I love to see him get to that spot and take a REALLY GOOD shot, as opposed to launching an off balance 3 that he didn’t need.
Absolutely awesome play
First thing I thought when I saw the replay (game literally ended during my drive home from work.) The man has the skill and size to more or less get any shot he wants and he settles for contested 3s so often. Seeing him win a game with THAT kind of shot really butters my eggroll
I beg your pardon?
I did not stutter
I too, choose this guys eggroll!
Great decision and shot selection by JT. My best bud and I were texting during the game and he immediately compared this shot to previous seasons. In the past, that’s def a fade away contested 3pt attempt. It’s still early, but I think JT may have taken his biggest situational awareness leap in a number of years. Looks like things have slown down for him
He said being injured last year really taught him a lot from the coaches perspective. I think we’re seeing some of that come true
I loved the way he went straight up. #1, it was just so stable and beautiful. But #2, for years I’ve been yelling at him that he’s too tall for the fadeaways and he just needs to elevate. I preferred Brown taking those shots over Tatum because Brown, with his freakish athleticism, would just elevate.
Seeing Tatum shoot from where he was rather than throwing himself away from the hoop has me really hopeful that maybe he’s made a conscious change.
Couldn’t agree more.
He’s too good, too athletically gifted, too smart, to settle for so many bad shots.
I loved how he looked tonight, and that decision at the end is EXACTLY what I want to see from him.
Brown never made those in the clutch
My biggest anger with Tatum in the clutch is he often goes for a 3 even when it’s to try for a buzzer beater and we just need 2.
I’m glad C fans are recognizing it too. He’s too reliant on the 3 ball because he’s tall and most defenders can’t really block it. But even if he shoots at 35% clip, it’s still not as effective because you don’t get to the freethrow line shooting jumpers. And it doesn’t get opponents get into foul trouble.
I mean, what is the scouting report on Tatum? Wouldn’t it be to let him shoot contested 3s?
Isn’t concerning to win at home on a overtime buzzer beater against, probably, the worst team in the league?
I had to follow the play by play on my phone how the hell did this game end up a) in ot ans b) the Celtics got the ball back
a.) Mikel Brown Jr. b.) Mikel Brown Jr.
MBJ giveth, MBJ taketh.
DAMMIT MICHAEL B JORDAN
Honestly after seeing some of the highlights good answers
And Mitchell Robinson missing 2 free throws to put the Celtics up 4.
And Tatum missing one as well.
He had a great game tho, that’s rookie shit it’ll work out
imo, the key moment is at the end of regulation Mitch is in for rebounding, and secures the rebound but is fouled. If he even makes one of two, it’s ballgame. But he misses both, which left the door open for Brooklyn. I suppose that’s the Mitch Robinson experience, though
The key moment was before that when Queta fouled out going for the rebound, which sent them to the line and they put Mitch in rather than Queta. Honestly, I thought Joe should have put one of the other bigs in along with Garza.
Teams need to start forcing the worst free throw shooters to shoot them underhand.
It’s so much more repeatable and easy.
After the signing I was saying that you just accept Robinson being terrible at FTs, and it is the coach’s job to never put him in at the end of games.
That sentiment lasted a couple months and died tonight. I have already seen enough. I don’t know how anyone could potentially cost his team a game the way he did tonight, and look so bad doing it, and walk away thinking that shooting FTs underhand would possibly make him look worse.
Wouldn’t have been in that situation without the foul call on queta
queta and joe being knuckleheads
Cause the analytical nerds convinced coaches that fouling when you’re up is a good thing.
Mikel Brown jr hit the shot to get them into OT but man, he took some terrible, just god awful shots to lose this game
Brain-dead layup attempt at the end there.
high pressure moments can make you do dumb shit. the second you get in your own head, you start losing your ability to execute.
thats why great players often come across as idiots. they are unburdened by thought in general, and therefore fundamentally do not experience self-doubt in the way the rest of us do. they experience none off the thoughts that can fuck you up
of course this doesnt make them idiots. the intelligence to be as great as they are is undeniable. rather, the inability to reflect on the sport and themselves the way we do is almost a pre-requisite to be the athletic geniuses they are
This is complete BS lmao wtf are you talking about 😂
Was in way over his head there completely blew it in OT
honestly randle had some bone headed choices too he should know better. and the celtics as well
brown is a rook he really does have an excuse i feel for him
Literal rookie mistake!
