[SNY] Andre Drummond was asked about climbing up the all-time NBA rebounds list and said once he passes Dennis Rodman, he “doesn’t want to hear anything else”
I remember in one of the 2Ks you could trade for Drummond pretty cheap and it was when he was like 18 so all you had to do was upgrade his potential and then he became one of the best centers in the league. Good times.
My favorite era of 2k
I had so much fun with that game. Im thinking it was 16-18. I tried the other ones but they didnt scratch the itch the same way.
My bro and I would do franchises and each have a team. We’d play each other 4 times and aim the rest of the games. Some years we’d meet in The playoffs. Good times
The new one is pretty dope. I took a couple years off but the franchise mode now you can start in 1983 and the league evolves as you play. The draft classes have most of the real players too. Notable missing are Reggie miller and Charles Barkley but other than that I think all the stars are on it.
In the 2k after that he was 88ovr at 19 with an A potential. His value was so high you couldnt trade Dwade for him 1 for 1.
0.8 PTS, 25.7 REB, 4.4 BPG. I just had him rebound and kick out.
That was like 2k13 or 14. Good times
I will argue to my last dying breath that 2k14 was the last good game they made. And even then the next gen version was so fucking barebones it was insulting lol. No team creation and editing rosters was a goddamn pain
Devastated me when they took away team creation! I used to spend hours spinning up teams back then. For some reason every sports game besides NHL took it away at some point
I also did this with him and Dennis Schroeder… Don’t judge me.
Rebound statistics are weird. Drummond has the highest Total Rebound Rate in NBA history and has also had seasons when his team secured a higher percentage of rebounds when he was off the floor. Is he a great rebounder? Probably. Is he one of the best rebounders of all time? I have no idea.
Raw rebound numbers are a known hole in box score stats. If you grab an uncontested rebound, it counts as one rebound. If you grab an offensive rebound over 3 guys, then that’s also a single rebound.
If your teammate blocks a shot into your hands, that’s a rebound too lol
Get dumped by your girl and date another, also a rebound.
You could literally say this about any stat. You make a basket and it’s two points. You make a basket with 3 defenders on you as the clock runs out and it’s two points.
Those two shots are worth the same to your team in the long run though, unless you want to make an argument about the mental aspect or wearing down a defense. A contested rebound is more valuable than an uncontested rebound because it denies your opponent a possession.
If you shoot an uncontested layup it’s 2 points, if you knock down an 18ft fadeaway over a double team it’s also 2 points.
That same thing goes for all box score stats
this is where i legit think Westbrook’s rebounding was underrated.
did he get some freebies? absolutely.
did he get some rebounds that he legit just went up over everyone and grabbed the board? all the fucking time.
He also had Steven Adam’s boxing out specifically for him to grab boards so I think it evened out
It’s not just about freebies, though. Westbrook often discarded defensive effort in exchange for rebounding position.
He has good examples of both great rebounds and terrible ones.
I started watching the league in 2014 and I remember he rebounded over Marc Gasol even though he was being boxed out.
if you watch the video i linked in another comment you see him rebound over tons of bigs.
Hilarious example as someone who regularly had his guys assigned to just box out and he be the one to go get it.
The more people say the stat padder is underrated, the most overrated it gets.
I remember the hilarious excuse that he can get it up the court quicker. As if he’s faster than an outlet pass.
I appreciate that his fans’ game IQs are all similar to his.
did you watch westbrook play basketball?
Eh might be lazy but I use offensive rebounding as a barometer. Nobody is giving away oRebs so if a guy couples high rebounds with good oReb rates I’m going to think he’s a good rebounder.
Drummond led the league in oReb per game seven times and has the fifth best rate of all time so I’m pretty confident he’s a good rebounder
Half his offensive rebounds come from him missing layups
Considering he had seasons with more ORB than missed shots per game I’m not thinking you’re very well researched here
Way to go out on a limb.
