Pat Murphy: “what’s the purpose of a tie?”
Full context
Really doesn’t add much more context
Actually raises more questions
Pat just wanted a chance to roast ties
“I see you’re holding a pen. Now let’s take a minute to talk about pens…”
“That’s awesome. Let’s talk about that.” has got to be the first phrase you learn in charisma 101
I need this man in a blunt circle.
Gosh I love how he is a professional yapper like me
dudes just be saying shit
He mentioned Christian Brothers Academy and I went “eh, there’s probably a few of those in the U.S.”
Looked him up and nope, it’s the one in my city.
TIL Pat Murphy is from Syracuse haha
Ohhh, now I get it.
He’s the best manager in terms of being relatable
Pat Murphy said every morning he writes the lineup for the day on a napkin and sends it in. Has done it for all 171 games this season.
At this rate you can’t change it.
True. He ran out of napkins long ago.
By “sends it in” I’m picturing a bicycle courier delivering it from his house to the stadium.
Having worked as a bike messenger that’s a tag I would never stop talking about
Carrier pigeon
Hey, you can’t argue with results.
I will die for this man
I’m kind of shocked there isn’t a rule against such a thing tbh, but I’m all for it.
Definitely feels like the most Midwestern dad, so that’s perfect for a team like the Brewers
First couple sentences was like, wtf? Ties? Then I realized, he meant the sartorial version.
Had the same thought, except without the word “sartorial,” which I’d heard but never learned, and have now looked up! What a day!
Same here. Learned a new word, which is crazy because I feel like I already know a lot of words. Like seriously a lot….idk…..300 words? Maybe more than that fr
lol I know you’re kidding, but I make a point to look up the definition of each word I come across that I don’t already know, and this is a new one for me as well! I’ve been doing this for like 15 years and I can’t tell you how much it’s improved my vocabulary. MacOS makes it really easy, you can use the 3 finger tap gesture on the trackpad to look them up in one second.]
Does fr count as 1, 2, or 3 words?
I think that depends on whether you consider it an abbreviation or an initialism. If it’s an abbreviation then it’s one word, if it’s an initialism then it’s zero words.
Calm down with all the words man your brain is gonna start leaking
Why waste time say lot word, when few word do trick?
Me know loads of words… parachute… pho-a-graph… spaghetti…

Whoa. I quote this all the time. You are very classy. You and I should like hang out some time
I can count to 9…that’s like 17 words..right?
Mmmm yes, sartorial, I know that word 🙂↕️
GOB’s not on board
Oh, yes, I love that word because of the old Harold Cosell clips. I need more sartorial elegance.
Howard
I was so ready to curse Manfred for some rule change nonsense.
No chance you know the word sartorial and didn’t immediately pick up on what he was talking about
Ballgame can’t end in a tie!
Same, I was also confused. I read it, saw the subreddit (thinking it was NFL or NHL), got confused, and then it hit me after a bit. But now that I’m on the same page, I agree that ties in sports and ties in fashion are both unnecessary.
Yeah, I thought someone was asking him a soccer question at first.
I thought that maybe he was complaining about the ASG tie from years ago.
I mean, it’s a fair question all around. Why do we accept ties in the outcome of sports games?
We accept ties when the alternatives aren’t preferable. Because the choices are basically:
Continue playing until there’s a winner, or
A strange final contest completely separate from the game, like penalty kicks in soccer.
1 isn’t ideal when the game extends so long that quality of play suffers, and/or risk of injury significantly increases. The juice is really only worth the squeeze in a playoff format.
2 isn’t ideal either because the game gets decided by something that only exists within the game to settle tiebreakers. They also tend to be something of a crapshoot, which offends fans who feel like the winner should always be the better team and not whoever won the proverbial coin flip.
I don’t follow soccer but they feel backwards. Penalty kicks decide the most important games but it’s not acceptable for normal games?
Ties aren’t really a big deal in soccer. It’s a really physically demanding game that makes continuous overtime practically impossible, and sometimes the teams are just evenly matched. Fans aren’t conditioned to want an extra mini-contest just to say one of the teams is the winner.
