Nikola Jokic in 2021, asked about if the boos from Heat fans bothered him “I played in Serbia, brother. I played in Serbia, so. I wish you guys could feel that”

there’s a big difference between being booed by opponents and by your own fans lol
In Europe we also boo our own players
not the first game of the season and way more rarely than that
Lol you don’t watch European sports it sounds like…
football doesn’t count
Not really. Unless there is some big off court issue. We boo coaches and other staff. Players never.
In football (“soccer”) players are booed all the time by their own fans
Yeah but it’s not football, different cultures for different sports. Football fans are far more inflammatory and annoying
Thats not even remotely true.
Not a single euro team would boo their players? find that hard to believe lol him and luka boast about how hard it is to play their 24⁄7
Last year Partizan fans booed their team after Željko resigned, it was called unprecented by media outlets.
I remember fans booing singular players, but booing the entire team is very, very uncommon.
They boast about how hard it is to play, cuz you have 20k ppl being so loud, that you can’t communicate on the court and the court shaking because of the vibration. Some crowds are also extremly hostile, throwing objects & being extremely insulting right into your face and I’m not talking about the “Westbrick” type of insult.
So what the hells his problem then lol
We dont boo our team like ever, we boo specific players and never because of his performance and rather for something off court.
ok but its different when youve dedicated your entire career to some ungrateful city and then they boo you when you can easily have left to a better situation
hes done more for the nuggets than any player has in decades
And that team doesn’t exist without fans there to pay for them. After Jokic’s playoff performance last year, they wait a whole offseason and watch the team play like shit after already getting blown out by OKC on the road—no wonder they booed
easy to say from mothers basement
Not really. Most supporters don’t boo their own team. You try to support them and breathe a fire with your energy as a fan.
We absolutely do boo our own players if they don’t run or play well.
Show me an example. Which team’s fans boo their own team in Europe?
We do, come on now. I think doing it when 3 games into the season is weird, but I still feel it’s a bit out of character for Jokic specifically to speak up on this.
It would be weirder if Jokic and Co. hadn’t miserably shat the bed in the playoffs last year
As a fan you want the players/management to respect your team. If they don’t bring it, be sure as hell that they’re getting whistled on the court. No one is bigger than the team, most of the players are temporary.
True, and there is still a big difference
Y
Simply put, either play like your life depends on it, or gtfo… it’s a Europe thing
They’re lucky if it’s just getting booed. Sometimes they receive threats and get stuff thrown at them during the game.
again, not their own players
Bro what are you on about? Just an example from last year: https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/1pek9xc/in_an_unprecented_move_20000_partizan_belgrade/
There are plenty more
it literally says “unprecedented” plus it was not due to poor play from the players, but an off-court issue
…do you know what the word “unprecedented” means?
Its still not a common occurance, this and them booing the team a few weeks Virtus - basically for the same reason are the only times I remember this happening in recent years.
Feel free to provide “plenty more” links though.
Did he play for the Heat? I dont get it, he’s booed by Heat fans, not Nugget fans.
it’s obviously a post in reference to Jokić saying the fans that boo their own team aren’t real fans hence why
Ain’t no boos like the seriban boos ?
There is?
thank you for having common sense, i dont get how the OP thought that was comparable
100%. I agree with him. It’s lame to boo your own team.
Spoken like someone who didn’t have Miles Bridges added to their team.
Co-signed!
As someone from Serbia who has attendet these games, I must give a bit of context. Jokic never played for any of the two biggest clubs there (Partizan and Zvezda) with actual fan bases that fill up arenas and make atmospheres that their known for. The clips you might have seen are usually from derby games where the two clubs play each other or in Euroleague.
Meanwhile, Jokic played for Mega, a private club owned by his agent that doesn’t really have any title ambitions and exists mostly as a young talent factory. Games between Partizan/Zvezda and Mega never had that level of atmosphere, so I doubt Jokic ever felt those boos on the court.
Also, as others mentioned, getting booed by your own fans hits different. Unless something specific is happening (like an unpopular decision by the front office) the fans in Serbia never boo their own players and even show support when the team loses or plays bad. There are many instances where fans even stay at the end of games and chant to their players despite the loss to show support.
Booing your own players is really ugly and is definitely not something that should happen at any level and is probably why it hits Jokic the way it does coming from a country with a completely different basketball fan culture.
This guy Ballkans
Finally someone to put it nicely. Just a note the only time players get booed by their own fans are because of off court things never for performance.
It’s just not done. If you whistle at players during a football game you’re seen as toxic, you only show your discontent after a game.
Also, as others mentioned, getting booed by your own fans hits different. Unless something specific is happening (like an unpopular decision by the front office) the fans in Serbia never boo their own players and even show support when the team loses or plays bad.
So I’m not a fan of the Euroleague but I did hear about something recently that supports this. There was a legendary Euroleague coach, Željko Obradović, who resigned recently from Partizan because of issues with his players not listening; THOUSANDS of fans showed up at the airport to reject his resignation. And when the team played games, they would boo every time the problematic players would touch the ball.
Learning about the whole affair, I was pretty impressed by the passion of the fans ngl.
They booed the entire team and as far as I know it “only” happened during the first game after his resignition against Maccabi I think and some weeks later after they lost against Virtus, where the team played atrociously.
Željkos standing with Partizan and Pana fans is hard to fanthom for a coach, he is basically a saint to boath of the fandoms.
What you’re saying is true in principle. But both teams play a good chunk of their ABA games in Pionir/Aleksandar Nikolić wich is a small arena for 7-8k ppl with a really low roof and crazy acoustics, it gets crazy loud there when the games are heated or close. Its definitely lot more hostile then an NBA crowd, despite the small capacity.