He trained with Fox in the off-season
all those 3s in and out were painful lol. and then missed a layup, and then went for a layup he shouldnt have gone for and missed that as well.
He’s just a baby.
I’m going to give the rookie credit for being fearless, and for the team to let him learn in these high pressure situations. If you believe in an extremely young player, these are the opportunities you give them
Rookie
and missed an easy layup
that was some of the most irrational confidence shit ive ever seen. kinda impressed by it ngl
The layup at the end was stupid but the rest of the shots were fine, they just didn’t drop
Good. Rookies should make mistakes, not be too afraid to even try. Positive moment for Mikel tonight.
Reports of Tatum’s death were greatly exaggerated
How has he recovered post Achilles? Is he slower now? He got the surgery so soon after and was pretty young so he was a good candidate for a good recovery
Doesn’t look slower but Tatum was never a speedster to begin with. With that said, it definitely looks like he’s been relying more on his strength and size. Pre-injury Tatum would dribble around until you bite but this Tatum is more aggressive to take his opportunities so whatever speed he lost, if any, is made up for just by making the first aggressive move
I was at the game tonight, so paying closer attention than usual. He was definitely putting his head down and driving more in crunch time than the rest of the game. Probably a conservation of energy thing, but he looked a lot more decisive going to the basket in the fourth than for most of the game.
Biggest thing I’ve noticed from last season to this season so far is that he looks less tentative making moves. It felt like he was in his head a lot last year like he had a very specific plan for how to move his body. I don’t think he’s thinking about it nearly as much anymore. Which is an expected change.
he’s also not rebounding as aggresively but its a small sample size
Just a different rebounding philosophy. Mitch is out there now and is the primary rebounder when he’s on the floor while him while PG is basically a similar physical profile as Tatum and they’ve split the crashing responsibility. There’s also no one else shorter than 6’6 on the rotation other than Payton and DWhite and both are capable rebounders anyways
4 games isn’t really a sample size, but thus far he seems no worse off for it. He’s averaging 24/7/8, which is low, but outside the game one stinker it’s been business as usual
28/8/6 after this game
is he dunking at all?
Not really. He seems more interested in drawing defenders and passing then powering to the hoop.
He also just rarely gets a clear path. He’s never had the speed to get around guys, and so much attention is paid to him by help defenders. But when he has a chance to go for it he isn’t.
i think he had a few in preseason but I dont think he has in the regular season
28/8/6. Low for what?
Those are literally prime Lebron years averages lol
Watch the games and see. Or use your eyes and watch the video that was posted
JB: Um, there’s no death, but you know, it might be a cancer. With some heart problems, you know what I mean? Just stay ready at all times.
Top player on a team that struggled to beat the nets, sure. Looks more like stat padding while on a shitty team to me.
40/8/5 with zero turnovers
Stat padding has lost all meaning. Actually one of the dumbest comments I’ve seen in this sub
Jason Tatum haters (myself included) in shambles.
This will probably get 300 upvotes and no interaction. Haters can’t stand when he plays well and is clutch
He’s actually such a solid player man. Doesn’t even do shit. Not sure how he even has haters and I’m saying this as a Knicks fan.
Jayson Tatum has 2 very distinct sets of detractors:
50+ year old white Celtic fans who are not quite boomers, but getting close to that point
Everybody under the age of 21
50+ year old white Celtic fans who are not quite boomers
This is me and I love JT unconditionally. He’s my 2nd favorite Celtics player I ever watched.
Went to Switzerland this summer and saw a random local teenage boy wearing a Tatum jersey. I think he’s pretty well liked.