Sorry I didn’t give you a bigger opening to juice those top 1% commenter stats with pointless arguments over hyperbole, I’ll atone to Saint Skip and say seven Hate Bronnys as penance
I don’t really get the personal go at me or telling the other guy to jump out a window and kill himself because we thought it was a little funny to call an all time rebounder good, but alright.
Drummond got a ton of rebounds off of his own misses, in large part because he had the rare quality of taking the vast majority of his shots right beside the basket + also somehow missing a lot lol.
Missing layups and tapping it up aren’t really positive basketball plays in comparison to another C who would have just scored it the first time.
You’ve obviously never heard of Moses Malone, the king of tipping his own misses
Barkley was also one of those guys who would get in position and play volleyball on the glass.
If your second jump is better than most dude’s first jump, it’s not even bad strategy. You’re just dribbling off the backboard to keep possession.
Except Moses Malone was an efficient basketball player.
We’re talking about Andre Drummond here. He didn’t convert a lot of these tips lol. He would just get the tip and miss again.
I feel like we’re talking about different people because the Drummond I know was universally panned as an inefficient shot chucker who chased meaningless rebounds his whole career. Like this is what he was known for. He was never a good player.
Mebounds
That’s true for any old school big to some extent and a large part of why Wilt got those ridiculous 25RPG seasons.
Most of the old school legends had other facets of their game that were positive. Drummond does not.
His team was better on defense with him on the bench. His team was better on offense with him on the bench. His team was better at rebounding when he was on the bench.
This is exactly my point that box score rebounds can be deceiving. Drummond was not a good player at any point in his career. Anyone who watched him knew this and the advanced stats made it very clear. He was inefficient, he was a bad decision maker, he wasn’t skilled, and he didn’t even put a lot of effort in. Him getting a lot of rebounds off of his own misses (and often still not scoring, mind you) doesn’t change that.
scoring not a positive basketball play
second chance points notoriously negative basketball stat
bro come on dawg u doing mental gymnastics over Andre Drummond
Drummond was incredibly inefficient his whole career. Every advanced stat have him as a negative. Him getting a lot of rebounds off of his own inefficient offense doesn’t change that.
Deummond’s team rebounded and scored better when he was on the bench. Why is that?
Did anyone here even watch Drummond play? He wasn’t good lol. This is exactly my point in that rebound numbers can be deceiving. You all think his rebounding positively contributed to his team when it simply didn’t.
Mebounds if you will
I feel like contested rebounds are a much better metric than offensive rebounds. As other comments have mentioned, Drummond racked up a substantial number of ORebounds by grabbing his own missed layups, and I don’t think an ORebound where the ball clangs out to a wide open guy 20ft from the basket says all that much about that dudes rebounding ability. Meanwhile, grabbing a contested rebound means you’re taking a possession away from the opposing team; that’s the biggest value rebounding can provide.
That’s fair, I just don’t see contested rebounds in typical stat readouts and I’m too lazy to dig deep for it
He’s a “good” rebounder? Way to lean yourself out of the window.
[deleted]
Yikes
Conversely someone like Nene can have poor rebounding numbers but his teams consistently over performed on the boards when he played.
Just rebounds with no other information is a near-meaningless stat. Even without a centre, rebounding can often be replicated by just having the other guys go for them more. Big guys nowadays are out there for defense, not rebounding (for the most part).
It also doesn’t tell the full story because we don’t know what the guy did to get the rebound.
Did he leave his man open and dive to the rim? Or did he box out and grab the offensive rebound? Did he follow his shot instead of getting back on defense just to chase a stat? Or did he see that the shot was going to be short and positioned himself properly?
Rebounds just don’t matter because there’s not much context around them. Points have efficiency. Steals create turnovers. Blocks are (usually) directly taking away points. Assists correlated to buckets. Rebounds on the other hand don’t tell you anything.
In theory they tell you that a possession was gained or retained
But the problem is that a “good rebounder” generally doesn’t change the rebound battle.
