By entering into a partnership, the NBA is able to regain some control and limit bets that would threaten the integrity of the game - like betting unders on player stats or on player injuries. Yes, it’s bad that gives more legitimacy to prediction markets, but US Government allowed that to happen already.

Legalizing sports betting actually has pretty similar support with both parties so I doubt it changes much.

From a money making perspective it is a good idea. From a moral standpoint it is really hard to defend prediction markets. I don’t gamble and I feel as though gambling advertisements should be as restricted as smoking advertisements. That being said, sports gambling is well defined in the law and comes with a hefty “sin-tax” that only affects people who decide to gamble and that tax revenue can be beneficial to the community.

Prediction markets avoid this and how they are to be taxed is largely up in the air. This leaves us with the same, well-documented, societal damages without the additional tax revenue to try to offset said damage.

The crazy thing is, they ban or limit bets for winning players. Professional sports gamblers have to make new account or have random people put bets down for them now. Casinos no longer let people who are good at predictions keep placing bets.

So if your coworkers are still allowed to bet with no limitations, they definitely are not making money.

I used kalshi as a think experiment. A big visual that gets people is that the “Winnings” section doesn’t subtract the amount you bet, and a loss reports as 0. I know people can do simple math, but loses don’t say -5 and winning \(12 on a \)5 bet doesn’t say +7 it says +12.

It inflates the wins and makes the losses look netural, rather than deficits.

Its a scourge here and people have tried banning it or making reforms but the government isn’t really budging.

I don’t gamble but I can see how easy it is to get addicted. When you’re bored, it gives stakes and drama to random games you wouldn’t care about otherwise. If you win, it gives you validation of how smart and insightful you are. When you lose, it gives you that itch that maybe you were just unlucky and can get back to even with one more sure fire bet.

I think it’s something genetic/hard wired where you either REALLY like it or you don’t. I get the appeal of many vices and enjoy some from time to time. But betting on sports just doesn’t do anything special for me. At all.

Man I moved into a big apartment building of a bunch of people my age and we had an apartment event to meet people and this guy came down and within 5 minutes was trying to get me to use his Fanduel sign up code so he’d get some money to bet. He’s like “and if you make any bets please send them to me so I can trail them”. Brother I don’t even know what that means! This was 3 years ago and I ghosted that guy ever since but keep having to walk by him in the lobby and shit. I think he was in the midst of a bad spell with drinking and stuff because since then he’s cleaned himself up and started exercising. Glad I didn’t get sucked into all that shit though

The simplest analogy I can offer: I’ve never really been a NFL fan, but once I started playing fantasy football, I was glued to the TV every Sunday. Now, after giving it up 5 years ago, I haven’t watched a single game and feel bad for my friends who still play.

Gambling taps into our brains reward system in a truly insidious way. I’ve been watching every documentary/video that gets recommended to me and it’s like watching drug addicts except there isn’t a chemical substance being ingested.

Folks become addicted to chasing that high that they ignore how often they are in the negative or low.

When I was younger you had to go at the very fucking least to the store to get a scratch off, and for most places at least a bit out of your way to get to an actual casino, if one was even available. This is free money. Then Fuck Jr. loses and gets mad at the professional for doing their job.
