Thats how its supposed to be done so as to not disrupt active play
This might be the time in history it’s been called correctly.
The first game after they implement this rule it was called like this, then never again
Classic us!!
Nope, people complained about the last time it happened “late” as well.
Damn today I learned
Also let’s give the refs a second to think it through. Most fouls are clear, either illegal contact occurred or it didn’t. A flop is a player intentionally deceiving the ref. That can take a sec to suss out.
Would rather them make a slow call than a wrong call
Commentators said they do it on purpose to wait for a “dead ball”, so when the play is completed then they can call it.
Like a delayed penalty in hockey
However the offending team still got to benefit by scoring
Exactly, so literally the opposite of hockey/lacrosse. I wouldn’t mind a delayed penalty rule if the flopper is on defense
It didn’t benefit the offense
This is what I thought. It makes sense
No, the Nets bucket counts, it doesn’t get rolled back or anything. It’s simply not a play stopping foul, they let the play conclude as normal, the outcome of the play counts, then they stop play for the technical free throw.
That kind of incentivizes flopping sometimes though. Late in a game if i have a tech to spare and i can get a teammate an easy bucket by flopping, it forces the other team to make freethrows, which they should, but they might not, which means the advantage swing actually goes to the flopping team, and specifically in late game, close score situations.
and i can get a teammate an easy bucket by flopping
How are you getting a teammate and easy bucket by flopping? The other team has 5 defenders, and your team has 4 offensive players.
I’m not arguing if it’s a good rule or not, just letting you know how the rule works. In your deleted comment you claimed that it’s an issue that only one team is playing for anything, that the Nets bucket got called back, which isn’t the case.
Please give me a scenario where one player flopping can “get a teammate an easy bucket”…flopping is only beneficial if you trick the refs into calling a foul. If the ref sees you flopping they probably aren’t calling the foul? Thus no advantage gained? Unless they flop into defenders ect. which would be a foul that gets called and play stopped thus no advantage gained. Not sure what situation could possibly benefit the flopping team
Bucket was not taken away from BKN, their total went from 57 to 59 and then Celtics took technical FT and then inbounded from their side out of bounds.
Doesn’t look like the 2 points they scored during the possession were called back
Yeah this is pretty bad. It should definitely interrupt possession if the one on possession is doing the flopping.
Just like soccer, they’ll let play continue if the player/team fouled has an advantage.
I think that’s their point. The Nets had the ball when Randle flopped.
More of this call. Blatant flop that wasn’t debatable. And called the right way where the refs let the play play out and then call it after when there’s a stoppage or natural break in action.
Can’t stress enough how significant the delayed whistle is. It let’s the flopper take himself out of the live play AND gives everybody in the arena an extra moment to see how stupid they look.
The audio visual folks should wait until the flopper is arguing with the ref before they replay the flop too 😂
Lmaoooo
Well no. If the offensive team has no chance to score then there’s no reason to let it play out. Just make the call. One team is playing neutered otherwise. Thats not acceptable.
They scored and then the technical was called before the inbound.. nobody was neutered
Aaah, i was thinking the points were called back. That still doesn’t make sense though as they potentially benefited from the flop still. If they miss the technical free throws then the flop was worth it, potentially. Late in a game if you still have both your techs, this actually incentivizes flopping in some situations.
You’re overthinking this, mate
In what way? Boston just gets the ball back
No flop called: inbound the ball
Flop called: technical free throw then inbound the ball
This is beautiful. I’m literally on my feet, applauding right now. Textbook stuff, purge this nonsense from the game (without interrupting the pacing)
They’re not going to call this consistently so savor it for now
I know, usually the first two months or so of the season. But, a man can hope. The softness of the “modern” NBA is slowly fading away
And then it’ll make a reappearance during a pivotal playoff moment, then vanish again.
The refs would need to call it multiple times every game to actually put a dent in all the flopping
They called a second one in this game, so this crew is doing their job.
What’s the down side of that? What fan wouldn’t want less flopping in the game?
OKC fans
Flopping should mandate an injury substitution that persists until the end of the quarter.
I like the sound of that
The only reason this got called was because of Randle’s comically over the top, Looney Tunes-ass flop.
Yup no way is SGA getting called for the same thing
Do you know who your best player is?
Yes, and Luka jaws and complains a lot, which is a problem
But he doesn’t have the meme level flops that SGA has. Theres a reason for that lol
Must be tough watching Luka and Reaves for you
Reaves, yeah, absolutely, he is a fucking wussy. Now Luka draws smart fouls while manipulating the defense
Flirting vs. harassment
Lmao
There was one in the heat wolves game that came a full possession after the fact. They wait until there’s a break in play
League will use this tape to teach the call going forward
Love the name
It’s a good call
Great call
Wtf was that? Dude is so big and he acts like that.
