Johnson: We’ll light up the Hoan Bridge in your team’s colors.

Nevermind the fact that the team colors are almost a perfect match.

Tampa would light up their bridges, but florida made it illegal to light up bridges in any colors except for red white and blue 😂

It’s not! There are specific holidays with exceptions, but it’s a short list and should not shock you it doesn’t include stuff like juneteenth and pride. There’s some version of a local event exception but idk how it works, they might need to put in requests ahead of time and I think it’s more for big annual events over one-offs like this anyway.

Visited Milwaukee for a long weekend a couple years ago to catch the Cards there and was highly impressed with the city.

Pro-tip: take one of the bar shuttles to the game. They are “free” with the purchase of a couple beers. The Brewer fans offered me some good-natured ribbing while we commiserated over the Cubs.

This is super fun but - dumb question from someone who doesn’t know Florida very well. Why is it St. Petersburg’s Mayor that’s involved & not Tampa Bay’s?

I_am_photo | TEX

28 | 18 hours ago

Tampa Bay is the name of the bay and the stadium is in St. Pete. I remember this came up when talking about why they have low ticket sells since if you live in Tampa you have to cross a bridge to get to the game and apparently it’s annoying to do.

MrBadMeow | TB

6 | 15 hours ago

As a Tampa native. Most people here call it the “Greater Tampa Bay Area”. Like Clearwater, St.Pete etc… it covers several counties. Even like Land o lakes and Brandon are all considered Tampa. And the whole “crossing a bridge” issue is really not an issue. You have to drive over a bridge that takes 15 mins. Big whoop.

CourtneyDN | LAA

WabbitFire | MIL

xelduderinox | TB

6 | 15 hours ago

It’s a combination of the majority of the metro area living far away, no viable mass transit, and low median income vs. cost of living compared to other markets. Not to mention the ungodly amount of transplants that live in the Tampa Bay Area and simply root for ‘their’ home teams. There’s like 1.5 generations of Rays fans vs. multiple generations of fans of most other franchises.

I_am_photo | TEX

0 | 16 hours ago

Idk what that drive is like for them. I live in Maryland now and it is pretty annoying to have a cross a bridge to get somewhere. If something happens to the bridge hours get added to a drive. Like if I decide to go to an Orioles or Nationals game and the Bay bridge closes or there is a wreck on it I might consider not going. But it’s already a two hour drive minimum.

Seems like this would have been a chance for the two cities to have a feel good with each other.

7 | 17 hours ago

Tampa and Saint Pete get along, there is no rivalry or anything like that but the two cities are very different vibes

DanglyPants | CHC

0 | 16 hours ago

It’s not just annoying. it means it’s hard to catch games with the traffic. The 4 worst traffic cities I’ve been in are NYC, LA, Chicago, and Tampa. Despite Tampa having a much smaller CSA it’s the slowest to navigate. Craziest drivers are in Miami but Tampa’s also crazy and then going around that bridge adds a lot of extra time. Haters gonna hate

[deleted]

DanglyPants | CHC

2 | 12 hours ago

I’m sure it’s not actually one of the top 4 worst traffic cities in the US, but it’s just underrated. The only time I visited Houston, we stayed within walking distance of Minute Maid, and then we drove to Galveston for a night, and it wasn’t bad either way. I’m sure there’s actual data somewhere on traffic and not just our personal stories haha

I will say the only negative thing about Houston was i45 had a lot of trash on it lol

P.S. I need to get to Fenway. It’s at the top of my list if/when baseball is announced for next year!

Weak wager. Should have bet a case of Miller Lite v. a bottle of rum (given Tampa’s pirate history)

The stakes just got higher! Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson and St. Petersburg Mayor Ken Welch want to make the World Series a bit more interesting. The two mayors teamed up on social media to announce a wager as the Rays and Brewers duke it out in the Fall Classic.