Playing bad enough to get booed by your own fans is uglier than fans booing their own team.
Wow thank you I am so sick of these people saying “Ackshully Europe is MEAN and we LOVE TO BOO!!!”
He did have some games against partizan and zvezda in the Serbian and aba leagues.
He did but those games have pretty mild atmosphere compared to derby games and arenas are rarely full. The only hot game I can think of is the Serbian cup final between Zvezda and Mega when Jokic missed the game winning shot.
Plus, wars have been over for some time now. Aint like he was dodging mortars down the court.
This is nice perspective, thank you.
He’s been in this country for 12 years, played hundreds of games, won a championship and he knows we boo our players. We started this nation by booing the King and then it escalated. We boo all the time, players, owners, the coaches, halftime entertainers, politicians, journalists at rallies, police at clubs, comedians at clubs and once Santa Claus.
God bless Jokic, I hope the Denver fans listen to him but as a nation we’re not going to stop.
Bro this did not sound tough
Lmfao indeed it didn’t
Am I on r/nba or r/politics?
Is a list of things that happened political?
Genuinely fascinating — I think the vast majority of American NBA fans had gotten the wrong idea about this. Thanks for the insight!
We’re just ignoring his and his homophobic brothers open support of facism here I see.
OP thought he cooked lmao.
I cooked a pineapple pizza
Fans boo their team in the euros because the team isn’t playing with enough effort or intensity. It’s a big indictment to make your fans boo you over there. They boo in North America because the team is playing like ass, it’s just frustration with losing.
If Jokic isn’t trolling, then he doesn’t like it that fans would boo when the team plays like shit, cause they’re still playing hard.
The complaint about Jokic this season is that he has been playing with low effort
Not just this season playoffs too
Not for the whole season, but for that specific game he did. Both him and Jamal definitely deserved the boos that game (Jamal complained about them as well), even if they came back. Them crying about it is ridiculous.
No they don’t. You support even harder and try to breathe a fire into their game. No one boos in Europe, only for the opponent.
These Nuggets fans are a disgrace.
It’s nowhere near as common but it still happens. Panathinaikos booed their team off the floor early this year.
Sports are sports, if fans are frustrated they’ll boo, it isn’t that different.
The fans are a disgrace?
Not the players who were getting belted by the winless Pelicans?
They barely won by the skin of their teeth and then they put up another disgraceful performance vs the winless Warriors.
They should get bood twice as hard lmao. I’d rather boos than apathy
You’re part of the problem.
So he’s just soft? Wth does he even mean then
He’s soft as baby shit and just a horrible human being in general. His brother he supports is a domestic abuser. He supports a dictator, he openly says he will ignore fans who approach him. He promotes gambling in Serbia. His family in Serbia have a reputation for being bad people.
Source?
Source for what, everything is easily searched
Couldn’t find it
You’re getting down voted but his brothers are legit mentally underdeveloped oafs lol
yeah it’s one thing to be booed by the opposition.
it’s another to be the savior of the team for the last decade and be booed by the home crowd in one of the most delicate periods in recent team history.
The same fans were chanting his name before, after, and during the game. They were booing the team effort at the time. Being down 30 to the Pels in your home opener as a team with contending aspirations while also putting in lackluster effort every single possession will get any team booed. And for some reason he and Jamal took it personally, as if the fans didn’t have the best intentions possible.
And it worked because they woke TF up directly after it and had their only good quarter all season. Then the crowd cheered louder than ever when they pulled it out. It’s ridiculous to get upset at that and take it as a personal slight
I think people need to correct their thinking, they are booing because it made them feel better at that time. You don’t boo for the sake of other’s. By all mean, boo all you like, but don’t give bs like you guys did it for the team. The one putting the effort is your own team, the one who need your support is your own team.
This is like the parents who nagged and compare their childrens to others, and you think that would suddenly make them better? Those parents need to think first, have they support their kids enough? Oh no, I paid for your education, the best you could do is listen when I nag at you. Right, and people wonder why there are more young people getting into depression.
okay i really do believe this, and i can understand why people would think i’m being an idiot. i think that the effort put into regular season games is there to keep players from being injured early on in the season.
now if we see similar effort after 20 games, i get the cynicism. but right now the players are smartly warming up to a long season, and hopefully a long postseason.
Honestly, if it was game 15 fluke game instead of game 1 at home, the reaction from the crowd wouldn’t have been the same. It’s the home opener against a lottery team, the vibe going into the arena was very much “Will the Nugs win by 20 or 30?”
yeah that makes sense
If kobe steph other guys can get booed by homecrowd after multiple chips he definitely can to
it was this video that made me want to visit serbia and watch the two serb teams play each other. i finally made it on october 22, six days ago. thanks jokic!
Wasn’t that in 2023 in Finals vs. Heat series?
I think it was when they had that fight in a regular season game with the morris twin and the push
He never said that booing Nuggets fans bothered him.
Just told them dont come to a game
Funny thing about Miami fans, they, to my knowledge, originated the “ref you suck” chant in the early 2000s. Those fans got pushed out after Shaq came and even they didn’t compare to the crazies you see abroad.
Dude has always been a clown. Never liked him
Doesn’t really have anything to do with his recent statement , here we are talking about opposition fans booing you not your own. In Serbia your fans will boo you too yes but you need to be really really bad for that , Nuggets arent there ( yet ) and season just started .
He needs to be surrounded by capable shooters for floor spacing. They had the winning recipe but they abandoned it
Well thank you for sharing the news from 2021 i guess
This ain’t Serbia, mate - Jokic
But Nikola, I was yelling “Boo-urns!”
USA sports atmosphere vs European or South American is like kindergarden. For USA sport is entertainment and circus.
This thread is about a soft Euro crying because he got booed by his own fans once lmao
