I’m convinced that most of the people in this sub don’t actually enjoy basketball.
The fact that there are so many out there that just are hate watching instead of actually enjoying the game, is just a comment of the society we live in today.It is so many people that does not know how to deal with just enjoying things instead of just finding things to hate.

I understand the irony of me commenting this advice here, but I strongly encourage everyone to just back off Reddit for a while– or even have periods or time or complete days where you stay off.
Reddit is the last remaining “social media” I have (I don’t Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, etc), yet I never regret not getting on here for a day or two, or sometimes a full weekend, or however long… the culture on this site is deeply cynical and very often toxic. Users intentionally misinterpret posts so they can one-up or gotcha others. And righteous indignancy is heavily rewarded here (more so on other subs but also on r/NBA, such as every Kobe thread getting completely derailed) which can lead to off topic tangents and insufferable exchanges. It’s an uphill battle to have a good faith conversation, much less a meaningful discussion. Even reading back through this comment I’ve typed, you can see in my opening clause I’m already prepping for and getting ahead of the snarky jokes about giving this advice while on the platform I’m bashing. This place just conditions you to be defensive and sensitive.
Anyways, sorry for the tangent, but interacting with humans in person is such a massive improvement than online dialogue– highly encourage everyone to do more of that.

Believe this is largely due to large social media companies tuning algorithms with thousand of data points to feed hate content to people as opposed to letting content grow naturally. I don’t think the majority of people on reddit in this sub actually watch basketball. It’s way too much hive mentality. If you have ever watched OKC play, I don’t know how you can vehemently hate Shai. His game is beautiful. His footwork, his consistency, his shot making are all amazing to watch. He might foul bate, but so do so many others. That is a larger NBA issue that they need to resolve.
But anyone who says they like hate Shai’s game to me just is either someone who doesn’t really watch and just wants upvotes from others that don’t watch, is a fan of a rival team who hates OKC (which I get), or is a bot.
I admittedly can’t watch as much as I’d like, but I’ve had the privilege of seeing OKC play HOU in person twice. SGA just reminds me of 90s Jordan with his shot selection and moves. That said, the flopping is really annoying, especially considering how good he already is. It’s less obvious from the 4th tier of seats than it is on camera, but you can still see the blatant ones.
Still, 80% of his shots are just buttery smooth perfection, literally flawless ball handling and shooting on fadeaway mids.
I don’t think the majority of people on Reddit understand basketball let alone have ever played a game. It’s easy to be a couch critic and join the bandwagon and unfortunately that will be their ceiling in the sport.
My issue with Shai/the Thunder is that they are coached to “play in the gray area of the rules” as an attempt to counter other real factors of the game like “large market bias”.
Which isn’t inherently bad… But it is counter the statements like this about “respecting the game”.
It is very very unfortunate when Shai does an incredible/beautiful move on one play… And then very obviously flops/falls down on a jump shot to influence officials on the next.
Most of the people I talk to offline that get upset by it usually take the stance of “he doesn’t NEED TO” because he is a good player. But their culture demands it. Taking the mentality of “the refs won’t call everything because it would ruin the product”… Which isn’t basketball.
Care to provide evidence of this being “coached”? I’m not saying every time Shai falls he’s not flopping, but the majority of the time it is certainly to soften the blow to his lower body. This is a strategy many players (and more should) use.
