Look man. I’m not a huge fan of the three guard lineup either. I also recognize that we’re running a freaking 4 guard lineup currently which I’m going to assume is temporary until Harris comes back. And that makes it even more complicated to really evaluate what they’re doing in the back court because clearly four guards and Victor is not sustainable nor something they’re seriously considering long-term

At the end of the day as someone with someone close to me who works for an NBA team, there’s just a lot more to it than X’s and O’s and 2K stats. The Spurs know what they have with Harper, and while I have no doubt that the kid himself is being agreeable and pleasant.. He also just spent the last 5 months with the entire world echoing what he probably already knows… That he’s a couple of years away from making a whole freaking ton of money and starting to earn personal accolades as long as he’s getting the minutes

And on the flip side, Fox is like 18 months removed from being the kind of guy who could drop 100 points in 48 hours and be a genuine star.

There are politics in this, there always has been and there always will be.

If the Spurs start the season benching either one of those guys. Even if everyone says they’re cool with it, it runs the risk of frustrations.

These guys aren’t idiots, and they want to win. If you go out and you give them exactly what they want, to each start and get a lot of shots in minutes, and try to take advantage of what is a very forgiving start to the season schedule wise, then you have some actual X’s and O’s and evidence to back yourself up if you’re Mitch while maintaining what had been one of the most dynamic and high chemistry locker rooms in the NBA last year.

If they still look this listless and mediocre in a couple of weeks. I’m sure the tough conversations will start. And I’m sure they’ve already talked that out with everyone.

When you say why, try to fix what’s not broken, the reality is even if the roster looks almost identical, the Spurs are simply in a different situation than they were 6 months ago, both in how they manage Harper, and also how they now manage the ultimate championship or bus expectations.

They know they have the capabilities to beat anyone on any given night. They know they can get through an NBA season with a good record. Their goal now is to try to still maintain that level of consistency, while maximizing every bit of talent they have on the roster to make sure when they do get themselves back in a situation in the postseason where they really are eye to eye with another Juggernaut they’ve done their due diligence in attempting to squeeze every bit of talent and cohesion out of this roster possible throughout the year and can confidently know that they are putting out the very best they have on the court

there trying something different to start the year because they probably believe to win the game there likely gonna go small in the playoffs with the wemby + 3 guards plus one. so there fixing the vibes now rather than using it late like last year, i dont see anyhting wrong with that. plus i still stand on the fact that champenie cannot be a starter if our goal is winning a championship cause hes the weakst out there at times

This is exactly when it be nice to see Cardwell & Max out there together or Cardwell for Chase down blocks with Sabonis. Missing both backup centers is a bummer of possibilities.
