From Across the Pond: Aris’ tipoff ritual for their first European game of the season in the Eurocup
Game’s start was delayed by about 15 minutes (everyone was aware it would take place, so cleanup was relatively easy)
Nba europe would never be this entertaining
Speak for yourself, I can’t wait to see this replaced with a mildly enthusiastic “everybody clap your hands! clapclapclapclapclap”
Don’t forget singing the American national anthem before the huge clash between the London Starbucks and the Paris Burger Kings
If yall wanna bitch about nba Europe then why don’t yall take this conversation over to r/eurobasket. This is r/nba brather
r/nba is basically r/basketball considering it’s the largest basketball subreddit. r/nfl has that place for football, but the other sports are under the same of the sport even though r/hockey is largely NHL discussion and r/baseball is largely MLB discussion.
As for r/soccer, there’s too many big teams and big leagues to talk about, such that it’s effectively become the central discussion for professional soccer (and politics within the game) in general.
[deleted]
So the Start was probably still closer to the announced starting time than any nba game ever
21 seconds in you see the reason for this and every other basketball frenzy in Greece. The spiritual father of the Greek players Kobe used to study, the spiritual grandfather of Giannis and the modern generation. The undisputed European GOAT. Nick Galis.
Greece’s Bill Russell or Wilt Chamberlain, in terms of impact to the sport.
He singlehandedly made Greece a basketball nation.
Legend.
Good enough for Red Auerbach to say cutting him was “his biggest mistake”
This is the team Thanasis play for. He finally found fans cheering more than him
Honestly incredible atmosphere and love from the fans. For sure feels missing in the nba. I know culturally very different but still.
For sure feels missing in the nba
Lol, no it doesn’t. As someone who grew up in greece, you don’t want this kind of atmosphere, it comes with extreme fanaticism and hooliganism, especially in Balkan shitholes like Greece. There have been numerous stabbing incidents and even murders because someone was just rooting for the other team. A couple of years ago just outside a volleyball stadium a police officer was hit with a homemade rocket launcher from the violent mob, had his leg amputated and eventually died.
I’d rather have the nba version where fans of different teams can sit side by side drinking beer than our version.
As a Central European I agree. Ice hockey has a good mix of atmosphere and family friendliness. Thinking about it … maybe that’s also the case in the NHL? A bit more intense in the arena than say the NBA, but still nice. Someone from US/CA chime in please.
As a European football fan, it’s bullshit. Violence happens, but it’s very rare. The circlejerk retort would be that you’re more likely to get shot in an American parking lot on the way to the game, than to get injured at one of these events. Of course the reality is that both are extremely unlikely to happen.
Mate, you are from Finland, you haven’t really witnessed what i am talking about. Come here in the south in greece or Serbia for example to see for yourself. As I said, numerous beating, stabbings and all kinds of violent incidents. Unless something really major happens, it won’t be covered in media abroad.
However, non-major incidents happen pretty much all the time. Non-major meaning beating someone almost unconscious.
Organized club members are just low-life hooligans that would beat a random stranger simply because he is wearing the shirt of a rival team.
Theres also less fans and they are way closer to the court. Gives it a more intimate feel. Idk if thats the right word.
I do love the vibes of this arena it reminds me of the hammerstein ballroom
I mean the atmosphere in the football games are also stellar, and those usually go above 20k seats for most major leagues in Europe.
Just a bunch of dudes lmao. Wheres the families? great atmosphere my ass
Do you think 12yo kids are necessary to producing a great atmosphere?
Regardless, of course there are families with kids in the stands (there’s women in the crazy jumping up and down crowd as well!), like you can pause at any moment of the video where the stands are being shown and see families, couples, etc.
Lots of kids go to games with their parents in Europe with this sort of atmosphere. Usually, in all cases that I know of at least, there is a “family” section. Kids love this stuff as well, and they’re not necessarily confined to the family section either.
The Euros’ passion for their sport is immense and lots of games are a spectacle to behold. Although I don’t really see anything wrong with how Americans enjoy their sports imo.
