In the zone, you can see it in his eyes.
Man was locked in tonight from the very first pitch.
Man is on a mission
It’s been the whole playoffs
Can there be an mvp award for the whole playoff run WS included ? This guy has been absolutely insane
Conn Smythe Contreras
Him and Ashby both deserve something, they’ve been absolutely locked in from game 1 through now.
I mean there’s an argument for Aaron Ashby, too
An absolute piss missile to third, holding his hand up waiting for the ump to to call ball, the “I fucking told u” head shake on the second challenge, a throw so perfect to second Pratt just holds his glove for the double play, and then the RBI to top it off. Old Wild Bill is LOCKED IN!
i fckin laughed so hard at the head shake after the one challenge
I love when a pitch just misses and you can see him think about it for a second before throwing the ball back. Big Bill knows the strike zone better than the back of his own hand.
shits honestly impressive imo. some catchers are definitely better then others at challenging
I understand that head shake, these challenges are high stakes and he had to risk one on a ball that was 75% in the zone
My favorite part though was a pitch or two later that was a ball that was kind of close and you could see Wild Bill thinking about it. The ump looked down at him like “I fucking dare you”
Challenges in the playoffs is fucking huge. It’s great to finally have the right human element be part of the game
Just gonna say, as much as I like this system more previous way also had a version of the right human element, at least as I was coached. Part of being a good hitter is supposed to be adjusting to the zone and more importantly dealing and processing unfair calls, that’s a form of mental strength that’s supposed to be demanded and trained by the sport.
Related side thing, I’m curious/worried how ABS is going to impact LL. We are years if not decades away from anything remotely like ABS being applied to LL and kids are going to grow up watching a MLB with a core element that does not and cannot exist for them and hits directly at the fairness element that is vital for youth sports development. It’s already bad, we’re going to have kids tapping helmets at volunteer umps and fundamentally not understanding why that’s wrong.
NFL has had replay review for over 20 years, and prep football has managed without it over that time
Valid point, though I’m not sure I’d say that youth football is great example of a healthy youth sports system, never heard that complaint.
The second paragraph I understand (though coaches should be able to sort this out the way they do in other sports) but the first paragraph I don’t understand at all.
Why would we not want the correct calls just because we didn’t have them in the past? Adjusting to an umps zone was terrible and it only happened because there was no better system. Now there is a better system, and it would be foolish not to use it in the name of “tradition.”
Games evolve over time, and in this case, it’s for the better
I started off saying I do like this more, because it retains that skill while also adding in the moment element of judging the value of a wrong call. This is better, to repeat myself. But it’s just a matter of disagreement, same as I used to love players who adjusted their stance to the pitcher’s approach I liked players who were good at figuring out the zone and working with it, that’s an invisible skill. Twins fan, Rod Carew was my dad’s favorite player, fairly simple answer really.
So, so many fans are clamoring for the old school ways of playing and talking up pitchers like Maddux and baserunners like Rickey while also insisting that baseball be played with clinical, video game like accuracy. It’s discordant to me, I’ll admit that it’s an old man take, I’m old now, that’s all my takes. I hope everyone else gets here too.
In this post-season the most dynamic ABs was a dude seeing pitches well and fouling off marginal ones, that exact skill is what I’m talking about. That last 1% of being able to adjust in the moment. That’s exactly what people seem to want from players yet demand systems that limit how impressive that skill can actually be.
This reaks of “well I paid MY student loans so you should too!!”
See, that’s just lazy, you could have picked from a dozen other common boomer memes but you picked one that has nothing to do with this, you’re using a personal responsibility stereotype meme to apply to something closer to ‘Preferring a manual transmission’ or ‘hand-tool wood working’ type thinking. It’s really not that hard, this is a fairly easy stance to attack and you whiffed it.
This is nonsensical. If kids have the “element” of adjusting to the umps zone, then how the fuck will it be MORE challenging for them to…adjust ONE TIME to the actual zone lmao.
If umps had a degree of consistency to their insane fuck ups you made up fantasy world would exist.
Wild fckn Bill. Superstar
That trade in ‘21 to bring him on board is gonna go down as one of the all time greatest
As a Braves fan I’m not particularly fond of it
As an A’s fan. I have nothing to say. What a generational blunder .
Both of his throws were right on the money, bazooka arm
Contreras arguably the best catcher in the game
not arguably. hands down is the best catcher
Man I know his team isn’t great but this is unbelievable Moreno erasure.
Dingler has a case as well and Jensen had an incredible rookie season and could easily be in the mix next year (arguably already is)
Moreno right there too
He wants this championship BAD.
He is gonna personally see it happens
Aw I miss him :( But glad he’s killing it with the brewers
I mean he would have been a DH with you guys otherwise. :/
Yeah he really became a much much better catcher with yall. Unsurprisingly of course, yall have a way with catchers.
They NEED to pay him 💰
How AA gave up on this guy so early…I’ll never know. So far proving to be easily the worst trade we’ve made this decade, unless Murphy really gets his act together.
At least he’s helping the Brewers and not the Tax Fraudgers.
He’s a joy to watch. If they win, and he keeps this up, this run he’s on will go down as one of the greatest postseason runs by a catcher ever.
I miss Wild Bill 🥹
absolute garbage trade from the beginning smh. AA one of the most overrated GMs
The number of times he had his challenge hand locked and loaded on dotted strikes just in case the ump called it a ball was impressive.
all of his challenges have been SO good
Not only does he know they are strikes, he knows the ump is gonna call them a ball before he says it.
He has been so fun to watch during the playoffs.
Such a good player and his energy and attitude are infectious.
Contreras has been the unsung hero of the brewers playoff run so far
Unsung???
Yea Pretty sure he’s been singing at the top of his lungs since the Braves traded him lol
I know he’s gotten praise, I just mean the media focus imo has been on some of the other players, esp pitching staff, bauers and mitchell
Hes most definitely sung
We been singin. Trust me we been singin
Just perfect throws each time.
His blocking in the ninth literally saved the win. Think I remember him actually CATCHING a ball in the dirt way over first base side of the plate. Any passed ball would have tied the game or worse.
Wild Bill be gunning for the WS MVP fr
Wtf is this face swapped shit
It’s making me uncomfortable.
Dominated the CS too. Bauers was great but I was dumbfounded that Contreras wasn’t the MVP
Idk it’s pretty easy to give it to Bauers for those at bats. They were generational.
There’s multiple people who you could reasonably give it to but Bauers makes perfect sense.
Those two at bats took out a Cy Young and a World Series mvp - I don’t have any issue with Bauers winning it
Ashby was the only other player up for consideration IMHO.
Nah, Contreras was in the running. He probably gets dinged a little because so much of what he’s doing isn’t obvious (ABS challenges, calling games, preventing wild pitches) but his play was clearly a step above the average. Any one of the three were worthy candidates.
I wouldn’t go so far as to say dumbfounded. There were at least 3 MVP options I would have understood.
Nobody better
Cornerstone of this playoff run
