It’s dumb confirmation bias too. People want to justify their draft rankings, and Boozer is still the much better long term prospect. He’s just not the better player right now.

This is skill in itself. Contributing to winning basketball even on a bad night.

More like carried by Ty Jerome.

Which is bullshit cause the ROY race has always been about highest PPG scored. Last years race was perfect example of that.

He was -9 in a win last game. Jokic would’ve been +8227

Probably because even his bad game he still has double digit rebounds and 5 assists.

If only 3 to 4 games have been played then 3 to 4 games isn’t a small sample, it’s the population

And Flagg had a ton of wins? Vs Kon?

They just didn’t want Yax to be #1.

+/- being the ONLY stat they look at for a 4 game sample size would make any real data analyst cringe .

Now I’m in favor of accounting for wins to play a factor in the award but since when did teams wins for ROY matter?

Flagg played better overall and was considered the favorite at the start. Flagg was better at everything besides 3 point shooting than Kon, and played elite defense, also was the #1 option while Kon was #2-3 option.

And hard to gameplan for a guy when he has Steph on the team. Especially one who gets to the rim at will

Yaxel’s insane. He moves like a SF and is bigger than our centers minus the myth of Tingus. Just an unbelievable player we got.

So the thing about yaxel is he has not settled for 1 mid range jumper yet. Literally every shot has been at the rim or a 3.

That’s how he played at Michigan too.

Just 2-3 years ago, he took a lot of jumpers from the midrange at UAB and almost no 3s. He basically played completely the opposite way just 2-3 years ago.

To show you how “coachable” he is, he got to Michigan and Dusty May showed him analytics, and like 90 percent of his attempts were at the rim or from 3, which help win a championship. And now he’s just doing that in the NBA.

That’s an underrated part because a player like Paolo Banchero, you could beg him on your knees for him to stop taking midrange jumpers that are inefficient and play more to his strength (he’s just as strong as Yaxel and plays similarly) but he just won’t do it.

The game plan to stop bully ball in the paint would be to dedicate more people into the paint and build a wall but there’s chef Curry and if you leave the perimeter open then you’re going to get cooked. Really need a 3/d wing to replace gui so yaxel can focus on offense.

The warriors aren’t winning because of the lack of play from yaxel tho. The warriors were a curry lay up and dumb foul away from beating the grizz

But it’s ROTY. Not MVP.

I’m reluctant to have him even Top 5, just because the other players are being thrown into much bigger roles which I know comes with more mistakes and inefficiency…. and it’s been 3 games lol.

Also, I just have 0 idea how to assess the Clippers overall minus the fact that they’re turnover machines. Like people are surprised by them, because we’ve competed with you and the Thunder… but that also came with BroLo being a god, which isn’t sustainable. So idk how much of everything is a fluke or not.

Gives Wagler a teammate that replicates his college bigs.

Yup, Boozer + Jerome: +28.8 net, Boozer on Jerome off: -29.1, Jerome on Boozer off: +5

Last year’s rookie ladder (which is just one dude’s opinion) had Kon in first at the end of the year and for much of the spring.

And the author voted for Kon for ROTY.

Flagg wasn’t #1 in the Kia Rookie lists until December when his play caught up.

He was the RotY odds favorite, but season end award betting odds are obviously not going to just be whoever played best for the first few games, weeks.

Yaxel is on a way more marketable team

This is a crazy take on last season

Who gives af abt wins they’re all rookies.

Yaxel didn’t have a dude next to him dropping 50 to carry him to wins. He is so obviously the best rookie and this ladder is stupid.

winning games has never been a priority for ROTY. otherwise, kon would’ve won over flagg and chet would’ve won over wemby

Come on dude 🤦‍♂️ it’s not that black and white

He’s shooting it at an above Markelle Fultz level

Let’s see boozer hit a 3

Look I love Cam Boozer but my guy is shooting 30% from the field 😅

But that also means he missed out on some key developmental years. I think people make the assumption that the developmental curve gets pushed back if you didn’t start playing until later in life but is there evidence supporting that?

but did he every play pickup before organized?! kidding… boozer is growing though the process and will get better, but yaxel has looked better so far. Still too early to tell anything really. I just want the rookies vs sophomores game back all star weekend to see them all play together

I’m rooting for the kid, but people were saying the same thing about Festus when we drafted him. I think the overall numbers just don’t favor older rookies in terms of ceiling. Fingers crossed he develops similar to siakham who I think was an older rookie who started later too

This is an inaccurate factoid that keeps getting repeated.

Yaxel played organized basketball throughout his childhood, but then halfway thru his freshman season of high school he was kicked off the team for academics, only becoming eligible the last third of his senior season.

He otherwise was pretty much born with a basketball in his hands. His dad played pro ball in the Dominican Republic and for their national team alongside Tito Horford, and his mom played collegiately in Puerto Rico and for the DR national team as well (including while three months pregnant with Yaxel).

Last year i would expect Boozer to be the most efficient rookie based on data and attributes he has in college. Clearly im so wrong, as of now.

He’s certainly far ahead in age

Then Chet should have won ROTY over Wemby (Chet should not have won rookie of the year over Wemby)

If wins mattered in the ROTY award, we’d have some very different winners

The Grizzlies have Ty Jerome leading the league in scoring

Normally wins don’t count much for ROTY versus individual stats but this year could be different.

MF team wins never factored in ROTY, Wemby won unanimously when the spurs went 22-60

Right now, Boozer actually has the worst expected field goal delta in the NBA. It’s a fairly new stat, but basically it’s trying to compare the expected FG% of the shots being taken due to shot quality against their actual FG%. The NBA expects Boozer to have a 48% FG% based on shot quality, but he’s at 28% from the field. That’s a difference of -20%, the worst in the NBA right now.

You’re right that other rookies aren’t efficient, as it’s normal for rookies to be inefficient. But Boozer’s on a different level. Guy is 6’8” and built like a Greek statue, not 6’2” and skinny. Why is he struggling so much to score inside?

I know, just being unserious man

We did have Jeremi and Dion was always fun…

I’ll be ecstatic if he’s better than the higher pick that we traded away.
