Even with the benefit of hindsight, I feel like Bam is the better choice, though neither option is particularly exciting for a teams long term hopes. Butler can barely stay on the court the last few years and can’t have much time left in the league. And even with Bam struggling, an overpaid defensive specialist is better than an overpaid undersized scoring guard in Herro IMO.

Picking the versatile defensive center with a limited offensive game is a choice so many teams make but tying up so much of your cap/apron space under this CBA for a player who can’t be a high end player on offense makes team building very hard.

But that’s not a reality of Herro being better than Bam, it’s because Bam and Giannis go together like oil and water. I like Herro, but Bam is much more of a ceiling raiser than him with the right roster. This current roster does nothing to maximize Bam and/or Giannis and just has them double down on something they’re both already great at while accounting for very few of their weaknesses.
Herro next to Giannis makes more sense to win regular season games, that’s definitely true - but they’d have a hard cap on their success because you need to always hide Herro on defense and his offense isn’t good enough to make up for that over a solid sample size or in a playoff environment. But being more fit to win regular season games doesn’t actually make someone a better overall player.