At least this would give the NBA a reason for late start times 👍
the american mind can’t comprehend actual atmospheres at sport games instead of it being a hour long billboard essentially
Everybody clap your hands 👏👏👏
DE-FEN-CE 👏👏

college sports are right there
Yes, but that doesn’t fit their narrative or get them precious karma.
America bad, Europe good
validation pls
College sports are going out of their way to ensure they kill that atmosphere off within the next decade or two.
Don’t worry college sports have maybe 5 years before that magic is completely gone
i think a lot of it actually left after the covid seasons. I’ve noticed in particular, atmospheres that were considered crazy are much more tame. my theory is being a crazy fan and all the fan traditions are passed down from upperclassmen to freshmen/sophomores, but the ~2 year gap broke that
Maybe college basketball. College football live is a constant speaker blaring with some Jumbotron games/replays brought you by High Noon.
Yes, for some programs that is true. However, their point does still stand as far as professional sports go, it is sad how diluted and “entertainment” oriented pro games are in the US now. Playoff hockey excluded.
Playoff Hockey Excluded
Even that pales in comparison to hockey in Europe, especially in Central Europe (Sweden, Germany, Switzelrand, Czechia for example)
still doesn’t compare to european atmospheres
Either you’ve never been to a college football game in the South or you’ve never been to Europe…
I looked up some college football atmosphere highlights because I was curious, and it was definitely better than in most pro sports in America.
That being said, what I saw was still mostly people singing along with music that was played over the loudspeakers. That made the atmosphere still feel way more manufactured than in many European sports leagues where it’s basically all by the fans, for the fans.
Have been to both. Europe blows college sports out of the water. Suggesting college sports atmosphere is anywhere near the level of Europe is pure copium.
you’re simply wrong
Not enough racist chants or neo-nazi fan groups for your liking?
Americans lowkey are so glad that some Euro fans are racist idiots. its their only argument and saving grace lmao
How damn brain broken are you guys to think that’s a thing in European sports? You hear about it because of how uncommon it is lol
scared of being abducted by your pedophiles president ICE forces when trying to create real atmosphere in a stadium?
Europeans love bragging about their atmosphere till you ask them what their ultras chant and why opposing fans can’t enjoy a game safe
Atmosphere is when you bring road flares into crowds, chant obscenities and threaten your rival team’s fans with mov violence
EVERYBODYCLAPYOURHANDS
CLAPCLAPCLAPCLAPCLAPCLAPCLAP
Americans love acting like all European sports are like that, when the reason why you know about those cases is specifically because they aren’t common. 99% of teams and games are great without having racism, violence or whatever you’re imagining
Swedish top league hockey games have better atmosphere than NBA games lol.
Sorry we don’t live in a sanitized world. The bad shit comes with the authenticity, it’s nowhere near as bad as you think and measures are taken to avoid violence like heavy police presence and banning people for life when excessive things occur
The opposing fans are perfectly safe. Don’t get me wrong, Ultras culture is the weirdest thing ever to me, but they keep the fighting within their groups. As long as you are wearing official club fan merch you are identified as a “normal fan”. Ultras have their own merch, and you do NOT want to get caught alone in that in a rival clubs city, because it will be taken from you as a trophy. But there’s also no way to get that without knowing what you are doing.
The different ultra groups will arrange a time and place to meet to beat the shit out of each other, but even that is weirdly respectful for lack of a better word. There’s a bunch of unwritten rules about what is and isn’t acceptable, and the “losers” leave bruised but safely.
I still don’t get it, it seems like such a stupid thing to be into, but it’s also not what you are making it out to be.
IDK where u r from but in my country u arent safe. This is from literally 12 hours ago. You can use whatever translation tool.
I’m from Germany and I know a few hardcore fans that are at least very close to the Ultra scene. I guess the differences are large from one region to the next
Someone above said ‘rubbish atmosphere, where’s the families?’ and it made me realise they’re just never going to get it are they 🤣
Maybe through NBA Europe(if it gets created) if they’ll come here to play and get it described from their players playing and if some of their fans come to watch it and afterwards discuss it with the fans locally.
