Because KAT has a PO for next season. If you’re the Knicks, the worst case scenario is him opting out and just signing for the max with another team in FA. Losing KAT in FA doesn’t just magically make it so the Knicks then have $50m to spend in FA. They’ll lose that salary slot for nothing.

I think it’s entirely possible that this can seep out onto the court and that there’s a topic to discuss.

I also know that I just watched half a season of Karl-Anthony Towns thinking he was going to end up in Milwaukee, playing like he thought he was going to end up in Milwaukee, and then putting the bullshit to the side and arguably being the best player on the team for the last 3-4 months of the season.

I think it’s entirely possible that the players are upset. But I also think the team has proven enough that they can put the noise aside to unite around a common goal that I do not care about blowing this out of proportion or turning it into a big story until proven otherwise.

Nba players are exceedingly good at getting traded if they want. The contracts dont keep them anywhere.

In this day and age players of his calibre dont play on expiring contracts. Very few top players ever make it to unrestricted free agency. They either get locked up, or get traded for assets. Considering that this is the prevailing norm, KAT and Hart have every right to be upset

KAT can opt out of his contract in the offseason and then he becomes an unrestricted free agent. That would end the Knicks immediate championship window and force them to mix up the team.

Also we’ve only heard what the Knicks offered.. not what KAT wants. I’m guessing it’s way higher than most are thinking. This all feels like drama from KATs camp.

Also, 27-28 doesn’t matter, it’s 28-29 when Brunsons contract goes into effect. I’m also guessing that those KAT and Hart under the second apron numbers don’t also include paying Deuce.

KAT having the ability to hit free agency next summer would be a really big story for the 27-28 season and beyond, so the fact that the Knicks are shutting down extension talks and thus leaving that avenue open is kinda a big deal for what it could mean for future seasons.

Also, we’re kinda in a dead period for news at this point since it’s the preseason and the rookie extension deadline isn’t for a little bit, so there isn’t much else for ESPN/people like Shams to talk about. This’ll probably quiet down once we get closer to the season/rookie extension deadline.

NBA offices have to look and plan ahead. With KAT’s option next year, he could be an expiring this year, and suddenly next year could have a huge hole. That in turn might mean the Knicks have to consider trading him sooner rather than later.

I personally don’t think KAT is worth anything close to the 35% Max he is eligible for, but I have generally also been lower than consensus on him as one of your top 2 players - which he very kindly shoved right back in my face particularly with his great defence on Wemby in the Finals.

But this is also a league that is run on ego’s. 99% of NBA players, especially the stars, don’t get to this level without believing they are the best person on the court everytime they enter the gym.

And a huge part of team building is managing those ego’s - and the reality is that contracts are the biggest part of that

I would bet there’s an 80% chance it all gets sorted and they find a middle ground.

But the longer this takes, KAT has never been one to keep complaints to himself - and I would expect to look at how quickly Brunson is offered the 35% next summer. And if his own deal doesn’t come close, and another team is offering more than NY - then at that point there’s a decent chance he declines his PO and leaves as a FA or S&T.

It’s really just whether it’s a cloud that looks over the team and affects play.

KAT is clearly not worth 60+m a year

There are 30 teams. The team that sets the market for a player is the team that pays the player the most money.

I understand a fan saying KAT isn’t worth 60M a year if you want the team he’s on to build a competitive roster, but it goes both ways. If KAT has a team saying that they’re going to pay him 60+m a year then you have to understand KAT wanting that money. Because if he stays in NY for 40m a year that means he’s missing out on a 50% raise from another team.

Every team in the western conference that wants to win has a Wemby problem. KAT just proved that he can eat Wemby for breakfast. He will get 60mil a year EASY if the Knicks are dumb enough to let him reach the free agent market

It’s mainly the interest of Dolan. The restrictions don’t matter to the Knicks who have a well constructed team. They also don’t have many picks either so they aren’t heavy in the trade market. What’s more important is keeping this core together.
