Blake Griffin on NBA studio shows: “The bar was kinda low… A lot of people have come up to us: ‘It’s so great that you talk basketball.’ That should be the most obvious thing you talk about.”
It’s really a breath of fresh air after years of constant ESPN goat debates and Inside the NBA not even watching the games.
Look at all of our analyst sleeping! You can’t believe how little we give a shit about basketball here at inside the NBA! We are a quirky show!
Now let’s get uncomfortably mad at each other because we’re all cantankerous old men with thin skins!
What do you mean someone we didn’t play against could be better than someone we played against?!?!?!
Now someone find us an insufferable dingus to give a boatload of cash to!
BAH GAWD, THAT’S DRAYMOND GREEN’S MUSIC!!!
espn literally showed a clip last night of chuck not being able to remember what team a dude played for, that they had talked about the night before and played it off for laughs. because its apparently really funny that the guys they are paying millions to talk about basketball are so checked out that they literally cant remember what they had talked about 15 hours before hand.
Are we pretending like Inside the NBA isn’t funny? They aren’t at their peak anymore, that happened a few years ago before online analysis really blasted off and the NBA fully adopted clip culture, but they are still pretty funny and their reputation buys them a few years to ride off into the sunset.
Inside the NBA is more “guys sitting on the couch watching the game” style, which is genuinely enjoyable. Just because The Stepback is also an enjoyable format doesnt take away from Inside The NBA, both formats can co-exist at once.
I never thought I’d see the day where people are taking “Who he play for” seriously
It’s entertainment, and it’s very entertaining. Not every product needs to be everything for everyone.
If you are talking about the clip of the midle - end of bench players he didnt know, that was fucking hilarious. Some things can just be for fun, its not a mockery to me that Chuck doesn’t remember who Aaron Wiggins plays for lol. But they should know starters - 7th men very well and they don’t.
At least it’s better than politicians and judges doing it. I have no idea why geriatrics are in charge of everything.
And you couldn’t name who a single player they mentioned played for either lol. Keep crying
remember stephen a smith playing solitaire during the finals….
Like r/nba actually watches games 😂😂😂😂😂
I knew nobody was going to watch the video. Blake even makes mention about inside the Nba is exempt in his book because (his words) it’s the best sports/best comedy show.
But gotta shoehorn in your complain for upvotes.
Why would it be exempt when it’s the primary culprit of exactly what Blake’s calling out?
This is probably gonna be the last season of “The Inside Guys” as we know them, but I’m just gonna stick with clips. The show is great comedy, but I want actual basketball analysis. Couple years back, my tweet got shown on TNT jokingly calling out Chuck not actually watching games
Because (his words) it’s the greatest show in sports, not only sport, comedy too.
I did watch the video, and am allowed to disagree. Shocker, that’s how opinions work!
You’d think you’d mention that bit then huh.
They expressed their own opinion. They didn’t say they were repeating Blake Griffin’s opinion.
That sounds like a you problem tbh
This is Blake just covering his ass.
Amazon quickly became my favorite sports coverage last year. I wish they got Jeremy Lin instead of ESPN.
I like Inside though for the comedy and “hottakes” from Chuck, etc.
ESPN though just sucks ass. I have no time for Stephen A, the loud mouth dummy he is.
Blake Griffin is smart obviously but not just smart he’s extremely good at picking and choosing what he’s going to say before he says it while also being honest and not coming off as a dickhead. And the best part about all of that is he doesn’t even have to think about it.
He’s super natural at this. He’s just a natural speaker though. It’s just awesome
Pablo glazed Blake so hard after that episode, and it honestly felt deserved. You can tell the guy has seriously good charisma.
Pablo lived through working for ESPN and Lebatard. He recognizes actual talent.
Could see that while he was in the league. He has very strong comedic timing and is a natural magnetic speaker. Plus I’m not super familiar with his post NBA career but I thought I remember him getting into some stand up and maybe acting? A good way to polish those qualities.
He was hilarious in his Broad City episode.
Yeah I rmr he got into standup one off-season when he was with the Clippers. Turns out he’s actually funny. What a talented dude lol
Blake Griffin, famous intelligent graduate from Oklahoma education
True unicorn
I believe he was homeschooled at least until High School.
I just remember watching him and his brother and play in high school
Also knocked up a porn star lmao
Sex is a helluva drug
That was an internet joke bc the kid looked like him. It’s supposedly Bruce Brown’s.
The Caleb interview with him was amazing, he, Josh Allen and Antman are perfect for that show.
Darrel Drain?
Blake Griffin 🤝 Jaylen Brown
“The bar is fucking low”
while this is true, everyone also loved “police presence” and “big ol women” when the other crew was memeing about it. the fanbase appreciates the entertainment spectrum increasing, and it’s not a choice
I like Barkley. I don’t want all analysts to be like him, though.