You don’t understand American sports as well as you think you do. Our college sports are where the “actual atmospheres” really live.
I managed to go to a Michigan State game when I was in Michigan (only time I ever was in the US) and the atmosphere was ridiculous, I’ll have to agree with you here
They’re working hard to get rid of that and make it a fully commercialized product!
Are those games filled with violence and racism, or do you guys think that’s only a requirement in Europe?
I live in Canada for the past 20 years. Last year my brother came to visit and we went to a Raptors game. A couple right next to us stand up and left in the middle of the first quarter and did not get back until the fourth quarter. The seats were about 150 canadian dollars each. Why?
This looks like a regular 2000’s Big East game minus the confetti
kinda prefer a quieter atmosphere over having thousands of fans making monkey chants
It’s gotten so expensive to go to a sporting event that the people in NBA/NFL crowds for major games are just full of rich people who don’t actually care about the game.
Did you see the seahawks stadium last playoffs? The vibe in NYC during the last finals? Any CFB game? Honestly tf r u talking abt?
DE-FENCE👏👏
[insert thats bait gif]
LET’S GO insert team name here
Well, most Americans have a life and personality outside of sports, which makes this stuff pretty ridiculous
Bros never been to New England and it shows.
lmao, no you clearly never been to a european basketball or football game man if you think burgers can keep up with that
Do you ever use your brain? Or is it all just regurgitated slop you parrot from somewhere else? Who tf doesn’t like a good burger? I have no clue what country you are from, but you’ve clearly never been to TD Garden. Just spouting nonsense… European basketball doesn’t hold a candle to what we do over here. You guy’s Soccer is fun to go to, you bring a legendary vibe to the stadiums. Just so baseless it’s funny.
Lmfao TD Garden is a fucking library lmfao. All NBA stadiums are tbh, American professional sports culture is mostly a joke.
TD Garden? There’s more energy at a Pawsox game.
lmao yeah TD garden the epitome of atmosphere in sports
Lol so true. I was in New York one year ago and went to the MSG for a Knicks game. This was my first NBA game live and I was waiting for it for so long as big NBA fan.. after attending in Euroleague games and European football games it felt like a concert. It was so quiet i could bring my baby. The entire production focused on engaging the crowd with stupid 5 year old games (I am watching NBA for over 25 years so this was no surprise for me but see this live and how the crowd reacts was new experience) it started to look bizarre. You Americans are funny 😄 BTW, if you wonder, Europeans players 100% not intimidate by the atmosphere even if this is game 7 in the playoffs. Trust me on this because it get better very wild in europe
Facts this is awesome, let’s delay the game by 2 hours!!!!
Europeans are so fucking annoying.
“Look how much better we are than Americans at everything. If you do anything different from us that just means you’re doing it the wrong way “
Okay, how do we change it
Do things like light flares in the middle of a crowd and use slurs.
You forgot having neo-nazi fan groups and putting fences around the visitor fan sections so they don’t get stabbed during the game.
Also shooting at the opposing team’s bus while they leave the stadium after the match.
It’s ok, Murica has neo-nazi fan group running the country.
My name is kiddddddddd!!!!
See this is what Jokic was talking about when saying the pressure in Europe is different
Hard to put myself in thier shoes, but I couldn’t really take criticism seriously from people who act like that.
Btw, for context to Americans, Aris currently is like what, only the 4th biggest team in Greek basketball? Like the Euro cup is bellow the Euroleague, a second tier competition and Greece as a whole only has like 10M inhabitants yet they still drum up so much love and hype.
You understand that America has high school teams that would fill up that 5k stadium twice over?
Hell, our college basketball teams draw 10-20k on an average night and they are technically our sub-league teams.
5-9k capacity is for our smaller universities and Duke.