In 2017, for example, the Rockets were top 9 in rebounding despite their best rebounder (Capela) only playing 68 games + averaging 8rpg + being their only centre + playing just 24mpg. They made up for their lack of a “rebounder” with a team rebounding effort.
That’s because the Rockets played at the 3rd fastest pace. The 2016-17 Rockets finished 20th in rebounds per 100 possessions.
That’s why I think contested vs uncontested rebounds is the best context for someone’s skill/capability as a rebounder. To me, an uncontested rebound doesn’t show much skill; you’re grabbing a miss after the opposing team has already given up to go run in transition or the ball took a funny bounce and you lucked into being in the right place to grab it. On the flip side, a contested rebound is super valuable because it denies your opponent a possession. If I was in an NBA front office, I’d pretty much dismiss uncontested rebounds as statistical noise and much more heavily weight how many contested rebounds somebody grabs.
Makes sense. Drummond was known to hunt rebounds and even fight teammates for them. his teammates are practicing rebounding against the goat in rebounds. So it translates in game
Let us not forget Rodman was also a FUCKING defender. Always loved Andre Drummond, but he aint that level of player.
Not gonna try and argue Drummond over Rodman defensively, but AD did have some nasty hands in his prime. I remember a sequence where he played man defense on DWade back to back possessions and picked his pocket both times. He could have been a great defender, but gambled too much. Early in his career he was almost a 2stl/2blk guy as a result though!
Cmon AD is taken don’t do this
Grow up. Initials aren’t “taken”. Context.
Totally. One time my friend called me up super excited because MJ the famous basketball player was signing autographs at the mall. Turns out he meant Mark Jones, the old Nets point guard from the 80s. I got upset because I obviously assumed Michael Jordan, but then he reminded me that initials aren’t taken and I thought, “True. This is my fault.”
When you play in an era where you could foul every play and the cross over is considered an advanced dribble move it’s easier to be an elite defender
What centers and Pfs are crossing over Andre?
He’s gonna say Hakeem gonna hit him with that lateral movement lol
Drummond: 967 games, avg 11.9 per game
Rodman: 911 games, avg 13.1 per game
Drummond: 22.6 rebounds per 100 possessions
Rodman: 21.4 per 100 possessions
Eye test. Dennis grabbed rebounds in important moments and always made him playable despite having a trash offensive game. He was a better rebounder because it’s more than just the final numbers either way.
YouTube Rodman highlights vs Drummond rebound highlights. Rodman looks like a gd beast while Drummond taps it to himself 5 times and that’s not the same thing.
He was also a mean defender, i remember how they put him against young shaq and he get in his head.
Rodman had a weird killer instinct, hence why he performs better in the playoffs but only in teams with clear alphas(Zeke and MJ, D-Rob was a great player but was weak mentally). But Rodman’s mamba mentality wasnt as strong as MJ or Kobe, leading to Rodman to take vacations in the middle of the playoffs, which Kobe or MJ never did
Drummond seems content in beating up and stacking his stats against lottery teams in the regular season
bro i’m going back thru Nitro and Raw on my cytube channel, started in 1996.
we’re up to 1998. Rodman has appeared at random times on Nitro, but he just showed up on the June 8th episode of Nitro.
June 8th, 1998.
Game 3 of the NBA Finals was June 7th. that means after the game, he literally skipped a practice and flew to go hang with Hulk Hogan and show up on a pro wrestling show.
like imagine that shit happening today lmaooooo.
if anyone mentions any of killer instincts, alpha, or mamba mentality = automatic downvote
Both good.
Rodman plays more minutes lol we don’t have to do this
I mean if we really want to get into the details the pace of the game in the 90s is slower than in 2010s-2020s. 90s still has a better pace than the 2000s I think. Then there’s the type of rebounds.
This is a common but at least half-wrong belief.
Early 90s pace was faster than early-mid 2010s.
It wasn’t until 2018 that pace caught up w
ith the early 90s.
The league average pace across Rodman’s career was 97
Drummond’s career league average pace so far has also been 97
Yeah thanks for providing the actual details. Rodman also played in the 80s with a faster pace anyways.
