed a ton of time lol and these are a lot of young guys not older guys like you’d expect if this was accumulation of too many long hard seasons

Source: trust me bro. 😎

There are plenty of injury prone players who already don’t play back to backs and get rested on the regular who still miss games to injury. imo this runs a little deeper than just games played, like how they are being trained during to offseason or during the regular season.

That’s what training camp is for and many of these players workout over the summer. Ant and the Wolves have been going very hard in their workouts during the month of September. Apparently their workouts have been even tougher than the games. So for Ant at least, it’s not a ramp up issue

Gotta love ridiculous hyperbole when you got nothing to argue lol

For one literally every other sport has athletes sit out only for rest but two no other sport as physical as basketball makes their players play as many games as the NBA

The Pacers chose to play him 70+ mins in a B2B. Nobody made them do that.

if they’re not gonna reduce the season fine…but theres no reason to not just make the actual league year longer. Teams really shouldnt be playing more than 2-3x a week ever.

then dont play your stars 2 nights in a row, duh

NBA regular season is the most meaningless regular season in sports when over half the league makes playoffs and even more than that have a shot in the play in.

The only interesting part of the regular season is the mvp race which is a dumb media driven award that can be followed solely through box scores

I am completely in favor of shortening the regular season beyond just health of the players (even though this injury likely has nothing to do with season length obviously)

Just spread the games out a bit more.

Hali and Simmons just came back after a year of not playing basketball. If we are talking about joint wear then yes but this seems different

The MVP race no one saw coming, Kevin Durant vs Julius Randle and Demond Bane.

Lol Kings have 3 more players that aren’t listed and will be out for some time. Keegan Murray, Maxime Raynaud and Dylan Cardwell. They may stink, but are still part of the rotation.

Nets Warriors finals 😭😭😭😭😭

Our teams losing to Sacramento damn

Which notable player doesn’t have a history of injuries at this point?

How many NBA players are there without an injury history. Feel like these days more do than don’t

Don’t jinx it, Delete this now please

There’s some kind of dark magic going on right now where Joel is surviving scares that would normally result in catastrophic injury, and then 24 hours later one of our backups gets taken out instead.

Legitimately every backup C or PF on this team is either injured, or just got back from injury.

Somehow, Embiid returned

And Zion

The last of the Mohicans

More surprised at Zion still being healthy.

It’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make

Damnn now tomorrow he’s gonna break his hand thanks to you

And my Axe! (Shaedon Sharpe)

2nd MVP just like we all predicted

Damn I never knew about that. Just googled it wtf

Wow… dude loves the game

Damn. Harts one of my favorite players. ⁹⁄₁₁ type news

I had to look up how long “a while” would be. So far it’s just for tonight’s game, right?

But the pace is the same as it was in the 60s-80s

You don’t believe in wear and tear?