Penalties are a last ditch resort when a winner must be declared (usually in a tournament format), and even then it’s not the only one they use, depending on the league. Sometimes they replay the match in the event of a tie, or they do a 2 game playoff (each team gets a home game) and if they split or tie both, the winner is whoever scored the most away goals. It can vary wildly from one league to the next.
Ties cover your buttons. Never understood why we care about that.
People don’t like it when you push their buttons. So if you cover up your buttons with a tie, no one will push your buttons because they won’t know you have buttons on you.
I can’t believe that guy didn’t know that.
But then what’s the point of a bow tie?
Bowties are a step up in formality from neckties, and are traditionally worn with the tuxedo. Tuxedo shirts usually have a blind button closure, so you’re not showing your buttons anyway.
“Protect ya neck”- Wu-Tang Clan
Just cover the top button
Indicates that someone is an easy target for bullying.
To make it easier for Hannah Barbera to animate facial expressions
To shoot arrows out your neck
I had heard that “bow ties are cool”. Though this person also said that fezes are cool so really who knows.
I’m pretty sure they used to literally tie a top together and keep it from falling down
I looked it up and you’re correct. The precursor to the modern tie is a cravat, which was part of the french military uniform. It kept the top of your shirt tied and could also be used to cover your mouth from dust and smoke. They look different though, closer to a scarf. They eventually became part of fashion and evolved into what we have today.
If ties evolved from cravats, then why do cravats still exist? Checkmate, atheists.
Croatian military originally. Thus the name “cravat” from “Croatian”
Then why do bolos exist?
To show a little button, as a slutty treat
Stupid sexy bolos.
So apparently Texans just dress like whores now?
Always have. Have you seen our chaps?
Your lack of decorum is shocking. You can’t just be up there showing your buttons in public.
A DISGUSTING ACT
“Tradition” dictates one covers the “working” parts of your attire. Vestige of Victorian England
Has nothing to do with buttons esp since they’re often worn UNDER buttons of a vest. It’s just a goofy fashion thing that has lasted a long time for whatever reason. A French king wore some kind of neckwear a few hundred years ago and it caught on.
It was Louis XIV, the Sun King, also known for the place of Versailles, his support for and participation in ballet, and popularizing high heels. So probably not Murph’s style generally.
But the French actually borrowed the tie from Croatian mercenaries. Male fashion always goes back to the military, even the stuff you wouldn’t expect.
Borrowed it including the name. The French cravat (and thus also German Krawatte) comes from Croat.
It’s crazy how many of our traditions can be traced back in some way to Louis XIV
Really it’s more just because collared shirts look weird if you button them all the way without something covering the tie button
I thought they were for cool Jackie Chan fighting sequences.
I suspect what’s written as “SO” is supposed to be “Esso”, the name of a gas station chain (now owned by Exxon Mobil)
Could also just be S.O. aka Standard Oil (which Esso/Exxon came from). Since it would’ve been late 70s. “Geno”, though, I’m unfamiliar with.
Could be I suppose. I only ever knew them as Esso but I guess there were some Standard locations that used S.O.
I figured that “Geno” was a person’s name.
Aye yo Geno!
I ran into Esso in a crossword for the first time the other day, and lots of people in the comments were talking about how they only know it from crosswords! (And then I saw an ad for it on the SportsNet stream last night and was all excited to see my crossword word in real life.)
Are you a Canadian Padres fan?
No, I just stumbled on the SportsNet stream online and found the international broadcast more enjoyable than the US one. (And as a female baseball fan, cute Esso ads are much nicer than having to see Sydney Sweeney naked again.)
NYT loves using the word Esso as a solution
“Esso” actually comes from “S.O.”, which was Standard Oil.
youre right.
I wonder if he’s seen 19th century baseball uniforms? (This is the 1882 New York Metropolitans).
Not all teams wore ties, but some did!
Another example, the 1889 Brooklyn Bridegrooms.
just wife guys loving ties
Amazing how the moustache has died as a fashion item.
It seems to have declined almost exactly in time with the required hat dying out.
It’s coming back!
Henderson, The brewers starter tonight, was rocking one.
