all i have to say is; if Yandy didn’t want to leave it up to the ump, he should STOP SWINGING AT BALLS IN THE DIRT
Just a friendly reminder that the MLB rulebook does not define what constitutes a checked swing.
My unpopular opinion is that most checked swings should be called as swings. When you throw the barrel of the bat over the plate…you tried to hit the ball.
By the way the rule is worded, anything more than a player twitching the bat off their shoulder a little could be technically correctly assumed by a base ump as intent to hit the ball.
Hell, even holding the swing to within the plane of the plate could be considered equivalent to holding the bat out for a bunt attempt which is also considered an offer at the pitch.
I think it should be cross the front of the plate
I was always taught it was more about the elbows “breaking” than where the bat ended up. I guess it would be nice to have an official rule for it. It’s the last subjective thing in the game at this point.
Cross the front of the plate, barrel extends past [body part], or the notion goes past a certain angle like 90° to the home plate, etc.
They need something though
I agree with this in principle, but in practice, wed see an even bigger drop in offense than the one we’re in right now. Pitchers are so good now.
After every checked swing replay, i’ve maybe seen 3 or 4 undeniable no-gos. Honestly, pulling off a pure check swing against 90+mph pitches has got to be harder than sending one to the bleachers. Only reason I justify umpire’s leeway on those calls
Yeah, just make it if the bat goes over the front of the plate, it’s a swing. I swear, pornography, balks, and checked swings all have that “can’t define but in know it when I see it” and it doesn’t need to be that way
Was porn a type or was that intentional and I’m just missing how it ties into all this? 😭😭
Not a typo: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_know_it_when_I_see_it
I literally just watched the Jomboy video on this today lol
Well see how the bat went past his leg when he swung? Thats a swing hope that helps
Need to see another angle of that
Top angle looked like a swing, side really really didn’t. I think it’s defensible but that’s a pretty tough call
I don’t think it’s particularly close. The side angle shows the bat doesn’t even get close to halfway, never mind breaks it.
People are always tricked by the overhead angle but that’s a silly perspective trick that means nothing. Check swings will basically always look like they went if your camera angle is above and behind the batter.
Yandy got beat by the pitch imo but I’m also a bitch ass Yankees fan
He pulled his bat back quickly, you can see how far it went if you watch in super slow-motion. Caminero’s was absurd last night and they said he didn’t go. 🤷
Really? ReAlLy?
Aerial view makes it look borderline, I think it’s an okay call but you see them called the other way sometimes
Literally the game yesterday a guy went further then this and it was called no swing (when it should have been a swing).
Than*
I think this evens things out.
By win probability added the Rays got fucked much, much harder on this than you guys did yesterday
It was definitely one of the closer calls- could have gone either way. Not a bad call tho
This was only angle that sold me on it. Was against it til I saw the overhead
But that was not directly overhead. It was behind and above. All for the NL but that is not an overhead.
How about perpendicular to the plate?
It’s not overhead though, and the bat rising after the check swing from this angle gives the false appearance that the swing is continuing, which it wasn’t. An actual overhead view would confirm that just like the side view confirmed it.
I mean…I don’t even really think it’s “borderline.” That looks pretty damn clear from this angle.
He’s lifting his bat vertically at this point, which from this angle makes it look like forward movement. The angle is useless for determining anything.
that is a misleading perspective though. hes pulled the bat up. need an angle directly overhead.
It’s not clear. And a swing is defined as an attempt to hit the ball, not by angles.
Is the announcing box angle the best way to determine a check now? lol wtf is this
So you can make that call with our seeing his wrists? It’s not if the bat passes the plate. Is waist is in an open stance. The fact you think that oucture proves anything shows what you know about baseball. Thanks
Alright. How about this angle?
Mk
All three angles we got were awful. Is there really no straight on side view in that ballpark?
Same with no good angle on the play at home. Really frustrating
The ump that decides it doesn’t even get a side view.
Yes, but I want one as a fan so I can properly get mad at the guy who must decide based on one full speed look from 45°.
Someone did post a good side view video on here earlier. I do think it was a swing.
Good thing the rulebook is super clear on this
Just saw the replay and ik theres no real gauge but mines always been if the bat breaks the plane of home and it appears it did. In real time tho I thought no way
He 100% went
A view from behind the batter at that angle is always going to make the bat look in front of the plate.
Hockey fans know this well. Even a few degrees can make a puck look like it’s fully across the goal line, when it’s actually on top of the line.
Too bad they don’t play hockey in Wisconsin.
That angle is poor for determining a check swing
But look at the side angle from behind the first base umpire. The bat was not pointed up, which is what can make the above and behind the plate angle deceptive; and the bat is basically is pointed at the umpire. He 100% went.
Thanks for providing a screenshot shot showing he didn’t go
That doesn’t look like a swing at all. It’s not “pointed at the umpire.”
