Pete Rose is overblown. Dude bet on his own team to win. He wasn’t intentionally throwing games or trying to lose. I’ve got to issues with someone betting on themselves. Obviously your can’t have players involved with gambling in any way for optics, but a dude betting on himself to win I don’t have issue with.

Large-Appearance8999

27 | 12 hours ago

This is such a boomer take. Every time Pete Rose comes up someone says something like this but it doesn’t factor in that this almost certainly results in him wanting to win certain games more than others.

Did he pass up throwing his best reliever because he didn’t have money on tonight’s game?

Did he start a pitcher on shortened rest because he did have money on a game?

Just betting on your team to win still has an effect on the outcomes of games.

AntiAntiDentite7

How is this a “boomer take”? I swear y’all attach buzz words on everything like you’re trying to write a click bait headline.

Thepalmtree2

10 | 12 hours ago

Pete Rose says he only bet on his teams to win… we have no way to know for sure. It’s not like compulsive gamblers and liars are well known for their self restraint and morality. And even if he did only bet on his team, that still can affect how he managed and the overall outcomes.

1ncognito | MEM

18 | 12 hours ago

By betting on his own team to win, sometimes, Rose as the manager put himself in a position where he was personally incentivized to make decisions to win specific games even if they weren’t the right long term decisions. I’ll never understand why people act like because he “didn’t bet against his own team” (which I find extremely hard to believe) that somehow made it okay

Im not sure if its relevant with him specifically but there’s plenty of stories of pro athletes (or actors/musicians) who basically get scammed into hiring more people than they need so they’re paying 10% here, 10% there, 5%, 3%.

Add on to that they’re probably expecting their chunk is a lot bigger in the first place, it’s easy to see how they can “feel broke” when the money isn’t coming in like they expected. It’s like when we all get our first job and expect it to be X amount and then learn about taxes the hard way lol.

The main reason why he involved himself with the bet fixing was bc he had “ millions in gambling debts”.

But I guess that just goes back to him wanting more money thus the gambling? But then again some people, a lot, just gamble because it’s available to them and addicting

Dawn_of_Dayne | West

1 | 5 hours ago

Some are. And could be the case here, as the other reply pointed out that the reason for gambling could be wanting more money.

But some people are simply financially illiterate and blow money (and/or scammed) and then do stupid things to try to make up for their losses. Not to mention people can struggle with gambling addiction that can cancel out just about any amount of income.

eekram

2 | 12 hours ago

Because these people compare themselves to their peers which makes a ton more money than themselves (unless you’re a supermax guy). Their environment makes them think their income is not enough when it could already feed families for multiple generations and then some.

The same in nba, they all abuse the fact that gambling is an addictive scam that promises people payouts from the sky. Nah there is no such thing as free money.

No athlete should be ever getting sponsored by gambling institution the same way no doctor should be sponsored by pharmaceutical corporations. You know what I mean ?

TripleDoubleFart

-1 | 11 hours ago

All gambling is degenerate.

That’s a bit extreme.

GolotasDisciple | LAL

5 | 10 hours ago

It’s not. Just like the drug trade is purely for degenerates. You are literally poisoning everything around you purely for profit.

Now, I am not here to be a saint, I do my own shit…. but we ought to call out major players and people who promote this shitty behavior. Like if you want to do drugs, gamble or whatever as a user that’s different… but you are still kind of a degenerate though right :D

Like… you can’t just pretend that gambling in the NBA isn’t comparable to pharma and doctors…. At worst, you get something like the Sackler family pushing GPs to prescribe opioids to people. In that sense, everyone in that trade. Pharma corporations, marketing, sales, and even doctors who were falsely pushing drugs to people who either didn’t need them or needed different ones.

You would simply say all of them are degenerates…. and what’s worse, this opioid crisis also created plenty of people who were wrongly brought into the pharma system and became addicted to opioids. Ruining their lives as they spent their last money on drugs maybe they never needed in the first place.

Sounds familiar? Isn’t addiction based philosophy basically how gambling operates? Their whole business is to take as much money from people as possible and create an illusion of system where merit/knowledge matters.. It doesn’t… Just like in Casino. “The house always wins”….