I feel like images from the 1880s do a better job proving Pat’s point than not.
We have come a long way since then. The entire game of baseball has changed since then. I think in the 1880s if you caught a ball on one bounce it was still an out.
Can’t use the 1880s to defend wearing a tie. We were basically a different planet then.
You’re off by two decades. The one bounce out rule was eliminated in the early 1860s.
Oh, I’m not defending it, just pointing it out that even baseball players wore them on the field once.
Definitely better without them.
Wear a tie or don’t wear a tie. Some people like the way it looks, it isn’t some utilitarian article of clothing. Are we really only going to wear stuff that has an established function or “point”? I think Pat’s point is only relevant if you are being forced to wear a tie against your will, and how many jobs are even doing that nowadays? I can only think of a few where daily attire includes a tie, and even then, it isn’t the entire industry requiring that across the board.
Look at those two squares without a mustache.
Fuckin’ guys look sharp
I will never understand how people back in the day wore wool suits every goddamn day all year long with no air conditioning.
That’s weird but it is what it is.
Nathan Fielder standing there in the back like “and y’all are being real right now?”
Pat from New Berlin, thanks for the call!
GO BRELWERS! LET’S FU… click
Ok, next caller…
The tie is pretty much the only opportunity for men to have some fun when wearing formal wear.
For real, formal wear for men has become so bland and uniform
Yall are missing out on colored suits.
Don’t have to go crazy pink or yellow but a burgundy, sage, tan, you got lots of options to mix it up.
There are a very small things you can do with fit and look and cut, though. Color or pattern is just playing with an existing format.
Compare it to women’s formal wear, the variety that is acceptable in formal situations is wild. Men are basically working with the little black dress comparatively.
Blue suits are dope
tan
But if you wear a tan suit you’ll get accused of ruining america.
Can I then repeat the whole rant but with “formal wear” substituted for “ties”? Because this really seems like it’s simply reiterating the problem.
Also, if just looks better. Like a complete look.
I sometimes wear no tie, but if the shirt fits well around the collar (so I don’t feel choked when the button is notched), I’d much rather have a tie than not. It’s sort of like a belt. I don’t always need a belt, especially if the pants fit properly, but the belt just makes it look better overall.
I hate wearing ties but definitely see the point of them.
If I’m having someone handling my investments/retirement, a tie doesn’t change their acumen but it pleases me to know they are willing to go through extra effort to look presentable.
maybe it’s just me but I see literally zero difference in presentability between someone dressed up with a tie and someone dressed up without one. it isn’t 1990 anymore
I’m with Pat on this.
Pat can you explain a balk next
I was watching the game last night with my girlfriend and she said Pat Murphy is fine as fuck. That’s all I got here.
Better watch out he ain’t afraid to make babies in his elder years
Pat “Bill Belichick” Murphy
Good comparison lol
She is correct
Ties are the bastardization of a scarf once worn by eastern European mercenaries that the aristocrats of the 17th century liked so much they started to cop the style. Eventually it morphed into the more sleek version we have today.
They don’t really serve a purpose
crazy how far i had to scroll to find someone giving the real historical answer. i believe the original scarf served some practical purpose, like being used to cover the face from smoke on a battlefield. eventually they did get adopted further West and not for their practicality, but they signaled status. flashy, expensive things with little purpose will always be a status symbol.
Yea I get it but once you go down this route you start coming up with stupid questions like why do I have to wear pants at work
Obviously he already told us. You wear pants at work to store your spare pancakes
‘Pantcakes’, if you will.
Acting like there’s really a purpose to wearing pants at work. Would my coworkers really be offended to see my calf muscles? Whose to say I can’t wear shorts, or capris, or a just thong?
I support you doing all of these things.
Pants keep you warm, ties dont
Yeah, but I’m a chronically warm person. I wish I didn’t have to wear pants due to social norms. So keeping me warm is actually a negative
I knew a Midwesterner was gonna come in and say the equivalent of I wear shorts when it’s 20° out
I don’t because of social norms. But back in my high school and college days, yeah.