I honestly don’t know if he went, but at least I can admit that lol
This angle is from behind home plate. It’s not even close to being dead-on from above.
The two side angles did not look like a swing at all IMO.
These overhead angles are a good lesson in perspective, and most people are failing it pretty badly. Easy for eyes to get tricked, and going up looks like going forward from this angle, even though it really isn’t.
A check swing basicallg always looks like it’s going over from the overhead angle because the act of checking a swing raises the batter’s hands. But up is not forward, it just looks like way from above.
(I don’t have a rooting interest, just hate these overhead angles that show nothing useful)
Umpire on the roof must’ve called it
You’re correct and it’s not close. The other angle is a different perspective than we get most of the time. A lot of overconfident redditors seeing a camera view that’s at least 6 feet to the right of the 1st base ump. It’s tricking their eyes.
Top angle shows a swing
I don’t like the top angle because it’s from kind of behind the plate.
That’s fair
Top angle is weird becuse it isn’t actually directly top down. If you move the bat up, it makes it look like it’s still going forward. Side angle has been the best view
And the other two angles didn’t. Tough call
I dont disagree
If anything, Id be more upset at the previous check swing called strike
I mean flair checks out. There’s no definition and it’s up to interpretation
Top angle always does because the act of checking usually causes hands and/or the bat to be raised. And raising hands or a bat looks like going forward from this angle because it’s over and behind the batter. But that’s just a trick of perspective, where up looks like forward if you’re above it.
The side angle is much more telling because it disregards the irrelevant vertical angle.
Can we get a camera on home plate? Just like a super microscopic camera planted inside?
Yeah he went
It really looks like he went for it in real time
Here you go
This is the worst angle to analyze the swing at lol are the umps in the announcers box now?
Nah
Make up call from Chourio not getting call overturned at the plate
fire
water
air
earth
fuckin check swings how do they work
You can’t just be up there and just doin a check swing like that
The batter is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, ball, that is like, you know, just trying to hit the ball. You can’t do that.
Check Swing Rules
You can’t just be doin’ a check swing like that.
1a. A check swing is when you
1b. Okay well listen. A check swing is when you check your
1c. Let me start over
1c-a. The batter is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, baseball, that makes the umpire have to figure out if he was doing, you know, just trying to hit the ball. You can’t do that.
1c-b. Once the pitcher throws the ball, you can’t be over here and say to the pitcher, like, “I’m gonna hit ya! I’m gonna hit that ball! You just check my slugger rating!” and then just be like you didn’t even do that.
1c-b(1). Like, if you’re about to swing and then don’t swing, you have to not have swung. You cannot have swung. Does that make any sense?
1c-b(2). You gotta be, stopping motion of the bat, and then, before you just swing it.
1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have the bat out here, like this, but then there’s the umpire down there you gotta think about.
1c-b(2)-b. Devo hasn’t been on the radio in forever. I hope they don’t typecast “Whip it”.
1c-b(2)-b(i). Oh wait, Mark Mothersbaugh did “You must whip it” too! That would be even worse.
1c-b(2)-b(ii). “When the bat is past the plate, you must check it” – Mark Mothersbaugh, “The Check Swing.” Haha, classic… Wait, what?
1c-b(3). Okay seriously though. A check swing is when the batter makes a movement that, as determined by, when you do a move involving the baseball bat and plane of
It’s hilarious that both teams fans have had a controversial check swing in the 9th to complain about in back to back games
Just like the balk. Clear guidelines.
I don’t want to talk to a redditist
You mother fuckers always lying and getting me pissed
oh this is very good
ChatGPT rewrite the balk copypasta but for check swings. Make it funny and put in Reddit inside jokes.
go drink a faygo and take a deep breath
Huh?
i’m referencing an icp song not the balk copypasta
Not sure he went there, Jim!
Way too close
Nevermind, he went
It only looks like a swing from the top angle IMO, which isn’t actually above home plate. The camera is behind home plate. I don’t even know why they bothered putting a camera up there if that’s all we get from above.
Looking forward to when checked swings are challengeable
That sounds like hell
They’d just stick to the call on the field like when pass interference was reviewable in the NFL
It’s an ABS like system with a clearly defined angle that constitutes a swing, leaving umpire judgment out of it
Not sure if you were making a funny, I just think it’s a cool system lol
EEEEHHHHHHHH I DONT KNOW JIM.
My first thought was no. I was surprised they said he went even after seeing the side view
Now we need a JJ Watt equivalent
4-0 lead in the first and people crying about one swing. Rays had a huge cushion and many chances and couldn’t cash
They had a lead off double and couldn’t get him home. F off about a single questionable swing. Especially after that Jr freebie yesterday.
Say that again…
I am in awe of Aaron Ashby.
Been my favorite player to watch. The fact he can get you 9 outs while also acting as a closer is a cheat code.
I want to see my future reflected in his dome
Fat relievers and ones who wear glasses are the best kind.
