[Lowlight] Someone has been coaching Koa Peat to change his jump shot form, and the result looks awful!
He shot 62% from the line in college and his jumper was awful anyway, barely took threes, awful in mid range
In the NBA that jumper wasn’t going to work
Probably not wrong but this one isnt going to either
Correcting a jumper isn’t overnight. Correcting a bad jumper isn’t even a 3 month thing.
Ugly jumpers are an accumulation of bad shooting habits. It takes a lot of time to change habits that might caught some motions to be dominant. Muscle imbalance, lack of flexibility in some joints.
I would assume this isn’t the final product, but an intermediary.
Adding to your point though, successfully changing a jumper in the pros is rare. Most stay dogshit or are Shawn Marion.
Yeah, I think whoever posted this is doing a disservice to him. I understand the interest in the subject, but shining a light on something that is a work in progress isn’t helpful or really illustrative of anything. It could look like complete garbage for a while when the form is being adjusted.
Larry Bird had one of the worst shooting forms in history too.
Is The Matrix his shooting coach?
Shit with how that jumper looks i might be
Ben Simmons needed a side hustle this summer.
There’s an repeating issue here, that people seem to glaze over
Someone is teaching these kids to throw it from the stomach
And it’s been a trend since Steph came into the league
And the worst part is - Steph doesnt do that. Steph is just too quick with release so it seems like it’s a stomach-shot, but it is not
Why do I claim conspiracy here, here’s proof:
Ray Allen proper 2-motion release
That’s how it’s supposed to be done. One motion is to raise it, 2nd motion is to release it
What many people dont know - Giannis Also had a proper form when he came to the league
Someone reworked Giannis to also throw it from the stomach
After years of struggle, he managed to find at least Some form but it’s still based on a “push” rather than a release
Here’s Fultz after “relearning” using the same bulshit “stomach push” form
And it’s mind boggling to me. Like, it’s that easy - “kid, here’s Ray Allen’s tape. here’s also Klay Thompson tape. Watch, learn, repeat”
You literally dont need even fine-tuning, you just need a proper form and 1000s of repeats
Peja had un-orthodox shot, with his off hand being WAY OFF to the side, But it still was a 2-motion proper release that made Peja one of the best of all time in shooting
He used to have such a high release point to get the ball over defenders. What the hell is this new crap?!?!
Look at the video of Oso’s jumpshot. It’s the suns staff doing this bullshit
They are trying to change the jumper of shitty ass shooters? Why would they do that shit? What the actual fuck?
They tried to change Oso’s shot? The guy who shot 45% from the line last season, why would they do that?
Hey man that shooting form looks just like mine
I mean, working with shitty shooters to fix their form is the right idea. But these new forms ain’t it either lol
Because he shot shitty.
I don’t understand what you’re saying. Players are supposed to practice & get better.
🤷🏻♂️
I’m being sarcastic u fucking genius
These replies and dumb comments are acting like they change Curry’s jumper, both these players were awful shooters
It is demonstrably harder for a bad shooter to learn a new shooting form. It might be counter-intuitive but there are hardly any examples of a bad shooter becoming much better after changing their whole shooting motion, it usually just comes with practice of the same motion. Good shooters, on the other hand, can learn more easily to adjust their release point, speed, etc
They should consult Ilovebasketballtv on YT, he lives in the valley area.
This post had me questioning if that video I saw this morning was actually of Oso or if it had been Peat this entire time
It’s crazy how someone can make it to the NBA and have a shooting form that bad.
It wasn’t though. At Arizona he didn’t shoot many threes but when he did his form actually looked good. I have no idea what this nonsense is. It looks like a 2nd grader’s chest shot
His shot at az was 100 percent arms with no power transfer at all, that’s why he couldn’t extend his range
It might have been all arms but it was still a million times better than this Shawn Marion impersonation he’s doing now
Shawn Marion
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.
Gilly the kidd
His now famous Hornets shooting form was not what he had coming into the league either. Like he wasnt a good shooter, but it wasnt that. Whatever shooting coach did that should be forced to answer questions lol
Kevin Martin. And he was a baller.
Re-read the title of the post, the information is literally right there
He was 1 and done for a reason. He definitely parlayed his age into his draft stock. He really needs to develop that 3 to make his game work at the NBA level. Hes not going to be able to body people like he did in college.
These guys were all picked when they were 12. They don’t know if they’re any good until they finally make the nba. It makes me feel for the guys out there working hard that will never even sniff a chance.
Him getting drafted in the 1st was kind if surprising. Mainly due to someone completely fking his jumpshot in the draft process. Yes this shot is also different and even more fked
A Jeremy Sochan in the making
Dude looks like Markelle Fulz protege. He wasn’t a good shooter in college but this is just silly
Ben Simmons would like a word
It’s really not crazy, he’s a 6’8 very good athlete that was a good player in college
These dudes probably still shoot like 60% from three in an open gym
Is this gym not an open gym?
