Dizzy_Cow_ | SAS

12 | 7 hours ago

How in the world can you call Luka Doncic a tier 2 player? He led a good not great roster to the NBA Finals on a bum knee. Jokic just lost in 6 games to a Timberwolves team missing their 3 best players because he can’t play a lick of defense and yet people always hold that against Luka.

BlooregardQKazoo

-16 | 7 hours ago

Tier 1 is Jokic and SGA. Luka does not belong in that tier. Tier 2 players are still really, really good.

vrilro

The only tier one guys you can put against his body of work are jokic and sga, luka is not overrated lol

BlooregardQKazoo

Yes, those guys are the tier 1 guys that are clearly better than Luka. And Wemby will probably join them after this year.

I regularly see Luka put in the same tier as Jokic and SGA despite not belonging alongside those guys. And MVP voting has reflected that.

UraniumDisulfide | LAL

8 | 9 hours ago

SGA Jokic and Wemby all had very strong MVP cases last season. 23-24 was probably the closest Luka has come to “deserving” the award, but I still don’t think it’s clear that he was the #1 best. The NBA just has a lot of insanely good players, so being an insanely good player doesn’t automatically make you the best in the league.

yappersyap123

He didn’t even come second rofl

SGA without a roster full of lottery to mid-first round picks was leading his team to the lottery. All MVPs have good rosters that support their MVP narrative by adding wins

Chet is the GOAT when used to make arguments against SGA, the rest of the time, certified bum.

BombshellExpose | LAL

10 | 9 hours ago

Chet is a very good player, anyone calling him a bum is trolling you.

Crobe | SEA

He was, half the team was injured that whole year, he carried the absolute shit out of every game. Got injured in February, carried last 3 months on 1 leg, carried the injury to playoffs, carried to finals where celtics were just too good.

The seeding only matters on certain years, depending on the narrative.

Advanced stat deniers are the flat earthers of sports. There’s a reason why teams with front offices who are willing to embrace those stats win.

Luka scored 52 points today while going +3. They lose this game if the team didn’t go on an insane run the SECOND he sat out in the second. He didn’t carry anything, he just doesn’t share the ball.

Edit: yes I’m well aware that +/- by itself is meaningless, but it does feed into on-off stats, thanks for your very useful opinions. Please stick to counting stats Luka glazers.

Crobe | SEA

6 | 9 hours ago

Advanced stats are not bad at all.

It just doesnt mean everything for most valuable player.

Also the fact that you are using +- as a stat ( that is not used as anything relevant by anyone in basketball world ) to make any kind of point just proves you have no idea about basketball.

Thanks for outing yourself.

yappersyap123

And this is actually why it feels impossible for him to win MVP, because it really is nothing new. But if a player like Tatum or Edwards had this stat line, and continued averaging MVP numbers, they could get pushed into winning MVP. But since it’s expected out of Luka, it feels like it won’t matter.

samhit_n | LAL

51 | 9 hours ago

He’s somehow gonna miss out on an MVP again.

BlooregardQKazoo

-32 | 8 hours ago

That’s what happens when there are two guys clearly better than you (Jokic and SGA) and a generational talent whose team made the finals last year (Wemby).

samhit_n | LAL

15 | 8 hours ago

Yeah, but a great player wins MVPs even in stacked generations. Westbrook and Harden won during the peak of the LeBron, Curry, and KD era. KG, Nash, and Dirk won during the peak of the Shaq, Duncan, and Kobe era. Even Barkley and Malone managed to win during the Jordan era.

Luka’s closer to Jokic and SGA than some of those players were to the best players of their generation. Luka has also put up seasons on par with or better than Jokic and SGA during their MVP seasons.

BlooregardQKazoo

-7 | 7 hours ago

I don’t think those are good examples.

By the time Nash and Dirk were winning MVPs Shaq and Duncan were both getting older, and Duncan was never the type to put up super gaudy stats (his titles are the big driver of his all-time argument). And Kobe was a non-factor, as he only won 1 MVP and was hardly blocking anyone from winning.

When Chuck won his Jordan had just won 2 in a row and there wasn’t a second guy on his level like there is with Jokic/Shai. And when Malone won his Jordan was in his mid-30s.

When Russ and Harden won theirs LeBron was taking regular seasons lightly and wasn’t contending for MVPs anymore. Durant and Steph were on the same team, really hurting the argument that either was MVP.

Two guys being as good as Jokic and Shai are at the same time, and still putting up gaudy regular-season stats as they approach/cross 30, is uncommon. And then just as an opening appears, with voter fatigue ready to strike SGA and Luka hitting the stage where voters will feel pressure to give him a lifetime achievement MVP, a generational guy’s team made the finals early so voters won’t be able to make him wait for his team to get good the same way they did with LeBron.

Also, it should be noted that someone did already get an MVP during this stretch - Embiid. Asking for two lesser players to get one might be asking for too much.

Fun fact: Allen Iverson is 6-5 while scoring 50 points.

Western-Election-997 | LAL

32 | 9 hours ago

That pretty much destroys the “stat padding” narrative(which was always ridiculous to begin with)

When you are 10-0 with 50+ points it shows every point you scored mattered for the win

and it was true again tonight. Besides Reaves, the rest of the team was struggling to get going on offense, they needed every bucket for a close win

tirednsleepyyy

30 | 9 hours ago

I mean in his 73 point game he probably could have gone for like 90 if he wasn’t trying to win lmfao. He was desperately making every good pass in that one.

Edit: also it’s not like he would have had to chuck and pray to get it, that 91% TS% he had is the highest Ts% of not only every 70 point regular season game, but every regular season game over 56.

Dat_Boi_John | Slovenia

10 | 8 hours ago

Luka is genuinely one of the worst stat padders in the league. He actively tanks his stats to fool around. In the first game of the season, he had like 23 pts on 74% TS, and he ended on 26 or 28 pts on 60% TS, cause he just started jacking up random threes while up 30.

I guess that’s kind of what makes Luka who he is, the fact he plays the game in a fun carefree way, but it is annoying for his stats.