He acted like a football player on offense and helpless mr. magoo on defense
I think that’s actually how they’ve been doing it by waiting until the play is over
I love the idea of delayed calls in basketball. Someone gets fouled? Raised hand and play through until stopped. Fouls can stack so defense is always distinctivized from continuing to foul
Hockey… let us a 6th guy until possession change
Mascots allowed to set screens
I’m on board with mascots get to run on the court during delayed penalties lol
I’ve always thought a guy fouling out should result in a timed man advantage
Sounds good on paper. So wait until the guy misses a shot and then call the foul. Or wait until he scores and then call the foul. With all the gambling incentives and refs already caught rigging games back in the day, this sounds like a great tool
My dude have you never watched soccer? This exact suggestion is called “the advantage” rule for how they handle fouls.
Completely different sport and flow in soccer. Sometimes in soccer you might only get 1 or 2 real opportunities during a game to score so the impact is so much higher. Basketball probably has the most scoring opportunities of any major sport. The team that was fouled in soccer and is continuing to possess and advance must get that potentially once in a game opportunity. Basketball fouls also are way more tactical simply because you get way more of them. Plenty of guys take fouls to literally shut a play down intentionally. Soccer you can be out in one foul. Basketball you get 6, (unless is a flagrant 2 of course), so you are naturally more willing to commit a foul. I don’t hate the delay here due it being a flop, but shouldn’t delay on every foul it would be a bad and controversial watch. They’d likely also have to up the foul limit which would just result in more game grinding fouls. I don’t think that improves the game of basketball.
There’s too many. It shouldn’t be an advantage to foul
They mark it somehow so they don’t wait until the play is over to call a foul. Same as a defensive offsides in football
Seeing a ref throw a yellow penalty flag beanbag at a flopper who is laying on the floor would be absolutely amazing.
Bonus points if the refs can actually bean the player with the penalty flag. Next stoppage of play, assess all penalty flags and then move on.
So who bet on, will Julius Randle receive a technical tonight
*distinktivized
No. Then you just stack intentional fouls on Mitchell Robinson and one team literally couldn’t play offense.
If the offense commits a foul and maintains possession then the play should stop immediately when the foul IS COMITTED. How did this play continue on when the offense flopped?
Dubious handles unethical hoops
Start calling it and suspend players after 5. I know the tech suspension is a thing but make this a separate category to cut the bullshit out
I love how Randle is shocked his flopping was called. I am also shocked btw. Rare ref W on Reddit.
When a flop occurs that the ref is going to call, they are instructed to wait until there is a dead ball, or a stop in play, to blow the whistle. In other words, the play needs to finish.
This is how I learn Julius Randle is in the nets
damn PG is so strong
Oh, a lot, he is the NBA Hercules
He even looked surprised himself in the clip lol
Please god make this standard
These refs are amazing when they use common sense
Literally dropped to my knees in a Target parking lot seeing this called to perfection (how the fuck is this a tie game?).Edit: Derrick White my lord and savior.
They really trying to crack down on this, its hilarious and I love it . Another 🍺
This sort of situation could use what hockey does and have the ref throw an arm up to signify that the penalty is called but play continues until the team at fault gains possession. Love the call either way
The first and last of the season.
At least you didn’t say “I can’t wait for them to call this for two weeks and never call it again”.
If refs spent a lot of time being competent at calling flops, why can’t do it with traveling? 🤔
There was actually a traveling call on Pritchard called a couple minutes later that they never call
Only if you aren’t a superstar they call it
Shit I gotta tune into this game. Refs got their shit together!!!
That was to make them feel better about having the flop called against them.
I think the NBA has dug themselves too deep of a hole with the whole gather step crap. They’ve made it less black and white and, in turn, tougher to officiate
less black and white… more red and white…. and buttery
Why is everyone talking about butter tn
The rule is the same as it’s always been.
It’s the players that have been stretching and manipulating the rule.
The term “gather step” was introduced as a way to clarify the boundry, as players had been pushing up closer and closer to the edge to gain advantage.
Something I’ve never thought about but with the pace of the game nowadays and how much movement/cutting there is, I wonder if it is genuinely just easier to miss if someone travels or not.
They need to have one additional ref permanently assigned to watch the ballhandlers feet/hands to call travels, carrys etc. Would be interesting.
Then a lot of possessions will be stopped lmao
Players would adjust…eventually.
they would adjust really quickly honestly
I see this as an absolute win.
called a travel on luka in in transition in crunch time the other night when he was in the midst of a 50 pt game
Giannis would be out of the league
Love this
Deserved call, this shit has to stop. That call isn’t even debatable
That’s so egregious lmao PG was even shocked at how hard he flopped
The fix is in