Kentucky’s arena 20k - population 320k
Indiana’s arena 17k - population 80k
Kansas’ arena 16k - population 95k
Arkansas’ arena 19k - population 100k
Illinois’ arena 16k - population 88k
And our college football stadiums top 100k for schools in small metros consistently
Ohio state’s stadium capacity 100k - population 900k
Penn state’s stadium capacity 108k - population 40k
Michigan stadium capacity 107k - population 122k
LSU stadium capacity 102k - population 227k
Texas A&M stadium capacity 102k - population 120k
Tennessee stadium capacity 102k - population 190k
That’s cool, I wish we had your guys’ college athletic culture. Are there multiple of these stadiums in each state or is there like one big state team for every state ?
In Texas every high school has a stadium😂
AND? That wealth and displaying it thus makes you superior? To the contrary I’d say it makes you an arrogant, smaller person.
There are multiple. Take Illinois, a state of 13 million people, and their division 1 programs:
State Farm Center (Illinois) 15,544
Carver Arena (Bradley) ~11,000
Wintrust Arena (DePaul) 10,387
CEFCU Arena (Illinois State) ~10,200
NIU Convocation Center (Northern Illinois) ~10,000
Credit Union 1 Arena (UIC) ~9,500
Banterra Center (Southern Illinois) 8,284
Welsh-Ryan Arena (Northwestern) ~7,000
Jones Convocation Center (Chicago State) ~7,000
Western Hall (Western Illinois) ~5,100
Gentile Arena (Loyola Chicago) ~4,500
Lantz Arena (Eastern Illinois) ~4,000
Vadalabene Center (SIU Edwardsville) ~4,000
Are these the biggest stadiums in the state though or just the college ones ?
McKale hosts 14k
Only the top-tier programs with smaller arenas (like Duke) come close to this atmosphere though. As far as professional sports go, this experience is much better than most NBA arenas. The closest you get here in the States is playoff basketball in places like OKC or Indiana, or playoff Hockey.
5000-8000 thousand with a bowl and everyone right on top of the court is about the best atmosphere for basketball that you can get.
And non of those games have fans that are this passionate.
I mean that looks super fun, but you can’t say college fans are not passionate.
Sure, bud.
I bet Americans can’t throw toilet paper rolls onto a court. 🤣
I have never in my life seen a coordinated chant the way European sports do it. They can’t even get it in soccer. There is no comparison, 5k Greek fans could outchant 20K American ones.
You left out Tennessee’s basketball arena, over 21,000.
Well Thessaloniki is 1m population. The stadium is 1960’s built. Last year it was 5k seats. This year 6200 seats. We’re looking to upgrade it or build another to 10k seats. What you don’t get is that it was like that at 5k(lower volume, less confetti and paperrolls in analogy) as now. And if we get it to 10k it will be each and everyone like that again(even more volume, even more confetti and paper rolls). And if one day we could get 20k it will be like that too. Cause maybe you invented it, but we love basketball(and winning ofc) more than any of you(It’s number one in our hearts and I strictly talk about Aris B.C. fans).
Don’t describe me you arenas and open Football arenas(comparing it with a basketball court? Really?). With 330+ million ofc you will have those and the money to support them. Don’t show me stats. Who care’s about stats? That team is our pride. Don’t brush off in front of me your money. Brush off in front of me your passion, your atmosphere and make it genuine, not a copycat. For us our breaths, our very own blood “runs yellow black”. Can you say that for your team?
You have zero idea about how arena expansion works.
Your atmosphere isn’t anything impressive and it’s lost on you because you don’t understand the scale. It would be impressive to me if I hadn’t seen that exact thing times 10. I get it.
That last paragraph is pure little brother energy. I think I get where the term wanker comes from now.
Your stadium looks like a high school sporting event. It’s an average Tuesday at a low end stadium in America.
You’ve obviously never met a real college sports fanatic that will beat your ass for misquoting the teams record 12 seasons ago. You want passion? A man killed a tree because it was historic to the rival team and went to jail for three years - cars have been lit on fire. You simply can’t compare yourself and your teams to US teams and their fans. The only crazier fans are soccer (football) fans.
You’re so mad that we aren’t glazing you just because you threw some trash on the court and then broke out into a repetitive chant. Our college sports have atmospheres that are passionate without drugged-up hooligan gangs chanting racial slurs and trying to fight/kill each other.
