[Windhorst] NBA Europe is going to happen and will focus on European talent development, setting limits on USA players. The NBA is going to Europe for 20 years or more, investing in it like they did in the WNBA: they don’t care if it doesn’t do great in the first years, they’re going to invest in it
Amid the NBA’s recent proposal to work with the EuroLeague on a potential collaboration, new details on the NBA Europe project have been revealed.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst answered questions in the Philippines during a live recording of his podcast, Brian Windhorst and The Hoop Collective and he named details of how the NBA is trying to get investors interested in NBA Europe.
“The NBA is expanding to Europe. It’s going to happen. I promise you. And part of the way that they’re going to get everybody to buy in there is that they are going to guarantee investment in European players,” he said.
Windhorst emphasized that there will be a focus on European players in the NBA Europe project with limits to how many Americans can be part of a particular team.
“This is going to be part of their sales pitch when they get it done. They’re gonna limit how many American players can be on there, they’re going to expand the rosters, because they’re gonna be playing in two different leagues, the national league and the NBA Europe,” he said.
“They’re going to say ‘the reason you should care about our new teams in London, and in Rome, and elsewhere and the existing teams is we’re going to develop European players.’”
Windhorst also mentioned that the NBA is investing longterm and doesn’t care if the results are poor in the beginning.
“They are going to Europe for 20 years or more. They’re investing in it like they did in the WNBA, they don’t care if it doesn’t do great or somebody kicks rocks on it in the first year, they’re going to invest in it.”