I like Barkley because he’s funny and entertaining. I like Blake Griffin because he’s insightful and has good points. Guys who are there to just say stupid shit for rage-baiting and engagement bait can get out like Perkins and SAS.
Don’t worry they can’t be like him, if I had to say who is close to his archetype , raw, alil unhinged and funny, praise and criticism would be Richard Jefferson. I think he has that “IT” factor
He is pretty good.
The biggest quality Barkley has is that he also just seems like a wonderful human being and I guess not everyone can be that way.
Jefferson is adequate but I don’t remember learning anything new about basketball from him or any other color commentator… like ever. There are no John maddens in nba broadcasting
Both better than what ESPN had before with Stephen a Smith. Which was neither entertaining or informative
Yeah, Blake called out how awesome Inside the NBA was.
He also called out how annoying the half assed “this guy needs to work harder or play better” commentary that other shows mail it in on.
Did you even watch the 2 minute video?
And the beautiful part is he did it in a way where he described how he analyzes a player’s performance.
They don’t have to be assholes. Rather they can be critical of certain things for a point where they could improve.
“I think those were some Cardi D’s” is an all-timer.”
Those guys used to offer some basketball takes as well though. Now its just a comedy show
That’s fine, because that’s their schtick. They invented their on genre, and are unique. If someone else comes in trying to be them, they’re probably going to fail. They need to do something else.
It’s almost as if there are different demographics watching these shows at the same time…
Inside just became a show that craps on the current game. The show has run its course.
The show has run its course.
The last episode of “Who He Play For” proves you wrong, I think.
forreal. That had me crying
Chemistry like that will never go out of style
Having gotten to the point where Reddit hates inside the nba is maybe a sign it’s just time for me to not log on here anymore lol. It’s one of my all time favorite shows and I still love it.
I really feel like they’ve infected fans with so much nonsense like “everyone plays the same”. Barkley is a legitimately funny guy, but no thanks.
Speak for yourself. I’ll take Inside the nba over boring ass trash prime and nbc any day of my the week
It was funny but its ran its course. Also these guys became to grumpy and too full of themselves. Time to Hang it up
Everyone didn’t love it. Casuals who have the game on in the background while scrolling social media loved it
Nobody has watched Inside the NBA for hard hitting analysis for a decade+. It’s successful for a reason
Im not a casual and i loved it
Blake Griffin is also funny though. You can make the jokes and then also not say idiotic basketball takes yk
This is a general complaint but media does need to stay segregated. Talk shows can be gossip, hot takes, etc. But studio shows before and after the game should be more on the nose
Wtf
Cheep ai
If you hate blue states shouldn’t you be against the 14th amendment?
I’m dyslexic
You’re also an idiot.
Hes not wrong.
It happens in any sport, whenever someone new comes along and does something different or has a fresh take they’re seen as a breath of fresh air… then they have to keep doing the show every week and fall into caricatures of themselves because they’ve run out of stuff to say.
It’s even more true with podcasts. Players come in, tell their stories, but after they’ve told them and have to invent their own horseshit to keep things interesting, it sucks. Only a handful people on earth can do it for a living for real, it takes real talent, but every NBA player seem to think they can do it. People like Joe Rogan get around being kinda boring by having guests on and doing basically interviews, being good at asking questions. But there are only a handful Conan O’Briens out there on earth.
Even Jeff Teague has gotten stale, and he’s like the best out there.
Yeah Club 520 still has great moments but it’s really more the guest stuff now. I think Teague has pretty much already told every funny story he has.
How do you become a caricature when you’re just talking about basketball and not hot takes
The Gary Neville Effect
Depressing watching Roy Keane fail as a manager and having to come up with a different way to say ‘he should be doing his job!’ Every week
How do you run out of stuff to say when there’s new games every day?
Broadcasters seem to forget your “hot take” requires actual lines of reasoning to justify it. Stephon Castle gets an unnecessary foul and suddenly he’s a no good thug.
Kellerman was great at coming up with hot takes that seemed outrageous, but were rather sensible when he explained himself.
Nick Wright, once you internally scale back his LeBron and Chiefs love, also knows how to give informed hot takes.
Chuck forgot who played for what team a minute after being told the answers and that’s some of the best TV I’ve seen in my life
THREE TRIES
IN A ROW
I was dying
I think what has started to bug me is during sports playoffs, when we’re watching these nationally televised games, is these announcers that don’t have a rapport with each other just default to reheating the same discussions year after year.
Like, mlb playoffs, wildcards, they were not talking about the players on the field, or the teams, at all. They were debating the concept of the wildcard series for the 10th time and how many teams get into the playoffs, which like…were pretty happy with the setup at this point. I don’t want to hear that debated anymore. I’d rather you talk about just anything else.
