If Anthony Edwards fails to qualify for awards by missing the 65-game threshold he will no longer be eligible to sign a supermax contract. Through the first four years, Minnesota would only be able to offer Edwards $10 million more than all 29 other teams in free agency.

With Minnesota: 5-year, $337.6 million ($67.5M AAV).With another team: 4-year, $250.3 million ($62.5M AAV).

Minnesota can offer Edwards a 5th year, but they no longer have a massive financial advantage when it comes to retaining him by being able to offer him nearly $100 million more than any other team.

His current deal goes to ²⁸⁄₂₉ - year 9.

All he needs to do is sign a 1 year extension at the 30% Max, and then he’s eligible for the 35% from ³⁰⁄₃₁ as a 10 year veteran.

The Supermax is not hugely relevant

(This the same reason Luka’s extension gives him a player option in ²⁸⁄₂₉ - so he can opt out and sign the 35% max instead)

5 years is a long time but goes fast in NBA. The Bucks were champions in 2021 and are lottery bound in 2026. Kings went from 2 seed to irrelevant in a year. If teams don’t make the right moves they are bound to fail much sooner rather than later.

This covers draft night trades where someone else drafts the player for you and trades them to you immediately, since technically that player wasn’t drafted by you (such as Kobe, Dirk, Luka, etc).

Pretty sure he can just sign like a 1 year extension and then be eligible for a 35% max once he gets to 10 years. I think that’s most likely especially if he’s missing half this season. Plus the cap is projected to go up so the 35% max will be a little more than it is now I would think. Obviously Minnesota doesn’t have to agree to an extension with him or sign him to 35% max if he becomes eligible we are some time away from that but if that’s what it takes to keep ant it’s worth it

This is simply not true. He will have two more chances to make the supermax criteria by making All-NBA: the 2027-28 and 2028-29 season. If he makes All-NBA in 2028-29 and has not signed an extension by then, he would be able to sign the 5-year supermax (35% max) by re-signing with Minnesota as a free agent. (Steph Curry is the only player to have ever done this.) Other teams would only be able to offer Edwards 4 years at the 30% max.