Jayson Tatum’s jerseys rank among the highest-selling in the NBA, sitting at No. 2 in the U.S. (behind Stephen Curry), No. 3 in Brazil, and No. 6 in Canada.
Under 30* but yeah, pretty much
I always imagine what would’ve happened if reddit was at its peak in the 2000’s. Duncan would probably get so much shit for having no aura or some bullshit.
Then they’ll say it never happens
If you remove all of Tatums high scoring games and clutch moments he’s actually one of the worst players of all time.
You just gotta regress his performance to the mean
If you ignore all the times he put the ball in the hoop he’s never made a shot in his career.
They celebrating like the won the Superbowl for beating Brooklyn. Act like you been there before (they haven’t)
/Hate
“Lads, it the Nets”
500+ upvotes in less than 30 minutes.
Wrong already.
It’s a joke
Explain how it’s funny
yeah man people never give a shit about game winners
Reddit hates Tatum so yeah prob not
4000 upvotes and 400+ comments later…
So, you were confidently wrong 👍
brother it’s top of the subreddit in under an hour
Lol I did chuckle to myself that is was against Brooklyn. They should be dog walking that Brooklyn team tbf
Did you watch? Honestly
Nah dawg, I’m at work.
Lamb chops, gravy, and a side of Ruffles chips
Jayson Tatum is better than prime LeBron James
this is true
many are saying this
All of the smartest redditors
This is a factual description of events with no need for speculation.
danny granger > tatum > lebron james i don’t make the rules
Fuck dude am I the old head who’s gotta reference “he boomed me”? Because I fucking refuse. I’m not that old
The real question is whether he’s getting that shot up over the wall that was prime Roy Hibbert.
Who is Jason Tatum?
JaYson. Put some respect on the man!
Came here to say this.
It took him a last second game winner to beat the Nets. You just aren’t hating hard enough
After a second night B2B where we were up 5, and then decided to foul, and then Mitch 0/2 FTs to go to OT. Only reason we won was bc Tatum. Box score watchin mfs
You lack reading comprehension, and did not watch the game
Eh buzzer beater to beat BKN… not exactly moved.
Who’s in shambles? The guy got taken to OT by one of the biggest remaining standings dweller teams in the sport
Scottie with the big 0/12 the other night got you pressed
Implicit knock on Tatum that you think we remember regular season games around here and not playoff performances
Your FMVP left him for better
Mikel Brown giveth and taketh away
Dude was nasty until the last minute or so
Genuinely impressive to miss two game clinching layups in a span of 3 seconds of game time
Lights are brighter in the NBA. The kid gets a pass since it’s like his 2nd game
For sure. There’s no OT without him.
Him and Traore are both super smooth. Both small guards so it’s a bit of a Fox/Hali situation long term but Nets finally starting to see some young talent in the building
Of OT. I was not a fan of his in the last minute of regulation.
He sure was nasty at the end. Just a different kind of nasty.
Queens of the Stone Age mentioned
Wtf was that defense? Not even a hand up?
BEST PR TEAM EVER
Lamb chops and gravy
Grown ass man with two kids
Actually bad PR since a lot of people apparently didn’t think he’s clutch.
“Stop calling him Taintbum! That’s not his name, it’s Tatum!”-President of Tatum PR Inc.
MVPR team even
Legit game winner too. Not those tie game nonsense
Genuine buzzer-beater
Look at his shot, he went straight up instead of doing a bullshit fade like he often does, that’s why it went in. If this is the Jayson Tatum we are getting now the Celtics are in good fucking shape
When he extends straight up he has so much length on guys. Why make it hard on yourself all these years when you can just shoot a regular-ass shot.
That’s the Kevin Durant MO. Doesn’t look flashy, but you look at the box scores and he’s got 38 for some reason lol
I feel like he was doing it all game.
Straight up, overhead release that’s basically unblockable by anyone except a couple guys in the league.