One of the best parts of the Prime shows is they actually talk schemes and strategy not just bullshit like “KD needs to step up in the second half!”
Atleast thats still talking about baseball
If i have to hear Mike Breen tell another anecdote about how good of friends two players are I’ll end myself.
You know these two, they trained down in Miami together in the off season–BANG! Down goes another one. RIP avroLancaster BPR1
I hear but the majority of listeners are casuals. We have to realize that we’re the 10% of nfl followers. The broadcast is presented for someone watching a football game for the first time. Not for the avid fans. We’re going to watch regardless
You should watch surfing lol. Announcers just talk about it the most random shit the entire time
Pro road cycling commentators: “Allow me to introduce myself”
Feel like that comes with the territory though lol
I mean sort of, still have a job to do
Strider is goat
The contrast between basketball broadcasters and other sports is so stark.
IMO American football is even worse
Football is definitely biased but at least they talk about the sport. Chuck has been at this for decades now and he’s more known for his takes on San Antonio women than his opinions on basketball lol
I think this is a minority opinion. NFL coverage is much better at promoting and praising the current generation of players and the quality of the game. Nobody says players like Derek Henry or Christian McCaffery wouldn’t be as good if they had to play in a different era. There also isn’t constant complaining about how the regular season doesn’t matter and how there are too many games.
Why talk about basketball when you could discuss LeBron vs MJ goat debates daily for 20 years
I mean that’s the problem - that’s what people tune in for.
I always watch Amazon’s content at this point. I just wish the app didn’t suck so much - even on Apple TV.
That’s not even a discussion. That’s c*ck sucking
Man, Blake Griffin is great. As a long time Clipper fan, he’s easily one of my favorite players ever. Getting to see him have this second life as a media personality is funny because it was clear as day that’s where he would end up. Dude just has the perfect combo of personality/charisma/knowledge/experience to make him perfect for something like that.
The Prime show has genuinely been a breath of fresh air. They hit the perfect balance of professional and casual. Not in stuffy full suits, but not in the sloppy attire and slouchy couches that NBATV has on that one show (forgot the name).
It’s wild to me that Blake is legitimately half black. Like, this dude’s dad is black black, but he basically came out the chute fully ginger. Genetics is insane.
He’s half Haitian, the first independent black nation in the world. But you’d have never guessed it cause his other genes just took over in expression 😂
Honestly invalidated himself by giving a free pass to the tnt guys who are one of the biggest perpetuators of what he is critiquing. Maybe once they were providing good, beyond-the-surface analysis but they are not doing that now (and in the recent).
Honestly while true, their chemistry is second to none and they still make me laugh my ass off from time to time.
Kenny’s pictures when they run to the board is still somewhat insightful at times, but I just watch them for entertainment and for them to react to highlights instead of actual analysis
Dog Shit ESPN is nothin but FanDuel odds and a loud dumb fuck repeating his hot take of the day several times over while other dumb fucks try to talk about FanDuel odds.
i miss JJ Reddick’s commentary.
I hope he gets back into broadcasting one day.
It’s funny that he says not the TNT guys when shaq and Charles basically just say what he was talking about and barely watch the games
He’s a breath of fresh fart in this terrible sports broadcast landscape.
While I would love more basketball talk and better-quality basketball talk, it’s important to note that we receive the content that the masses want. Look at the posts that are the top r/nba posts of the last week. Highlight plays, post-game threads (especially when a marquee team loses), drama posts, lowlights (especially when a marquee player does poorly), comedy posts, political-adjacent posts…
There are rarely popular r/nba posts about basketball x’s and o’s, in-depth team building discussions, big-picture stuff. I know r/nbadiscussion is better about that but isn’t that exactly the point? r/nba is magnitudes bigger than r/nbadiscussion and the masses want the drama, comedy, quickly digestable highlights/lowlights etc. We get what we generally want.
Inside is so overrated, like they don’t even talk basketball a lot of the times. Miss opencourt they need to bring that back.
Inside has been shit to me ever since Shaq basically bullied JaVale McGee, and chuck kept whining about the Warriors being a jump shooting team that would never win a championship.
I don’t need people to be blind cheerleaders for the NBA, but with the Amazon crew we have a panel that actually likes basketball and want to sell the viewer on why they should care, too. I’m tired of this culture of arguing over rankings, who the GOAT is, and why rings apparently matter so much.
I can’t think of many other major sports, outside of the NBA and the UFC, where the discourse is consistently negative and cynical all the time, among both media and fans.
Nobody is watching Inside for valid NBA points. It’s just a comedy show
Can’t say I find it very funny these days.