He’s over hated, may have been a low IQ player early in his career but he’s done a lot to extend his career even started knocking down corner threes last year.
He really brought it on himself after the first extension. He really wanted to be a major part of the offense but he lacked all the skills. Then he wouldn’t get touches and his motor would disappear while he pouted. I’m glad to see him be more realistic about what he can do for the team. He also complained if he didn’t get first pick on easy boards. God the more I write the more I really remember him whining when he fell short and the team moved on to other options. I hope he’s more mature about his shortcomings in general
Edit: the whining really makes the rodman comparison pretty spot on actually. Talented but even more talented at getting in his own way sometimes
This is why he’s disliked:
https://old.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/oxmxb4/andre_drummond_admits_he_intentionally_elbows/
“I’ve put my hands on my teammates before,” Drummond said on the Mickstape Podcast. “It doesn’t matter who. It was in Detroit, he’s actually one of my really close friends, too.
“I had to put my hands on him when we first got him. I told him to do something and he didn’t do it. I gave him a warning and he still didn’t do it.”
What was the warning?
“I punched him in the head,” Drummond said. “He didn’t do it again. It happened more than once too. It was because of rebounds.
“He’s a rebounding player too, as a guard. He kept coming to take my rebounds, so I pulled him aside during a timeout and said, ‘Yo bro, you don’t see me trying to go for 50 every night, don’t try to come in for rebounds.’”
Drummond said that he let the rebound stealing slide a handful of times, but he got to a point where he had to make a statement.
“I just got to a point where I elbowed him in the head the next time he jumped,” Drummond said.
He’s spoken plenty of times over the years about how he doesn’t allow his teammates to get rebounds. This is why he’s bounced around the league like a leper, even though he’s averaged 15⁄12 for most his career. Not a winning player.
You linked a 5 year old post man, that rebound narrative is even older than the post you linked. He’s been a quality backup center for a few years now
He’s literally comparing himself to Rodman and saying “I don’t want to hear it when I’ve passed him”, so why would I ignore the vast majority of his career and the player that he was for most of it when he racked up all those rebounds? If they’re talking legacy in the title, can’t fault me for brining up his legacy.
You could honestly interpret this as I will get the rebound get out on the fast break.
You could, but you’d be wrong because Drummond is not a good outlet rebounder or passer. He’s made it pretty clear over the years what type of player he was.
yeah. low iq player…early in his career…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSklkXsFkvY
as someone who watched the pandemic cavs I am here to tell you he is probably hated the correct amount, maybe even slightly underhated 😭
Does he think he’s a better rebounder than Rodman? Lol
Let’s go big fella do that shit
Idk how he averages so many rebounds. We still got spanked on the boards even when he was in
He was the only guy out there rebounding, with nobody boxing out for him when he was on the floor
Always been a big fan of Andre
Loved him when he played Bulls even if some stuff was questionable shooting or move sets
My favorite memory of him is when Tori Craig and him tried to dunk at the same time 😅
Some real Tim Floyd era Bulls shit.
It was funny when he got starter minutes he was still dropping random 20-20 games with the Bulls
Incredibly underrated. Lotta critics focusing on what he can’t do vs. what he can
To be fair to the critics, Drummond has also spent a decent amount of his career focusing on what he can’t do instead of what he can. Which I don’t blame him for trying to expand his game but at times came at a cost to the things he was good at and made him a less valuable and efficient player.
You didn’t have to suffer watching him every game early in his career.
Lest impactful 20-20 games you’d ever see
The man had so many Mebounds when he was in Detroit. The guy rebounded his own misses for years haha. Around 15% of his career Offensive rebounds are expounding his own misses.
There is a reason why he 6’11, 280lbds yet his field goal percentage doesnt look like, for example, Mitch Robinson’s.