That’s the type of stuff that will put him and keep him in the MVP conversation and winning games.
yeh he only needs to fade when its a turnaround. face up he should always be going straight up
I think he also did that straight up rise on his 3 over KAT I think vs the knicks.
Don’t worry he’s got a whole season to relearn the bad habits
Spot on. I didn’t even think at first but usually he’d take some fade away or falling sideways shit to prove he can do it. This was textbook
Every time he just rises up on balance instead of forcing that side-step fadeaway, his release looks so much smoother.
why did you go for that mbj man
Rookie shit brother. Insanely high pressure situation and that was the answer he came up with. Won’t be making this mistake for the rest of his career lol
Sometimes as a rookie you gotta learn the hard way
Poor kid honestly, having “his welcome to the league” moment. He’s a big reason why they got to OT at all, and is the entire reason they choked the lead they had at the end. He’ll learn from it though.
??? They only got to OT because of him wtf are you even talking about?
The 3 he hit with 0.2 seconds left to tie the game, I believe
Exactly.
It isn’t a “big reason” they got to OT. He is the entire reason. Weird of u/Rooleet to give him full credit for the bad layup decision and only partial credit for the insane shot to send them to OT
Kid kids an insane contested turnaround 3 with 0.2 seconds left and it’s only a “big reason” they make it to OT
He misses a layup in OT and the loss is “entirely” his fault
He said a big reason not the only reason
I know…. That’s my point…
It was a bonehead play. You blew it the first time, they called a foul, you get a second chance to just hold the ball and u tried again lol. All u had to do is hold the ball and make them foul you, smh.
Cool and cucumber
Buzzer beater OT 4 games into the season are you not entertained
my first unsuccessful hatewatch of the season, i don’t think i’m built for this lifestyle. i tuned into knicks vs pistons too bc i saw knicks were trailing and suddenly they’re leading
I haven’t had a successful hatewatch in ages. Every time I sit down to watch a team I dislike they always win.
Having successfully hatewatched the Dodgers get swept by the Brewers, it is a very fun time occasionally.
Lmao the overreactions after the first game, classic Reddit
Can’t wait to see how people would rationalize the Celtics winning 50+ games this year after all the shit they said during the summer lol
One redditor even commented that his shots look broken. Like he’s some expert at analyzing shots from a tv or some shit
said it after the knicks game, i had to go back and read some of the shit i was seeing in the 76ers post game thread and people were eating that garbage up
I’m so blessed to get to watch him every night. Never taken for granted
So say we all
Dud won’t even go down as a top 100
Double the 1st teams of all Cavs minus Bron combined
Oof
what’s your point, still happy to watch him regardless of what you think
He’s going up and down this thread replying to everyone big upping Tatum being a negative nancy, he has no point he is just a downer.
Extreme loser behaviour, I’ll never understand it
Do you dude but hating like this ain’t worth it
at least be funny. God even the trolls on this sub suck ass now. Enshittification strikes again
you speedrunning a ban or somethin
Damn you’re really a professional hater huh? Lmao
He’s already top 100. Your troll game is horrible
So you’re saying top 200? Top 200 players on the entire planet in the history of the world? Pretty fucking amazing.
Tatum already top 90 of all time at least
Cry some more please!!!
You’re up and down this whole post hating on JT. We know you’re just lashing out.
There’s a chance he’ll be top 25!
Just go to bed bro you’ll feel better in the morning
Dude could retire today and he’s top 50
Comment more
truly smartest Cavs fan
Have fun rooting Mitchell, Allen, and Mobley lmao. So much money, nothing to show for it.
Apologies to everyone on this sub for having to look at something that involves Jayson Tatum but isn’t negative.
These comments on every tatum highlight are just as corny and lame as all the negativity you’re talking about.
Wahhhh wahhhhhh people are noticing when we shit all over a guy for no good reason and I don’t like it wahhhhh
it’s lightly making fun of him and he’s still a hell of a player, Boston fans are so overprotective lmao
Truth hurts get over it
JT a dawg and haters hate to see it.
thanks for bringing the negativity this post warranted, i appreciate you
not even close
Why are you downvoting him, he right!
