Any value to this set?
It’s a tap and die set for threading bolts and holes. It’s a nice set. Id buy it for $40
$80
Price seems pretty high to me.
Old tool sets are pretty common, where I live. Stuff like this is a dime a dozen on FBM.
FBM? Thank you for responding. I was either selling individual sets or small lots . Not sure . Sometimes selling a few pcs that are worth a little more idk I’m just checking out how you all think. This was a set given to me and I’d like to give him the money I get for it . Maybe idk thanks though
Honestly 40 is about right. At 40 you will sell. At 80 you will sit on it for weeks and have twenty offers for less. Taos and files all dull from use and bouncing against each other in a metal box for 30 years.
Theyre useless thread types in the modern era.
$41
The needle files, punches and burrs will always be useful. And you can never have enough taps.
Idk, did throw out all my gramp’s tap and die sets… not worth breaking them off in something compared to a modern, known set.
Value is directly proportional to usefulness
Which is highly individualized
At the right moment each one of those tools is priceless

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a one handed die holder?
i’ve met quite a few machinists missing fingers or with maimed hands so it makes sense! /s
Those are really cool and I’d like to have them. I’d probably still use my modern ones but I’d still like to have them.
I agree 100%!
Value? Lots of value.
Is it worth anything? Probably not much to be honest.
The tool box is the most valuable thing here.
I love this thread.
These threaders*
I’d give you 45 and a broken angle grinder. Fr tho that’s fat set boi
Bunch of dull rusted old taps, burrs and files? Looks more like someone’s dead tool bit collection. Even a light surface rust has damaged the cutting lip on the tools.
This stuff is about $0.01/ lb at every farm auction around here.
As a machinist, a rusted old tap just causes headaches. If it doesn’t snap off in the workpiece destroying it.
Might be a card tap wrench, can’t tell
Easy outs are great
Taps (and dies to a lesser extent) don’t age well. A tap is usually considered high-risk if it has a single chip. Anyone who taps things often knows what a PITA it is to get a broken tap out. These are badly rusted and of unknown integrity. You really should exclude them from your value calculation.
Files can be useful, but without wire brushing some of the gunk out of them, one has no way to know if they’re still viable.
The most valuable pieces here are the tools that hold those taps and dies and that sturdy box. Ask $100 for the lot but be prepared to go lower.
I will argue the older (non rusty) sets are better than a lot of the new ones. I have had many new ones break only to use my grandpa’s after pulling the debris. The 50s til the 90s metals were better than the fast made ones of today. Unless you get some from the Philippines or Japan for top dollar. I have been using the same craftsman set my grandfather had in the wooden box with an oil rag on it for 30 years now and none of them have broken. But whenever a new trainee wants me teach him and I use theirs I feel them snap. The angle on the smaller ones isn’t as tapered as the old ones are so they bite a lot more metal and break or jam. I and only do 1⁄4 turn and back out. Gentle and slow but….
I bought several 5 gallon buckets of taps, dies and endmills at an estate sale a decade ago. $2 a bucket, all at least 30-50 years old. Tap handles and reamers as well, lots of little stuff but a decent amount of larger stuff too, probably up to 8”. I’ve definitely got my moneys worth out of it all but there’s not a lot of “value” if it’s being sold as a lot without information on size, pitch, etc.
I would say so for myself!
I would take it for 100 bucks
Those die handles are pretty cool. Not sure any of its gonna be worth alot tho. Sure someone will buy it, it’s a good handful of useful tools…. but probably only get $100 or less for it all.
We talking cash or direct trade for stolen automobile audio equipment? 😀 asking for a tweaker friend.
eBay has some inflated prices for weird antique tooling. You don’t have enough dies there to actually be useful but the one handed die handles with whichever ones those are might net you a few bucks just because they’re unusual. On eBay, as a curiosity I could imagine you getting 20 for them pretty easily without looking up the actual pricing. If they fit the harbor freight dies, you might be able to get more.
Of the tools here the files are probably the ones that have the most functionality left if someone that works on things need a tiny file. The toolbox is the most valuable part. The toolbox is probably worth the same as everything else combined. If you’re selling all of this together, I would say about 45 bucks would be about as high as you get as this looks like machinist scraps, and the toolbox and one handed dye holders are the only things of interest and one is a novelty.
Recently, I paid about 20 bucks at a garage sale for a toolbox filled with scraps like these that came with an added milk crate full of more. With that 20 bucks, I got some anchors for lathe dial indicators and a victor oxy acetylene torch head. The price depends heavily on how you’re selling it.
