Im having the general contractor updating my kitchen. It was dated so a lot of work was done. I got my own cabinet and countertop. I replaced the fan with recess lights. Right now it doesnt seem like the general contractor is covering the holes on the wall where the OTR microwave or old wall cabinets used to be. I am wondering if this is normal? This is my first house. I was under the impression that they would at least patch the whole and cover out the old light fixture and ceiling fan. This is my first home so I am not too familiar with general contractor. Is this normal?

If you’re paying for a kitchen reno, those should be included. If you’re just changing cabinets and counters, it’s negotiable.

I think it was my fault for not being clear? The contractor was the one referred to me by the cabinet guy. I told him what I want to do/taken out (things like take out the light fixture and the ceiling fan, and replace it with recess light). Honestly, i was just assuming that taking things out also means patching it like it was never there. Now I know, should have never assumed anything.I will reach out to the contractor to see how much more it would cost to do those as well

As a contractor, it’s our responsibility to point things out and clarify the job, and perhaps offer solutions (which may cost extra). It might be different if you are just hiring an electrician to install a light fixture. In that sense, he missed out on opportunities for more business on the same project.