ARIS is not the 4th biggest team , its third in trophies but in atmosphere in this court has no competition !!! You have to be the there to experience it live , videos are good but the whole game in this court is …. I just cannot explain it in words . Google it you will find many videos of ARIS bc or Super 3 .
I don’t understand why these comments always have a “stupid Americans don’t understand how much Europeans love their teams” undertone.
I’ve seen D2 football teams with just as elaborate ceremonies. Hell, there’s High Schools that do similar stuff.
People in America would be way more inclined to tune into Euroleague basketball if the current fan base wasn’t so snobbish lmao.
It’s basically every online discussion about sports. Endless Euroglazing, especially on sites like reddit where it is very popular to hate everything American.
Go to any rugby video/subreddit online and you will see rugby fans trashing football/American culture. Meanwhile American football fans almost never think about rugby, and when we do, we simply say its a tough sport worthy of respect and move on. It’s a massive one-sided beef.
Nobody said “stupid”. It is a word you yourself used cause you have an inferiority complex with many of you trying to overcompensate with an arrogant display of wealth. You do know there are rich people in other countries out there, yes? And so many poorer that don’t even have to eat, which you most often fail to refer to.
I tell you this though. Alot of people would like you alot better if you didn’t do this, laughing in our faces, wanted to be superior to others like you’re a modern Aryan race(what are you? you’re to a great extend, immigrants from Europeans, you’re mostly Europeans yourselves, hello!)
A guy posts something, cause he wants to feel proud, to feel happy and what do you do? I see so many answers like “what are you trying to do trash? Admit that your inferior and kiss our feet before we come and whip you 100 times for punishment”.
You list cities and stadiums and money and how you can do stuff with money etc. Without GPS many of you can’t find most of it in a map. Some of you can’t estimate shopping change if a credit card is not used. You’re in depression and have to threaten with taxes and tarifs other nations cause you are the most in debt country in the world and have to close government offices every year to agree to have an even bigger debt. Enjoy that artificial wealth as long as it lasts till the bubble bursts and take the rest of the world with you, cause the only reason you’re allowed to have this gigantic debt is that you lead the world before it became known as a problem.
No, you are not stupid. You call Belgian Frittes French Fries/Freedom Fries and Greek/Roman eggbread French Toast. Your very symbol associated with the country, the Statue of Liberty IS in fact a French Gift, but you naver called it this way. Seems to me you love the French, but you’re too easy to hate them as long as others when they don’t succumb to your boot and your Imprerial decree. Well newsflash, LIBERTY and difference of opinion, is not an American-only privilege.
Like you often hate the world(like the French 25 years ago) you think the world hates you, but it is in fact a self-fullfiling prophecy. There is a reason why this is escalating. A good lot of you(like those who try to demean this post because I can only assume it tries to “dethrone you”(?lol) in some way) you’ve lost touch with Christianity, compassion and the World at large. Oh, you’re not stupid allright, you’re in fact, loathable.
Mate my intent wasn’t to snob people, it was to give context that Greece population wise is 32x smaller than yours, that this is a 4th team in a domestic league that literally no one cares about even here outside of Olympiakos and Panathinaikos fans
Nah by far the craziest things you read in threads like these are people who think European sports games are neonazi gatherings where the fans murder each other in the stands. Brother, what fucking games have you been to?
No they wouldn’t, that’s something you just made up
Nobody cares whether you tune in or not.
Perhaps it is at least a bit related to this plastic NBA Euro league proposal that the NBA is trying to force through.
Also…that last bit seems not true. I don’t care if the fanbase is snobby if it’s a good product that’s easy to watch. I watch Warrior and Laker games when they play the Spurs and they’re snobbier than Euros lol
No they wouldn’t. Americans are the most ignorant people there are.
Aris is the 3rd biggest team. Have a look at the history and titles. Not even close
Just think of it in tiers. Tier one: PAO, OLY & Tier two: PAOK, ARIS, AEK
C U R R E N T L Y malaka, can’t you read ?
Nobody gives a shit regardless
I’m highlighting the word currently here
which team is the 3rd?