There’s cameras here, cameras = -30% shooting because of pressure
Pressure plays a part for sure. But most of the reason for the stark drop off is you have a defender most of the time, who is making you either rush your shot (behind the arch) or he’s trying to disrupt your base (more for shots inside the arch).
Fatigue also is a huge factor. In warmups, you’re not really making any quick movements, so you have all of your legs available to aid you. If you sprint back on defense, make a few rotations and close out at least once, before sprinting back on a transition opportunity for a kick out, it’s way, way harder to make that shot when your legs lose 30-40% of their strength before later recovering.
Another thing with warmups, is when you shoot from the same spot over and over, good shooters lock into a rhythm from that specific spot and the muscle memory knows the depth needed to not front/back rim it. Even if you shoot 100 shots from a spot, or rotate around the arc, as fatigue sets in, it’s easy for your mind and muscle memory to recalibrate to put more strength into the shot to not front rim it.
When you get tired in game, there’s not multiple attempts for you to adjust before you’re expected to make that shot when you’re wide open.
I played in college at a D-II level. It was a competitive conference and the skill level was very high, but we were either too short or not athletic enough to play D-I.
I say this because there was a premium put into shooting and half the team could make around 70-80% in warmups. A bad NBA shooter like Ausar Thompson still probably makes 50-60% over a larger sample like 100 shots. You can’t judge an NBA shooter based on a clip of 10 shots that you see online.
70% in warmups is a low end shooter usually, guys that will make 30-35% in game but only when wide open. Once you get to the elite shooters, they will make 90%+ easy.
It’s not a simple divide by 2 situation either. A guy like Max Strus, who used to play for my Cavs, is likely a 90%+ shooter when he shows up early for shots. But he is a 37% career 3pt shooter because he takes a very high degree of difficulty shots in game, because he’s a movement shooter and also will pull up from 30 ft sometimes.
There’s clips of Curry and Thompson making like 110+ in a row. Those guys can probably hit 95-98% consistently from a standstill.
Even guys like Ausar Thompson are 80%+ shooters in an open gym.
I’ve personally watched Jeff Teague, in retirement, hit probably 50 3s in a row and they barely touched rim.
NBA players are absolute freaks.
Andre Drummond turning into a legit 3pt shooter last season with Philly was pretty eye opening. Damn near league average on a good number of attempts, and almost 40% from the corner. Nutty
My buddies and I went to a TWolves game in ‘05 and got seats close to the floor. We got there early to watch the warmup before the game and I saw Fred Hoiberg go something like 99⁄100 from three, it was insane. Hoiberg was a cheat code in NBA 2k for Dreamcast.
Also, funny little thing that happened between Eddie Griffin (RIP) and Ndudi Ebi- They were standing behind the three point line at the wing and Griffin casually swished a three without jumping. And we were sitting close enough to hear Ebi tell Griffin something like, “I bet you can’t hit it again.” And Griffin just deadpan stared Ebi in the eyes, like his head fully looking to the right, and he swished another one. It was so sick.
I remember arriving early for a Cavs game in either ‘08 or ‘09 when they had Ben Wallace. I was already in college at that point so I was already aware of the rates that good shooters shot in warmups.
But Wallace was a 40% free throw shooter and he shot in the 20%s on shots outside 3 ft. So I wasn’t even expecting him to shoot 3s in warmups. But I’m watching him alone on the court shooting, and I can’t say he was much better than 50% overall, but I watched him hit 7 straight 3s at one point and it was eye opening at the time.
The thing that struck me, is when he would take jumpers in a game, which he did more than you think (roughly 15% of his shots came outside 10 ft), he always looked so uncomfortable. But in warmups, although I wouldn’t say he had a great or even good form, he looked much more confident and smooth.
It is an open gym and we just watched him brick it lmao
Tyrese Haliburton
I never understood this. Form-wise, his shot is great (just slow down his jumper from the other night); it’s just herky-jerky when he has time
Steph Curry.
An ugly shot that works is allowed.
An ugly shot that doesn’t work gets coaching.
Steph’s shooting mechanics are good if you slow it down, his release is just really quick.
Exactly. The first time I saw his release in slow motion it made so much more sense how he was so accurate, his form is so pure.
if you think Steph Curry has an ugly shot, i don’t think you know this game as well as you think
No. Steph has incredible form. It’s just not standard and very fast. But overall he has amazing footwork and shooting form
Yea bruh. Folks need to put this “do you know how a good a NBA player is” bullshit. Of course they’re good, but that height shit REALLY FUCKING MATTERS. I know a couple dudes 5’9-5’10 I promise had they been 6’7 they’d been in the league hands down
[deleted]
Is the coach Shawn Marion?
Maybe Joakim Noah
This!
Draymond?
Markelle Fultz thoracic outlet syndrome looking ass jumper.
Shit looks like a dry heave
LOL thats perfect. bro’s jumper is a cat coughing up a hairball
Yikes
Tell me this AI
It’s a Suns thing, just saw Oso Ighodaro’s jumper looking funky
Oso has always had a wack jumper
Lately we seem to be drafting high upside players with huge fatal flaws, and cross our fingers that it gets figured out. Probably the only thing we can do considering we aren’t going to have a lottery pick for a decade.