TATUM SAW THE THREADS AND THE DUDE WHO JINXED IT. MVP
MVP? Dude only shows up vs the nets and still needed OT
He scored 36/9/7 against the defending champs on Friday
You mean the 1-3 team? Just bums!
Tell me when did Mitchell show up in the playoffs
What? He shows up always. If he shoots poorly he runs the offense and gets a bunch of assists. Can’t ask for more of a star in my book. Pleasure to have a guy like that on the team
Cavs celebrating that analytics championship?
there’s that Ohio education
Highest clutch shot percentage in the league the last full season he played
https://stats.inpredictable.com/nba/ssnPlayerSplit.php?season=2024&pos=ALL&team=ALL&po=0&frdt=2025-10-21&todt=2026-06-13&shot=both&dst=team
Boston haters in shambles after game one
All I’ve ever heard on this sub is Jayson Tatum isn’t clutch. If he keeps this up, he’s a dark horse candidate for MVP.
Those people don’t actually watch him play basketball or watch a lot of basketball themselves. If they did or cared to look it up, they would see he’s clutch. They let their hate boner for him guide their thinking
This is maybe his 5th buzzer beater already this year, including end of quarter buzzers. It’s been fun!
Wild 10 minutes from Mikel
Did he not watch D’Aaron Fox in the Finals? Why is he shooting a layup with 3 seconds left up one? Make them foul you.
my fuckin lord this man hates the nets
Same. Since the Jason Williams days, and especially the Keith Van Horn era.
This might end up being his mvp year the way he’s playing plus he’s got narrative
He definitely has the best chances in the East this year depending on how the Lakers season goes it might come down to him or Luka
Celtics vs Lakers, Tatum vs Luka as it should be. Honestly Shai still probably got the or second best odds
I feel like shai isn’t gonna have as strong of an argument because when he did win a big part of it was how dominant the thunder were and without jdub they’ll still be really good but not as dominant. His numbers are gonna be great and they’ll win a lot of games but if they’re near the Lakers in the standings Luka is taking his votes.
wemby?
They played nearly the entire year without jdub last year what?
Heard someone give this take pre-season and I completely agree. Either Tatum or Luka’s gonna get the MVP, and whoever doesn’t will probably never get one
Did Wemby just die?
I said a similar thing earlier and got downvoted to hell
Skill issue ngl
40-8-5 with 0 turnovers btw
MVP CAMPAIGN STARTS HERE
Ended before it even began. Dude needs the nets on the court to even look competent.
Is your loser ass gonna hate under every comment go get some bitches
You’re a strange person
Cmon now. Goofy as hell
he is but it’s cool he hit a game winner
Gene?
Cmon if you’re gonna rage bait you gotta try harder than that
Youre literally under every comment hating on tatum 😂😂 i love to see the haters seethe
Does this make you feel big? Does your mommy say good job after each comment?
Dude wtf was this game? Literally turned it off because I thought it was over, then looked up and it was in OT. JT was unreal tonight
Mitchell Robinson sold at the line lol
Queta stupid foul, Mitch should be locked in a gym until he can make FTs
The C’s were just sandbagging for the TatuMVP agenda
Brooklyn really went for the “double the offense, half the defense” strategy up to the last shot tonight
Twice the pride, double the fall -Mikal brown jr probably
r/NBA 9⁄11 after doing a victory lap all OT.
Great PR teammmm
Love that he took a midrange instead of jacking up a 3 down by 1
Hes done this so many times already. I personally can’t think of one time hes taken a three in a situation like this.
It’s crazy how Tatum went from washed to unwashed, huh Tatum haters?
Now he got that STANK!
If he missed there would’ve been 500 comments by now clowning him but since he made it, less than a 100 lmao stay salty haters
Sure is quite in here! Mostly just celtic flairs.
Reports of his demise have been grossly exaggerated
GIMME THEM LAMB CHOPS
Okay, now it’s safe to post his final stat line