Definitely walked to class in shorts and a hoodie in sub-freezing temps plenty of times.
yeah I find these questions vaguely obnoxious. fashion has never revolved around strict practicality, and it’s not insightful to point that out. “what purpose do earings serve, huh?” “why should I wear a belt to an interview, my pants stay up just fine?” “why can’t I wear sweats and a t-shirt to my wedding?”
He wasn’t talking about purpose. He was saying why is it the custom. Why do we still do this shit.
“But what’s the purpose of a tie?”
Yeah as in why the fuck do we wear them
Don’t you hate pants?
Word for word what I said to my Dad getting dressed for a wedding when I was 8
This is the type of manager you want. No matter what stupid shit reporters try bringing up you can wax poetic about whatever irrelevant topic to hold all the attention.
I wanna know what reporter asked that stupid question.
Mike Leach core
The ‘I’ll bs about anything you dare to bring up to avoid saying anything relevant to why we’re actually here’ is a dying interview art
Neckties are descended from cravats, which are like ascots or bibs. We think initially they were used as a napkin, or to hide soil on your shirt, but pretty quickly became fashion statements. They have (de?)evolved into the smaller and less complex modern necktie which is purely decorative. It’s an opportunity for a little color or flair for men’s fashion.
Ken Rosenthal interviewing Pat Murphy
Pat Murphy looking at his bow tie 😠😡🤬
I wore a tie all the way through high school - and then got a job that would Traditionally require a suit and tie and I’ve completely abandoned both except for in the most formal of circumstances - cause I agree - what’s the point?
Only reason I kind of like them (but don’t wear them often) is I learned to tie a strong knot and enjoy laughing at my friends poor attempts at any kind of knot
What is the point of anything? What’s the point of baseball? Let’s embrace a bit of whimsy in this life. Perhaps that’s been the point all along.
Ties are the opposite of whimsy
I like wearing ties. He doesn’t. Both opinions are valid.
Yeah but what’s not valid is the expectation to wear one just because of your job
Well now I’m reading about the history of ties, thanks Pat
They just showed up to yell about neckwear for five minutes, classic baseball manager energy.
I thought he was talking about the all star game ending in a tie or maybe draws in soccer. Idk wtf I just read. But Pat Murphy is a gem
Well I suppose there are no ties in baseball
No but for real what’s with a tie being required for men’s dress clothing
Shirt belt. Don’t want your collar falling below your clavical. That would be vulgar.
FREE THE CLAVICALS
Isn’t clavical that dude that hits himself with a hammer while mewing?
See I have a really nice neck line that should be in a tank top with mustard stains not all strapped up with polyester, yuck.
For utility wear, none. For dress clothing, it fills the empty space between the coat lapels and occasionally adds flair/style. I don’t care for shirts buttoned all the way to the neck unless a tie is worn—and an unbuttoned shirt tends to look more casual.
Having said all that, I’d prefer to wear shorts and t shirt daily.
I don’t like your logic here and I refuse to follow it we need something new
We can not like things all we want but good luck if you enter a traditional field for employment like law.
It looks good? Covers the buttons, draws a nice line from neck to waist.
No tie and top button unbuttoned. I don’t need that flappy shit getting in my way all day.
Tie clip brother. Your accessory needs an accessory
Does it look good? Or have you been conditioned to think that? Like a nice shirt and sport coat looks just fine no tie or white button up collar needed.
I think they look cool ¯_(ツ)_/¯But maybe it is conditioning
Buttons used to be not very straight, which was ugly.
Everything you think you have been conditioned to think. Unless you’re insane. Otherwise, yeah, that’s how language acquisition works.
Torn between “ties are fucking stupid and unnecessary” and “ooh, I like the paisley on that one, I know exactly what shirt it would go with”
They feel good on for like ten minutes and then I feel like Kunta Kinte and want out
Well if we didn’t have ties then where would we put our tie clips? Answer that smart guy
Asking the real questions
Now I imagine Pat going off on wild tangents like these when players are asking for pointers to improve their game
Imagine the translator trying to make sense of it for the Spanish speakers
Now that I think about it, we really need a game where Murphy is in the booth with Kruk
There would be way too many shower thoughts