Looks like PAOK
Yeah but now that I think about it, AEK could also to be argued to be above them, since they are better domestically but idk, i’m more of a soccer guy, maybe another greek who actually follows domestic and european basketball could chime in
Aris is the third biggest team in Greek basketball in every way, titles, fan attendance, legacy
PAOK finished above AEK in the league last year. Both teams played in a European final (PAOK for the second time in a row).
Paok
Hey, now the thunder fans stand until the first bucket is made, so same thing basically
Man their fans are so much better than ours
Looks like a lot to clean up.
Nah that’s an easy one, 15 minutes and nothing can’t be seen anymore, they knew it’s gonna happen, it’s a tradition and they gonna recycle it.
They’re gonna recycle/use it later. Clueless
How do you know?
Lol, it’s greece
More littering, yey
It’s literally inside and planned. Are we serious?
such a loser lol
Yeah, youre right fuck the environment.
Everything is recycled you dunce
Aris fans are so intense. This video always gave me chills and also the creeps. Imagine being an opposing player in that environment.
https://youtu.be/zy1K5yNT6wc?si=zC6ukC4AiQ807KEd
Yes we love the team THAT much!!!
Aris’ fans have been doing this hilarious shit for a while.

There is also a very old one I can’t find atm, like from the 1990s.
I attended an Aris game a couple of years ago. Insane atmosphere, you could feel the passion in the air. It’s great to see the team doing much better now!
This alone completely shits on any live sport atmosphere in the US
I don’t know, college football can get pretty crazy.
https://youtu.be/YC8LLYMp4M4?is=DVCcWP2WRfNy6GdT
Apparently Americans just don’t have a passion for sports.
Edit: It happens in basketball too
But they didn’t throw any paper all over the ground!
What is crazy about it?
OP: posts a really cool sports environment outside the US
Redditor, every single time: this is by far the greatest thing that has ever existed in the history of mankind and also the US sucks and the US could never
US living rent free in every Europeans head. We don’t even care and they comparing. Looks like a high school basketball game honestly.
You mean your mind isn’t blown by people throwing trash on the court and then breaking into yet-another repetitive chant that sounds almost identical to every other repetitive chant that they do in Europe?!
I mean are you surprised? I love the NBA but the fans suck ass lol.
You’ve never been to a college football or basketball game that’s for certain
So many americans butthurt in this thread lmao
Interesting (probably only to me) that digital video compression still struggles quite obviously with this kind of thing.

I ain’t ever heard of no Signapore

The NBA ain’t ready
Total sausage fest.
In Europe, no music no nothing. It’s not an entertainment show. It’s about sport and fandom!
The fans create the music
Our sports culture here in the states is just atrocious. The closest thing I’ve ever seen to this was people tossing free programs into the air while doing the wave during a low scoring NFL preseason game.
As I said in a different comment ( I am Greek ), I’d rather have your culture than this violent breeding culture
they threw ribbons and confetti. not impressed. all that and they would still get stomped out by the kings or nets
Yall romanticize people giving a shit and being like “the American mind can’t comprehend..” no motherfuckers tickets to the lower bowl are $450+ - your average fan can’t afford this shit. Besides that we can’t bring things into the stadium/arena because of guns and mass shooters.
Capitalism, Fear, Bigotry and Hatred have defeated America - and it’s not just an American problem it’s a global problem, but yeah let’s pretend Americans just care about their teams less than Europeans.
“we can’t bring things into the stadium/arena because of guns and mass shooters.”
Buddy, that’s very much an American problem and in no way global. Lol, lmao even.
I wasn’t trying to say guns is a global issue - the guns is an American issue, bad formatting on my part, I’m saying the fall of America is becoming a global problem unfortunately.
In Turkey fans shoot at the opposing team’s bus after matches.
There’s no NBA in this post. Delete it
Thanasis Antetokounmpo is on the floor, it counts
The US could never and would never.
This is a step up from their usual behavior of attacking opposing fans
DEFENSE clapclapclap DEFENSE

Yeah