Correct
😢
They’re not going to show a replay of the swing lol
They just did. I think it went past 180.
Just did. Went a fair bit over the plate
Yeah the 1b angle was suspect, above the plate was clear as day
That’s not above, that’s behind
At the end of the day, the 1B ump had the best view and he called what he saw.
The camera is literally not above home plate. How can you guys not see it with your eye balls lol. The camera is several degrees off to be judging a swing from
Yeah from the main front angle it didn’t look like it was a swing.
But that overhead showed it going past the plate. Obviously I’m a bit biased, and given how close it was I probably wouldn’t have called it a strike, but I get it
That overhead view is terrible because it’s behind the batter so it looks like the bat went further than it really did
It absolutely did not, that’s why they’re saying he didn’t on the broadcast
They can’t show a replay of the swing because he did not swing.
But yeah they are trying not to show it
Look, ignore my flair for a second
But why is everyone acting like this is egregious? It’s about as 50⁄50 call as you can get. It just feels everyone doesn’t like it because the game ends but you gotta call what you see or else you’ll be in an endless cycle of “does this call deserve to end the game?”
I’m fine with it. From the overhead angle it looks like a swing.
Just glad it’s over for a day. Playing you guys is exhausting.
The Rays are no walk in the park either. Anymore of this 9th inning drama and I may just croak
Fuckin a right, helluva team
Also it wasn’t in a vacuum. Contreras appealed a check swing seemingly 10 times that inning.
They were playing with fire. Swing the bat.
And he sold that one the hardest
They also denied some substantially more clear ones earlier, even if it’s not intentionally you kinda subconsciously tend to even the score a bit.
I just posted the same thing about most checked swings are 50⁄50. Hate the call if it goes against your team but like it if you do
It was 100% a swing
So you do get it
Imagine going from yesterday’s challenge showcase to a check swing that can’t be questioned. Crazy work
I know Contreras isn’t exactly an unbiased third party in this picture but if he didn’t think it was a swing, he deserves an Oscar for the sell job because he was in celebration mode before he even pointed to first.
The issue is that there’s really no such thing as a “correct” call since there’s no official definition.
This one is borderline but it’s defensible either way, nothing egregious
Make up call for non calling Caminero’s one yesterday
Like you can be upset about the 50⁄50 call but the 50⁄50 on Chourio scoring went the other way. All evens out
If the definition of a swing is offering at the ball, which it is, and not a specific angle, like so many in here seem to believe, this is a swing 8 days a week.
Hell of a curve ball man
Literally after a 90% run was taken off for us, a 50⁄50 call going our way is deserved
Take the first half inning out of the equation and this is a 5-0 blowout
Aaron Ashby the GOAT
He may actually be
Swing replays have to be the next step.
We need an actual rule before replay
The rule is “I guess so”
they use it in the minors, the bat just can’t cross the intersecting plane of the foul line. its typically how umps call it, but like tonights he just saw him offer and rung him up, the bat whip was to fast for the naked eye. I didnt like it, but it is the rule
I’d argue a definitive rule should be first.
they have it in the minors works great, def here next season
Probably is there is no line to review
They’re absolutely coming in the next couple years
Already being tested in minor leagues which usually precedes implementation in the MLB
same thing as ABS
It was a swing stay mad
I…I agree, it was a swing. And if it was a reviewable call with an agreed-upon rule, no one would be “mad.”
Swing challenges are already being tested and the only people against them have sub 90 IQs. One of them is going to reply to this with what the rule book defines as a swing but it’s just because their brain isn’t fully functioning.
Technically, by the rules, that was a swing because the umpire said it was. The rule leaves it up to umpire discretion so whatever the call is, is the correct call. Not saying I agree that that’s how the rules should be; I’m actually so supportive of the automated check swing system, but thems the rules currently
ya by the rule its an offer at a pitch, which is literally every pitch nowadays because you have to be geared up for 90-100. def look forward to a replay assist that uses the foul line as a determining factor if he crossed the plane or not. in my estimation with replay it would have been a ball, but whatever I got no skin in the game, just love baseball and wanted extra inning for more free baseball haha
Because the rule was written dozens of years ago. Cave man shit.
I agree. Crazy to have the official rule be “that guy standing 100 feet away has to make a pure judgement call on the batter’s intent or whatever”
Joe Davis is absolutely right: MLB needs check swing challenges automated ASAP. It’s absolutely ridiculous that something so common such as check swings is a hazy-ruled judgement call.
I do think it’s really strange, too, that the version they’re putting in place in MiLB next year has anything less than parallel with the 1B line a no-swing. That’s a blatant swing according to the rules I always went by (parallel to home plate).
Ump wanted to go home I guess
They flexed a little time yesterday so they could go home early today
They really don’t wanna show that side angle lol
Need to see that check swing…
Pretty close, could have gone either way.
The umps have been very good this series. Zero reason to doubt that call.
