Agreed. Obviously nothing about his circumstances have been typical, but being a good defender is enormously important for guys his height too if you’re not scoring like Brunson or Don. There have been plenty of 6’2” that can give drop 15 no problem but can’t stay on the floor.
I mean he flat out is a below average defender.
Meanwhile, he has hit 1 in 4 preseason games.

Those are the same numbers he shot in pre-season the first two years. No one pays attention to percentages in October. They’re trying to gauge IQ, play making, and defense.
Two preseason games can’t tell you anything about his shooting.
He’s about 35% from 3 for his career right now. A bit too low for someone who is undersized and whose only other skill is good but not great defense.
If he can pull that up to about 38% or 39% he could be an NBA role player.
Then he may actually be earning the money he gets paid. It’s his job to be good.