Both are terrible shooters. Need to start reworking them somewhere and both can be productive ball players in their roles in the meantime
He clearly doesn’t know how to use the power from his legs and they’re trying to get him to feel it. Not sure if anyone’s ever had to change their form on anything before, but you look like an idiot when you do it.
Ya I’m a homer I’ll always support my guys, no matter how delusional I sound. Go Suns.
I have better touch with my left hand, but I’ve never figured out how to use my legs to power my lefty shot. The timing isn’t there at all and going into a shot like that is going to result in some bullshit looking thing like this haha.
I never seen any trainer that change the better form/not broken into more ugly and weird form. Tf. This is bad. Whoever the trainer is fired them.
Michael Kidd Gilchrist rebuilt his jumpshot for a very short period of time before tearing his labrum. It was a glorious couple weeks!
MKG’s form also got more broken after Mark Price was hired to fix it. Not that it was ever great before that but there’s a pretty stark difference between how he shot the ball at Kentucky vs his 2nd-3rd year in the league.
This is the first thing I thought of when I saw the Peat video. I don’t understand how this happens.
I’ve seen trainers get excellent results. Must be a case by case thing. It’s NOT* like his jumper was good before.
Kawhi is the poster child. So-so form and not a great shooter coming in and the SAS staff rebuilt his form into something that works great for him, albeit still not super traditional.
Lonzo too
His jumper was not good before. Had like an all time horrible combine performance on jump shots, which is likely why he’s messing with his form.
Yeah I meant that. Must’ve forgot to type not. Moving too fast. Not makes sense in the context of the rest of my comment
Mikal Bridges bounced back, his was looking ugly for a season and a bit.
Markelle Fultz
Tbf sometimes they coach an in-between step to go from a bad form to good one if the change is too rapid. It is preseason, if he’s looking like this when games start? Yeah nuke the guy then.
Just hucking it up there huh
That guy is in the nba?
That looks like what happened to Desmond Masons shot.
It wasn’t pretty at AZ, but whoever did this mess has made it 10x worse
Who’s 14? The jumper looks beautiful
Kobe Brea, he has a beautiful shot but unfortunately he looks really bad against NBA talent
Nahhh what the fuck is this… in the big 26?!
He makes Ben Simmons look like Steph
That’s gotta be one of the slowest windup and releases I’ve ever seen
Hard to judge the coaching staff based on one short clip. But if I changed a players shooting form just before the season starts I probably wouldnt even let them any shots beyond their range until they are comfortable. These just look like bad reps upon bad reps. Maybe he was tired and this is way after practice or something. And to be fair, he wasnt a good shooter anyways so maybe they dont think theres any harm.
I don’t know shit about what steps are taken to fix someone’s shooting form, and I’d hazard a guess that the same is true for most of the other people commenting here but acting like they know what they’re talking about. Peat was a godawful shooter before, so it’s not like they can break him.
Ben Simmons’ brother
I could help him fr
All you have to do is keep your hand at his chest level during his windup and you get an instant block
It’s got a hitch as bad as Chuck’s infamous golf swing
If I took a jumpshot with my off hand, this is what it might look like. Clunky af
He taking advice from Tristan Thompson?
With the amount of time it takes for him to set the shot up, I don’t think he should shoot it at all. That shit is going to get blocked every time against anyone playing 50% defense.
Reminds me a bit of Shawn Marion or Joakim Noah
Is that Brea?
Beware the tale of Zeke Nnaji!!!
well that’s not the result. it’s still in progress
WHAT IS THAT SHIT
Quick let him watch Kevin Martin videos
He looks like I did the first week of playing 2k23.
I dont like shitting on young guys during the draft, but the Celtics were mocked to take Peat quite a bit and I was so against it.
He didn’t have a jumper in college, he is a solid athelete by college standards and took advantage of it against college level competition, being stronger than most wings and faster than most bigs. The issue is hes going to start running into guys like Andrew Wiggins, Harrison Barnes, Scottie Barnes, Jaden McDaniels, etc, these are big wings who he cant take advantage of like he did in college.
He needs a 3 pointer to open up the rest of his game and be viable, this is an awful step in the direction.
Looks like Andre Jackson Jrs shot, terrible. It is so slow too.
Wtf release is that?
I give it 18 months before he retires and starts doing Gods work.
This is an NBA team?
This is why you never let kids shoot outside their range in organized youth basketball. It just promotes bad form and bad muscle memory which, as we see here, is a pain in the ass to correct.
To be fair his form has been ass
The Shawn Marion special
Which player is Peat?
I thought he was #14 at first and was like what that shot looks normal and then #18 shot it LMAO
I legit don’t understand this. Did he not have a shot in college? And does he not have a mountain of footage to go through and study past players’ shot form?
Joakim Noah is now a shooting coach?
How do these people have jobs? How much are they paid to teach that?
WIP, that’s in transition
Oh you need to NSFW that