From NBC Sports: This isn’t new news, look what Drummond told MLive last season when asked if he rushes shots knowing he might miss and grab his own board: “Yeah, I’d say sometimes I do,” Drummond said, when asked if he indeed plots some misses directionally. “I’m not going to lie. I do sometimes. I know I can go get it and put it right back in.”
https://www.nbcsports.com/nba/news/andre-drummonds-offensive-rebounding-trick-grabbing-his-own-miss
Guy would just throw up anything and rebound his own misses. Thats not what Rodman or the true best of the best rebounders do to get their boards. Drummond is obviously a good rebounder. But the guy ain’t a Dennis Rodman.
Sounds like Moses Malone.
Andre Reese
These longevity stats don’t make you better, Rodman played 14 years. I know Bron fans think LeBron is a better rebounder than Dennis Rodman because he passed Rodman’s totals after playing 10 more years. This era is ridiculous.
Nice
The most unbelievable number is drummonds age lol.
This fuckin goof is going to be the face of rebounding over one of the GOATS.
He will be the face of Mebounding
The real ones will know who the true greatest rebounders are haha
Looking at the top 20, I see there are no active players. 19 Hofers and Buck Williams. The name doesn’t even sound familiar to me, even though I thought, I knew a lot about NBA history. Can anyone fill me in please? What do you remember about him and his game? I see he made a couple of All-stars.
Buck Williams was an absolute dawg. I didn’t get to watch him much during his prime when he was with the Nets or early days with the Blazers, but just watching him his last 5-6 seasons in his mid 30s told me everything I needed to know. Tough, quiet, strong fundamentals, terrific defender, a worker, a winner. Everything you wanted from a power forward during that era. The Knicks signing him in summer of ‘96 was such a savvy move. He was 36 years old and should’ve been washed, but he fit in so perfectly with that team culture and showed up to play. He could still put up 10 and 10 off the bench once every 5-6 games. I remember once he was 1 rebound shy of a 20 and 20 game, even at that age.
Honestly, for a guy who received MVP votes in 5 seasons and DPOY votes in 3, he should probably be in the HoF conversation, even with only 3 all-star appearances, but he was a class act both on and off the court, and he had a strong college career as Maryland.
the strong and silent type
Gary Cooper was gay?
He was gay, Gary cooper?*
What does it mean to be in the HOF conversation? Either you think he should be in or you don’t
Drummond is not an absolute dawg
Reading comprehension will get you far in life
What did you say about my mom!?
Lebron at #23 was momentarily surprising
Rebounds used to be way higher in Wilt and Russell’s era because there was such a high pace with so little efficiency so guys in that era got a lot of rebounds
Used to be a fantasy cheat
5 boards a game for 82 games if there’s no injuries
He had 5 oReb in 20 min tonight lol
He’s only gone under that 1 time in 14 years
What
Thats wild
Yeah right, dude gets mad when his teammates steal his boards.
HoFer
Some of the fakest rebounds ever
Congrats. He was almost out the league some years ago and rejuvenated his career as a solid role player. Andre Ewing. Andre Rodman.
It annoys me that this guy is never in the conversation for stat padder of the year.
He wants to be deaf? That’s weird
I will always love Drummond.
Is he trying to say that will put the icing on some mysterious cake that annoints him the greatest rebounder ever? He’s insanely deluded if he believes that. Rodman is actually a great example of why using career totals to compare players is the height of insanity. Bro is just 25th on the career rebounds list and is clearly a top three rebounder of all time, if not the greatest rebounder of all time. But kids these days have made career total stats more important than they deserve to be, mainly since LeBron’s ascent up those particular leaderboards. They made them important because they are literally the only thing he has over MJ.
Rebound Percentage is the amount of missed shots that end in you grabbing the rebound in the minutes you play. You can’t control your minutes, but you can control what you do in your minutes.
Drummond is 2nd all time in Offensive Rebound percentage (behind Rodman, over Moses).
Drummond is 1st all time in Defensive Rebound percentage. Rodman is 6th.
Drummond is 1st all time in Total Rebound percentage. Rodman is 2nd.
