[Haynes] KAT and the Knicks still remain far apart on extension talks. New York is offering 4Y/200M while the Max is 4Y/276M. KAT believes he sacrificed for the team to help them get a championship and he’s even willing to take a bitt less than the Max, so he feels like the Knicks should come over.
Karl-Anthony Towns and the New York Knicks are still significantly distant from reaching a potential contract extension.
NBA insider Chris Haynes revealed that while Towns is fully willing to take a discount, any possible deal for both sides remains unrealistic.
“Sources have relayed to me that sides still remain far apart on an extension. From what I was told, Karl-Anthony Towns is willing to take less, but they are nowhere close to that,” Haynes said on NBA TV.
“Right now, his max is four years, \(270 million, right? And the Knicks, I was told, have offered four years, \)200 million. And Karl-Anthony Towns, his representation, they’re not going for that right now.”
Karl-Anthony Towns and the New York Knicks will enter the new NBA season as the defending champions with plenty of uncertainty regarding their future.
Towns will make \(57 million during the 2026-27 season and has a \)61 million player option for the following year. He is eligible for a four-year extension that could be worth up to $276 million.
However, the Knicks are only offering $200 million for the star big man, which Towns’ camp has firmly rejected.
Towns also made recent rants about his unresolved contract situation with the franchise, showing his frustration with the Knicks.
The New York Knicks are being cautious to evade the league’s second apron and preserve flexibility. However, their desire for Karl-Anthony Towns to take a massive pay cut remains doubtful.
After helping the Knicks win it all last year and serving as the team’s two-way hub, Towns remains willing to help New York while ensuring his contract reflects his market value.
“This is a situation where Karl-Anthony Towns believes that this should be done,” Haynes added. “He believes he’s willing to take a little bit less than his max. He believes he’s done all that he can do to sacrifice for the team to help them get a championship, which he did. This is something that he wished was resolved sooner than later, but it doesn’t look like that’s the case as of right now.
“So the Knicks, they’re trying to stay under that apron. And so that is problematic, but from Kat’s standpoint, he’s done everything that was asked of him and he’s not asking for his full max. So he feels like they should come over. So we’re just at a standstill right now.”
