It’s wild how overrated Brown became as a defender. Comparing him to PG defensively is night and day
Brown is a good POA defender with a lot of physical tools but off-ball he’s just too unaware. PG is still good as a POA defender while being great at navigating screens, switching, disrupting the passing lanes, and having very good judgement as a help defender. Extremely smart defender and it still shows even with his physical decline.
this is what people dont get about Brown. He is a tunnel vision player both on offense and defense. Relative to the passiveness of JT at times, it can be a double edged sword
Very low situational awareness with Brown and that seems to extend both on and off court.
I wouldn’t call Brown a complete POA defender because he can die very quickly fighting through screens, more of a standstill defender.

He needs to stay healthy because he’s still very impactful. It won’t be the raw PPG but just the other stuff he does on the court.
I was surprised the Celtics did not start Pritchard today. I don’t know what the final lineup would be for game one, but I thought this would be the year to clearly start Pritchard since they need another isolation scorer without Brown and then just stagger the starters rest of the way.
Prichard just provides way too much value coming off the bench and torching 2nd units. If he started consistently he could probably fuck around and be an all star in the right scenario.
So PP just does better off the bench. He will probably play a Manu type role. Where he comes off the bench plays 30+minutes and closes games.
I think the Cs have 3 point guards: Tatum, Pritchard, and Conley. These are the players that can theoretically create offense with the ball in their hands. Conley is a question mark at this point in his career and probably shouldn’t be relied on frequently. Frankly, I’m only including him because it felt disrespectful not to include him. Playing Tatum and Pritchard together is good, but staggering them is better so that lineups always have someone who can create. I think most would agree that it is better to stagger at the beginning of the game and end the game with your strongest five, so I think that is what is in store for Pritchard again this year. We will see

I mean there’s an argument to be made that the Tatum/brown pairing just never really fit on the court. As much success as they have had how many years did Boston fail against inferior teams in the playoffs in series they were favored in?
And it was always the same way. Playing a stagnant offense with brown/tatum trading off and going iso.
It worked in 2024 because Brad built a super team and every star was hurt. But otherwise it’s been the same time and time again.
Personally I think that was a bigger factor in Brad trading brown than just the salary. Because they were willing to go after Giannis for that salary
JB got a bit more of that dog in him though. PG sometimes becomes super passive or loses the battles mentally during a tough series. If the rest of the team can carry the load when that happens though, then they could be good