Drummond is high enough on these lists historically that it is not crazy for him to believe he is right there with Rodman historically. You don’t have to agree. But statistically it is not delusional. It is not just career totals. He is statistically right up there with Rodman when you actually factor in their minutes on the floor.
Numbers tell one story, but there is only 1 Dennis Rodman.
It’s like saying Lebron is better than Jordan because he has more points.
I don’t think he’s implying he’s better than Rodman. Just that you can’t tell him shit once he passes Rodman. Which is valid. Surpassing Rodman is an incredible accomplishment no matter how long it takes.
Fair call… props to the big guy for being an absolute rock and being durable. It is a great achievement. No disrespect intended to the man.
all time losing-ass player. the more playing time he gets on a team the more that team loses
remember when people called Angel Reese the WNBA Andre Drummond?
she’s 1 game from making the Finals while Bricklin Clark, the WNBA Jimmer Fredette, can’t even win a playoff series
skibidi brainrot
Brickliinnnnn
Uhm, ok
yea yall hella mad that Angel Reese winning basketball while Bricklin got packed
Is “hella mad” in the room with us right now?
prob in Cancun with Bricklin
Still league worst FG% within 3 ft of the rim too? Super impressive
DPOY
yea Bricklin Clark shooting 28% from 3pt in playoffs lmao
I’m not riding for Caitlin, but youve got Ms Mebound’s dick so far down your throat it’s messing up your brain
Ms. About-to-make-Finals-while-BRICKIN-watching-from-Cancun
and yet she’s a top 2 player on her team right now that is one win a way from the finals and undefeated in the playoffs w/ the best rating in the playoffs.
you don’t have to like her game but she undeniably impacts winning
They’ve always been friends
https://youtube.com/shorts/JF-q3SNLIZw
Don’t try to do that. No reason for this petty rivalry stuff the players don’t even buy into
why don’t you tell that to the Caitlin Clark fans who always shit on Angel and say racist shit?
I’m not one of them and they suck too. I’ve defended Angel from some toxic nonsense in the past as well.
You being obnoxious doesn’t do anything to make them better it just makes the discourse around the W more toxic.
Like why are you in a Drummond thread beating your chest like this?
because they take every chance they get to criticize Angel and they need to be humbled
I’m taking every chance to rub it in that Angel is so close to making Finals while their golden girl got mopped in 1st round and they won’t have shit to say anymore
He’s not even a low bar lol. Drummond made multiple all star teams and an all NBA team. Averaged a double double for 15 years or some shit. That’s not nothing.
A few rebounding titles top it off as well.
Clark has been setting records, she isn’t Fredette
yea she setting records for most chucks in a game while shooting 28% from 3pt lmao
Who actually watches women’s basketball?
Drummond smashed Jeanette McCurdy. And that’s pretty sweet. Just learned this fact and didn’t k ow where else to share it
How many extra seasons did it take him?
I think games/seasons are probably less important than minutes.
Rodman ≈ 28,878 minutes
Drummond ≈ 25,432 minutes
Okay buddy
This man has been ass for years.
His only claim to fame is getting rebounds and doing literally nothing else on the court.
Must be easy when you threaten to punch teammates in the head if they try to take ‘your’ rebounds.
2/9/2020
9:22
Andre Drummond misses a 1-foot tip layup shot in the lane blocked by Ivica Zubac
Andre Drummond offensive rebound
9:27
Andre Drummond misses a 2-foot jumper in the lane blocked by Ivica Zubac
9:34
Andre Drummond misses a 1-foot tip layup shot in the lane
9:36
Andre Drummond misses a layup
Neither of them are the best rebounder anyways, that’s wilt and then Russell.
How many broads though sir? Hmm? That Disney girl meme lol I forgot
Rape is pretty offensive
At least he wasn’t a Greg oden
Damn he must be closing on top 10…
Nope… 28th, and still behind Lebron who also passed Rodman.
“still behind LeBron” as if LeBron wasnt drafted 9 years earlier
That’s all this dude does though.
